(07/071) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 6, 2020 that, in Ağrı Patnos L Type Prison, the water given to prisoners was not hygienic, despite of Covid-19 pandemic; and the packages sent to prisoners were not delivered.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 6, 2020 that, in Hatay Iskenderun T Type Prison, prisoners were forced to stand in military order during roll-calls; 6 prisoners were kept in a ward for 3, prisoners were not given hygiene supplies, and letters of prisoners were not sent.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 6, 2020 that Ahmet Aydın, a prisoner in Karaman Prison was kept in a solitary cell for 27 months.

(07/072) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the press declaration for lawyers Ebru Timtik and Aytaç Ünsal who are on death fast in prison; in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on July 6, 2020 and detained 1 person (Yıldırım Deniz).

(07/073) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declarations of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling 1336 days to regain their jobs, in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on July 6, 2020 at 13.30 and at 18.00 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

(07/074) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the protest in front of Çankaya Public Health Directorate on July 6, 2020, who rally to regain their jobs from which they had been dismissed by state of emergency decrees, and forced 1 person (Mahmut Konuk) away from the building by using physical violence.

(07/075) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Istanbul…

The police used pepper spray to intervene the press declaration in front of Esenler Cultural Center in Istanbul on July 6, 2020; organized by Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions (DISK) Tourism Workers’ Union and other organisations, to demand re-engagement of Taylan Öztürk who was dismissed from his job at Esenler Municipality. It is learned that 1 person (Taylan Öztürk) was injured due to police intervention.

(07/076) The Cases Against Academics Who Are the Signatories of the Petition “We will not be a party to this crime!”…

The trial of the case against HRFT President Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı and Professor Gençay Gürsoy for signing the petition “We will not be a party to this crime!” is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 37 on July 7, 2020. Professor Gençay Gürsoy was sentenced to 2 years and 3 months on December 12, 2018; Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months on December 19, 2018. Following Constitutional Court’s decision on August 26, 2019, which states that sentences given to academicians through these cases have violated freedom of expression; previous verdicts of local courts were reversed for retrial. The court acquitted Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı and Professor Gençay Gürsoy.

(07077) Detained Co-Mayor and City Council Members in Batman…

Batman co-mayor Songül Korkmaz, 7 members of Batman city council and HDP’s Batman co-chair Ömer Kulplu are not allowed in Batman Municipality building where they came for city council meeting on July 6, 2020. Songül Korkmaz has been suspended by Ministry of Interior and a trustee was appointed to Batman.

9 people wanted to enter into the Municipality building upon their demands for official reporting of prevention and of cancellation of city council meeting were rejected, and they were detained by the police.

Detained people were released on the same day. Detained 9 people were: Songül Korkmaz, Ömer Kulplu and city council members Şükran Çelebi, Gizem Oğurlu, İlkay Alagöz, Şehriban Aydın, Ayşe Önal, Recep Yargı, Şirin Şen. 

(07/078) Former HDP Co-Chair on Trial…

The trial of the case against HDP’s former co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş, on the grounds of insulting former Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and the President, in a speech he made, is held at Istanbul Bakırköy Penal Court of First Instance No 7 on July 6, 2020.

It is learned that Selahattin Demirtaş demanded to attend the trial in person. The court decided to send a writ to prison for Selahattin Demirtaş’s attendance to the next trial and adjourned the trial.

(07/079) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against Cem Şimşek, former executive editor of Evrensel newspaper, on the grounds of insulting the President in a news report “German cartoonists sketched Erdoğan badly”, is held at Bakırköy Penal Court of First Instance No 27 on July 6, 2020.

The court adjourned the trial to October 27, 2020.

(07/080) Criminal Complaint Against Journalists…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 6, 2020 that, Communications Director Republic of Turkey Fahrettin Altun filed criminal complaints against 3 news reports, “Illegal Construction on Bosporus” on April 14, 2020; “CHP: Fraud” on April 15, 2020; and “Our crime is to reveal the crime, and catch in the act” on April 29, 2020 on Cumhuriyet newspaper. It is learned that a lawsuit demanding 250.000 Turkish Liras for immaterial compensation is opened at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 30 against executive editor Olcay Büyüktaş, reporter Hazal Ocak and Yeni Gün News Agency and Publishing Corporation.

(07/081) Ban of Events in Van…

Van Governorate made a declaration on July 5, 2020 and announced that, all open and indoor events such as demonstrations, press declarations, meetings, sit-ins, opening stands and tents, festivals, concerts, delivering leaflets and so on are banned for 15 days as of July 7, 2020. All events are banned in Van for 1339 days since November 21, 2016.

(07/082) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On July 6, 2020, 115 former employees of Financial Crimes Investigation Board are detained; and 6 people are detained in operations covering 5 cities through a Konya based investigation.

(07/083) Covid-19 Pandemic…

Ministry of Health declared that 16 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 1,086 new Covid-19 cases were diagnosed on July 6, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 5,241 and total number of confirmed cases is 206,844 as of July 6, 2020.
