(12/050) Male Violence Monitoring Report…

According to the “Male Violence Monitoring Report” published by Bianet on December 6, 2023, at least 35 women and 8 children were killed by men across Turkey in November 2023. It was also stated that men inflicted violence on at least 60 women, harassed 3 women, and abused 8 children.

(12/051) Labor Killings…

Worker Health and Worker Safety Assembly (ISIG) announced on December 6, 2023, that at least 137 workers, including 2 women, 2 children, and 7 migrants/refugees, lost their lives at work in November 2023. Accordingly, the number of people who lost their lives in labor killings in the first 11 months of 2023 is at least 1772.

(12/052) Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Batman…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 6, 2023, that 8 people (Mehmet Ali Teknal, Serhat Salman, Adnan Vural, Samet Aravin, Seyithan Çetel, Fatih Başaran, Eyüp Alphan, Mehmet Çiçek) who were detained with the use of physical violence while distributing leaflets in Batman on December 3, 2023, were subjected to torture and ill-treatment at Batman Provincial Security Directorate. It is learned that 8 people were injured in various parts of their bodies due to the torture and ill-treatment they were subjected to in detention.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 6, 2023, that İbrahim Baltacı, a prisoner in Adana E Type Prison, was subjected to torture and ill-treatment by correction officers and was injured in various parts of his body.

It has been reported that the appeal made on December 7, 2023, by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bursa, requesting a visit, has not received a response.

(12/055) Journalist Detained in Antep…

Journalist İrfan Uçar was detained on December 6, 2023, in the İslâhiye district of Antep. The reason for his detention could not be learned. İrfan Uçar was released by the court on the same day on judicial control conditions.

(12/056) Journalist Forcibly Taken to Testify in Istanbul…

On December 7, 2023, Gerçek Gündem editor Furkan Karabay was forcibly taken to the Çağlayan Courthouse to give his statement by the police, who came to his home in Istanbul and was released on judicial control condition.

(12/057) HEDEP Executive and Others Detained in Mersin…

On December 6, 2023, 5 people, including Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (HEDEP) Party Assembly (PM) member Ali Bilen, were detained in house raids in Mersin. The reason for detention is not known. The names of the detained people are Ali Bilen, Demet Gökalp, Abdullah Çapar, Cihan Beyhan and Medeni Tutmaz.

The first trial of the case against journalist Gözde Bedeloğlu for her article titled “Those who guard the state from past to present,” published in BirGün newspaper, started on December 6, 2023, at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 2. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘insulting a public official.’ The court adjourned the hearing to February 22, 2024.

(12/059) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The final hearing of the case against journalist Ahmet Altan for an article published in the Taraf newspaper in 2008 was held on December 6, 2023, at Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 2. The indictment demands Ahmet Altan be sentenced for ‘insulting a public official’. The court decided to dismiss the case on the grounds that the statute of limitations had expired.

(12/060) The Hrant Dink Case…

On December 6, 2023, the trial of the new case against 11 people, including Yasin Hayal, one of the instigators of the murder, former police chiefs Ramazan Akyürek, Ali Fuat Yılmazer and Ogün Samast, who was sentenced to 22 years and 10 months in prison for the murder of Hrant Dink and released on probation on November 15, 2023 “in consideration of good behavior”, continued at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 14. The indictment demands a sentence for the defendants on the charges of ‘attempting to overthrow the constitutional order,’ ‘being a member of an illegal organization,’ and ‘intentional killing’. It is learned that Ogün Samast left the courtroom without giving his statement. After defences, the court adjourned the trial to March 6, 2023.

(12/061) Police Officer on Trial in Şırnak…

The case against police officer S. E. for injuring lawyer Serkan Karakaş by hitting him with his car in Şırnak on April 10, 2022, was filed at Şırnak Criminal Court of First Instance and the court ruled that the case file should be sent to the Heavy Penal Court. The trial continued on December 6, 2023, at Şırnak Heavy Penal Court No 3. The indictment demands a sentence for the defendant police officer on the charge of ‘attempted intentional killing.’ The court decided to refer S. E. to the Forensic Medicine Institution for the third time to determine whether he has criminal capacity and adjourned the trial to March 20, 2024. Police officer S. E., who was arrested after the incident, was released on house arrest after the indictment was accepted.

(12/062) ‘No Grounds for Investigation’ Decision on Gendarmerie Intervention in Muğla…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 6, 2023, that the Milas Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office decided that there is ‘no ground for investigation’ on the criminal complaint about the gendarmerie intervention during the justice watch in Akbelen Forest in the Milas district of Muğla in July 2023.

(12/063) The Decision of Non-Prosecution about a Police Officer in Van…

It is learned from the news coverage of December 6, 2023, that Van Public Prosecutor’s Office decided not to prosecute the investigation against 2 police officers for torture and ill-treatment of a person with a mental disability named M. P. in Van on October 6, 2023, on the grounds that “proportionate force was used”.
