(03/061) Earthquakes in Antep and Maraş…

According to the information recorded by Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, on February 6, 2023, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 in Şehitkamil district of Antep which struck at 04:17 local time and an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 in Ekinözü district of Maraş which struck at 13:24 local time killed at least 46,104 people as of March 6, 2023.

The Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change announced on March 5, 2023 that the number of collapsed, to be urgently demolished and severely damaged buildings in the earthquake zone was 227.027.

The Minister of Family and Social Services made a statement on March 6, 2023 and declared that a total of 1,915 unaccompanied children were registered in the system, 1,602 of them were identified and given to their families, 216 children were in the hospital, 97 children were in the institutions of the ministry, and 79 children could not be identified.

(03/062) Human Rights Defender on Trial in Ankara…

The trial of the case against the Human Rights Association (HRA) Ankara branch former executive Aslı Saraç, for the events she participated in and social media posts, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 28 on March 6, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Aslı Saraç on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. Aslı Saraç attended the trial and made defence. The court decided to send the case to the prosecutor for legal opinion and adjourned the trial to June 15, 2023.

It is learned that the news reports about the sale of relief materials sent to earthquake survivors published on https://www.birgun.net/, https://www.evrensel.net, https://www.gazeteduvar.com.tr websites are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Mersin Penal Court of Peace No. 3 on March 6, 2023.

It is learned that the news report about the allegation of civilians wearing military uniforms in the earthquake region, published on https://www.sozcu.com.tr website is banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Ankara Penal Court of Peace No. 7 on March 6, 2023.

(03/064) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The retrial of the case against former football players Bekir İrtegün, Uğur Boral and Ömer Çatkıç, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 32 on March 6, 2023, as the verdict of the local court was overturned. The court sentenced 3 defendants to 1 year 6 months and 22 days on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and deferred the announcement of the verdict.
