(08/049) Male Violence Monitoring Report…

According to the ‘Male Violence Monitoring Report’ published by Bianet on 6 August 2024, at least 25 women and 4 children were killed by men across Turkey in July 2024. It is also stated in the report that men inflicted violence on at least 61 women, harassed 10 women, abused 13 children, and forced 31 women to sex work.

Ministry of National Defence (MND) announced that 1 soldier (Habip Murat Alp) died in a clash between Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) units and HPG militants during the ‘’Pençe-Kilit‘’ operation in the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on 7 August 2024.

(08/051) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

According to the news coverage of 6 August 2024, the report of Human Rights Association (IHD) on the violations of rights detected during the prison visits in Çukurova region between January and July 2024, prisoners in Adana Kürkçüler Prison were rarely given cleaning supplies, prisoners had to buy cleaning products from the commissary by their own means, muddy and wormy water was flowing from the fountains and hot water was provided for only 1 hour a day, some opposition publications and Yeni Yaşam newspaper were not given to prisoners, The number of book quotas and the number of channels allowed on television were reduced by the prison administration, if prisoners mentioned the violations of rights they were subjected to in prison during their phone calls, the call was terminated even though the time had not expired, prisoners still cannot benefit from artistic and social activities that were cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic, some political prisoners were allowed to ventilate only for 1 hour a day and were not allowed to participate in social activities, prisoners in Kürkçüler and Osmaniye Prisons were transferred against their will and their families were not informed about the transfer.

It is learned from the news coverage of 7 August 2024 that, Tuba Sert, a prisoner in Antalya Manavgat S Type Prison was prevented by correction officers from taking group photos with her family during an open visit. One of Tuba Sert’s family members stated the following to the press: ‘They only allowed us to shake hands. At that time, 3 or 4 correction officers came to the interview area and told us: ‘One person should stay, 3 people should leave, one person will see you’. When we told them that they had authorised this situation, they replied, ‘You will never see Tuba together again for the rest of your lives, thank God’. After this statement, we requested to meet with the chief warden, the prison director and the prison prosecutor, but they did not let us meet them. We could only meet with Tuba for 5 minutes each. They did not let us take a photograph…’.

It is learned from the news coverage of 7 August 2024 that, prison administration initiated disciplinary proceedings against prisoners who danced halay to Kurdish music in Izmir Şakran Women’s Prison on 19 July 2024; and that Prison Disciplinary Board sentenced some prisoners to 1 month of deprivation of communication and means of communication, and 5 prisoners (Berna Çelik, Makbule Sünger, Esma Başkale, Figen Şahin and Medine Orhan) to 1 month of deprivation of visitation rights. It is not known how many prisoners were subjected to disciplinary proceedings.

It is learned from the news coverage of 7 August 2024 that, Muhammed İnal, a prisoner in Kocaeli Kandıra F Type Prison was transferred to Ankara Sincan High Security Prison against his will on 2 July 2024 and has been kept in a solitary room since then.

It is learned from the news coverage of 6 August 2024 that, prisoners in Adana Kürkçüler Prison campus were subjected to mouth search during hospital transfers and prisoners who reject this practice were not transferred to hospitals.

(08/053) Person Arrested in Osmaniye…

1 of the 5 people (Hivda Kahraman), including Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Osmaniye Central District Co-Chairs Sevgi Aydın and Faruk Kahraman, who were detained in house raids on August 6, 2024, was arrested by Osmaniye Criminal Peace Judgeship on the charge of “making propaganda for an illegal organization” on the grounds of waving a yellow, red and green tissue. It is also reported in the news that interrogations of 4 other people are still ongoing. The names of the people whose testimonies are still ongoing are Sevgi Aydın, Faruk Kahraman, Hakan Kahraman, Murat Kahraman.

(08/054) Person Who is Not Heard from Since His Release from Prison…

It is learned that Ali Veli (19, m), a Syrian citizen who was released from Erzincan L Type Prison on 13 March 2024 and whose family was threatened through video footage of him being subjected to torture, was released by Free Syrian Army (FSA) for a ransom of 9.800 USD.

Necma Mûsa, Ali Veli’s mother, stated the following to the press: ‘After keeping him here (Girê Spî) for 45 days, they put him in a one-metre cell alone and kept him there for 45-50 days. They constantly asked where his father was. They tortured him. They threatened to kill him, they put the Holy Quran in front of him and threatened him about whether he knew where his father was. When they couldn’t get anything out of him, they gave him to the Free Syrian Army gangs and kept him there for a while (…) We hired two lawyers there, one in Girê Spî and one in Serekanîye. A sheikh affiliated to the organization was looking after these matters (…) The sheikh decided to send my son to Serekanîye. After sending him there, intelligence intervened. Intelligence intervened to prevent him from being sent early and wanted to get something out of him. When it was said that he would be released, the soldiers did not allow it. Because intelligence is connected to Turkey. Then we contacted Aleppo, and when they received instructions from there, they released the child. They took 9 thousand 800 dollars from us to release him…’.

(08/055) Person Arrested in Kayseri…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 6, 2024, that 1 person named M. U., who has a finalized prison sentence for ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ in Kayseri, was arrested after being detained and sent to prison.
