(07/058) Operations and Attacks…

The Ministry of National Defence announced that 3 soldiers (Muhammed Mustafa Koca, Ömer Ertuğrul Sarı, Murat Yıldırım) died in an attack during the Claw-Lock military operation in the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on July 7, 2022.

(07/059) Discriminatory Attack in Ankara…

On July 4, 2022, Assoc. Dr. Koray Başar, one of the former chairs of the Turkish Psychiatric Association, was attacked by 2 people in front of his house in Ankara. It is learned that the attackers threatened Koray Başar to end his studies and advocacy for LGBTI+s.

Koray Başar has been targeted by phobic and discriminatory circles on the grounds of his studies.

(07/060) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police used pepper spray and batons to intervene the health workers who were marching Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine to the Provincial Health Directorate on July 7, 2022 to protest the violence against health care workers, after the murder of Dr. Ekrem Karakaya was by a person named Hacı Mehmet Akçay in Konya City Hospital while on duty. It is learned that nobody was detained during the intervention. It is reported that the police prevented journalists from recording by using physical violence.

(07/061) Police Intervention to a Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Ankara on July 6, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(07/062) Police Violence and Threat to Journalists in Istanbul…

It is learned that the journalists who were recording the march of the health care workers on strike to protest the violence in health on July 7, 2022 in Istanbul, were subjected to physical and verbal violence by the police, and were also threatened. The footage of the police walking up to Artı TV reporter Meral Danyıldız, saying, “You’re going to be in trouble”, and threatening cameraman Bilal Meyveci, saying “You will see what happens if you did not record me stepping on your foot”.

(07/063) Detained Mayor and City Council Member in Izmir…

The Republican People’s Party ((CHP) Menderes district mayor Mustafa Kayalar and city council member E. G., who were detained on July 5, 2022, are released by the court on judicial control conditions on July 6, 2022.

(07/064) Detained Deputy Mayor, Party Executive and Other People in Adana…

37 people including Seyhan district deputy mayor Funda Buyruk, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Adana provincial co-chairs Helin Kaya and Mehmet Karakış, the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Çukurova co-spokespersons Şilan Turğa and Enver Güler were detained in operations covering 4 cities through an Adana based investigation on June 27, 2022. 4 of them (İlyas Arzu, Ayşe Irmak, Mehmet Saruhan and Murat Gürbüz) are arrested by the court on July 6, 2022; 33 people are released provided that 24 of them will be on judicial control conditions.

(07/065) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against journalist Can Ataklı, on the grounds of his expressions in a television programme, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 22 on July 6, 2022. The court sentenced Can Ataklı to 11 months and 7 days on the charge of “inciting hatred and hostility among people or degrading” and then converted the jail sentence to a penalty fine of 10,110 Turkish Liras.

(07/066) Police Officers on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 3 police officers for performing strip search on Mücella Yapıcı and Cansu Yapıcı, who were detained during Gezi Park protests in 2013, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 11 on July 6, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for defendant police officers at least 3 years up to 12 years on the charge of ‘torture’.

The court did not accept the request of Mücella Yapıcı who is kept in Bakırköy Women’s Prison, to attend the trial. It is reported that Yapıcı’s request to join the trial via sound and vision system was not accepted either. After witness police officers’ hearings, the court decided to send a writ to have Mücella Yapıcı join the next trial via sound and vision system and adjourned the trial to December 1, 2022.

(07/067) Suspended Mayors in Izmir and Aksaray…

The CHP Mayor of Menderes district of İzmir, Mustafa Kayalar, is suspended by the Ministry of Interior on July 7, 2022 on the grounds of an investigation against him.

The independent Mayor of Yenikent town of Aksaray, Mehmet Emin Yumuşak, is suspended by the Ministry of Interior on July 7, 2022 on the grounds of an investigation against him.

(07/068) The Decision of Lifting the Immunity of the Member of Parliament…

The Drafting Commission under the Justice Committee of the Grand National Assembly has ruled to lift the immunity of the DBP co-chair and Diyarbakır MP Saliha Aydeniz on July 6, 2022. It is learned that the report of the Drafting Commission will be sent to the Joint Commission afterwards.

(07/069) Administrative Fine for TV Channels…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 6, 2022 that the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK) issued Halk TV channel with a programme ban for three times on the grounds of “Dear Öcalan” expression of HDP MP Mehmet Tiryaki who was a guest of the programme.

It is learned that RTÜK also issued Halk TV an administration fine for broadcasting the statement of CHP chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu once again, which was the reason for another penalty fine of RTÜK for TELE1 TV channel.

(07/070) Broadcasting Ban on News…

It is learned that Konya Penal Court of Peace No. 5 issued a broadcast ban on the grounds of “protection of national security and public order” on the news about doctor Ekrem Karakaya’s death as a result of an armed attack at Konya City Hospital, on July 6, 2022.
