(06/065) Male Violence Monitoring Report…
According to the ‘Male Violence Monitoring Report’ published by Bianet on June 6, 2024, at least 40 women and 5 children were killed by men across Turkey in May 2024. It is also stated in the report that men subjected at least 56 women to violence, harassed 4 women, abused 29 children, and forced 34 women to sex work. Accordingly, men killed 199 women in the first 5 months of 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 7, 2024, that the letter written by Ronahi Sırdaş, a prisoner in Kayseri Women’s Prison, to PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in İmralı F Type Prison was not sent by Prison Letter Reading Commission on the grounds of being ‘objectionable’, and that Ronahi Sırdaş appealed to Kayseri Execution Judgeship No 1 against the decision, and that the court found the appeal justified.
It is learned from the news coverage of June 7, 2024, that the letter written by Gülistan Yılmaz, a prisoner in Kayseri Women’s Prison, to Ömer Hayri Konar in İmralı F Type Prison, was found ‘objectionable’ and was not sent by Prison Letter Reading Committee.

It is learned that the appeal made on June 7, 2024, to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s family and tutelary along with the families and tutelary of Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 7, 2024, that the police prevented Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan, DEM Party Van MP Pervin Buldan, and Ağrı MP Sırrı Sakık from visiting shopkeepers in the Yüksekova district of Hakkari. It is also reported in the news that the police blockade was lifted after a while and visits were carried out.

The final hearing of the moral damages lawsuit filed against journalist Furkan Karabay by Istanbul Justice Commission Chair Bekir Altun due to ‘attacking personal rights’ was held on June 7, 2024, at Istanbul Anatolian Civil Court of First Instance No 27. The court ruled the journalist to pay 12,500 TL non-pecuniary damages.

The final hearing of the lawsuit filed against journalist Furkan Karabay due to the news article titled “Why did Muhammed Yakut threaten Erdoğan’s lawyer Mustafa Doğan İnal? An indictment was issued in the armed attack with FETÖ Exchange allegations” published on April 19, 2023, was held on June 6, 2024, at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2. The court sentenced the journalist to 1 year and 15 days of imprisonment for ‘slander’ and decided to postpone the sentence. The court also ruled that there is no ground for a verdict on the charge of ‘insult’ against the journalist.

The trial of the case against journalist Pınar Gayıp, Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) Co-Chair Şahin Tümüklü, and ESP PM member Hüseyin İldan continued on June 6, 2024, at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 26. The indictment demands a sentence for 3 people on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court released Hüseyin İldan and adjourned the trial to October 8, 2024.
Hüseyin İldan was detained on March 9, 2024 and arrested on March 12, 2024.

The first trial of the case against Nihat Türk, Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) district executive in the Buca district of Izmir, started on June 6, 2024, at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 18. The indictment demands a sentence for Nihat Türk on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court released Nihat Türk and adjourned the trial to November 7, 2024.
Nihat Türk was detained on October 6, 2023 and arrested on October 9, 2023.

On June 7, 2024, the first trial of the case against Halil Begit, for the armed attack on Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) district office in the Birecik district of Urfa on May 8, 2024, started at Birecik Penal Court of First Instance. The court released Halil Begit and adjourned the trial to September 18, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 6, 2024, that an investigation was initiated against Mümin Erol, co-mayor of the Tatvan district of Bitlis, on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ for taking down the photograph of the President in his office.
(06/075) Investigation Request Against Diyarbakır Bar Association…
It is learned from news coverage of June 6, 2024, that the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office Terrorism Crimes Investigation Bureau has filed a criminal complaint against the statement titled ‘We Must Defend Peace Under All Circumstances’ published on November 21, 2022, by 12 bar associations, including the Diyarbakır Bar Association, against the operations launched by the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) in 2022 against the borders of Northern and Eastern Syria and the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). It is learned that the Ministry of Justice rejected the request for an investigation against Nahit Eren, Ahmet Dağ, Aydın Özdemir, Cemile Turhallı Balsak, Gevriye Atlı, Mehdi Özdemir, Mehmet Işık, Serdar Özer, Servet Vural, Seyit Rıza Karakaş and Zuhal Sayılgan Işık on the charge of ‘denigrating the Turkish Nation, the State of the Republic of Turkey, the institutions and organs of the State’ under TCK 301.The case regarding the injury of lawyer Serkan Karakaş by car was previously filed at the Şırnak Penal Court of First Instance; the court ruled that the case should be sent to the heavy penal court.
