(02/058) Earthquakes in Antep and Maraş…

According to the information recorded by Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, on February 6, 2023, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 in Şehitkamil district of Antep which struck at 04:17 local time and an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 in Ekinözü district of Maraş which struck at 13:24 local time killed at least 3432 people and injured 21,103 people in Adana, Adıyaman, Antep, Diyarbakır, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Maraş, Osmaniye, Urfa provinces. It is reported that at least 5775 buildings had collapsed.

The Ministry of National defence announced that 3 soldiers (Hakan Al, Mert Can Sümbül, Eren Taşkın) died in Hatay in the earthquakes on February 6, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 7, 2023 that, the members of the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) who were in Hatay for rescue and relief activities for earthquake victims were prevented.

Evrensel newspaper reporter Volkan Pekal was detained on February 7, 2023, as he was reporting with the survivors of the earthquakes who were under treatment at Adana City Hospital. It is learned that Volkan Pekal was released after statement procedures on the same day.

(02/061) Prosecutions and Detentions for Social Media Posts…

The General Directorate of Security announced that prosecutions were initiated against 90 people and 4 people were detained for their social media posts about the earthquakes in Antep and Maraş, as of February 7, 2023.

(02/062) Detained People in Van…

It is learned that 10 people including the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) central executive board member Ökkeş Kaya who were detained in house raids in Van on February 3 and 4, 2023 were released by the court on judicial control conditions on February 6, 2023.

(02/063) Detained Journalist and HDP Executive and Other People in Izmir…

It is learned that 5 of 6 people (Jinnews reporter Nazlıcan Yıldız, the Peoples’ Democratic Party [HDP] Izmir provincial executive Murat Tufan, F. D., A. B. and B. T.) who were detained in house raids in Izmir on February 6, 2023 were arrested by the court on February 6 and 7, 2023. 1 person (M. B.) was released.

(02/064) Journalist on Trial in Antalya…

The final trial of the case against journalist Engin Korkmaz, on the grounds of ‘insulting the President on social media’ is held at Antalya Penal Court of First Instance No. 19 on February 6, 2023. The court acquitted Engin Korkmaz.

(02/065) People on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 13 people including 2 journalists for a protest held in front of Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison on May 10, 2019; is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 23 on February 7, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to May 8, 2023.
