(04/075) Prisoner Death in Prison…
It is learned that a prisoner named İsmail Aslan (66) in Bandırma Type T Prison No 1, lost his life on Spril 7, 2018 after he was sent to hospital following an illness. It is learned that Aslan was among the names IHD (Human Rights Association) listed as ‘‘seriously ill’’. It is learned that İsmail Aslan has been in prison since 1993 and released on condition in 2016 but was arrested once again before his treatment was finalized.
(04/076) Mother and Child Hit by Armored Vehicle in Silopi…
On April 7, 2018 a mother and her child S.K. (4) was hit by an armored vehicle in Şırnak’s Silopi district while they were crossing the street. It is learned that Nesrin Kılıç was slightly injured but her child S.K. was severely injured and his left foot has been amputated in surgery.
It is learned from news coverage of the incident that the vehicle quickly drove away from the scene and the family filed criminal complaints against the police officers within the vehicle.

It is learned that on April 6, 2018, 2 soldiers died and one soldier was injured during an attack by HPG militants towards a military base in Hakkari’s Çukurca district.
It is reported that on April 6, 2018, 2 rangers were wounded during clashes between HPG militants and security forces in Diyarbakır’s Kulp district.

It is learned from news coverage of April 6, 2018 that since April 26, 2017 DİHA reporter Nedim Türfent has been kept in a solitary confinement cell in Van high security prison. DİHA agency was closed by a decree with the force of law. Nedim Tüfent was arrested on May 13, 2016 and later sentenced to 8 years 9 months by Hakkari 2nd Heavy Penal Court.
It is learned from news coverage of April 8, 2018 that in Bayburt Type M Prison, all prisoners including children were forced to stand up in military fashion during counting’s. The news also revealed that the children within the prison were not given adequate food thus suffered from weight loss and 10 female prisoners were poisoned from the food provided by the administration.

It is learned from news coverage of April 8, 2018 that the prisoner named Turan Gürana who has been on a death fast since February 15, 2018 to protest PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s solitary confinement finished his protest.
(04/080) Rejection to Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan…
It is learned that the appeal made on April 6, 2018 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s sister and brother along with the families of Hamili Yıldırım, Ömer Hayri Konar and Veysel Aktaş’ın in order to visit, was rejected the same day on the grounds of limitations for prisoners in accordance with the Law on the Execution of Criminal and Security Measures Number 5275. With the last rejection, it was the 70th time that appeals for visiting Öcalan have been rejected so far.
(04/081) Police Intervention Towards “I Want My Job Back” Protests in Ankara…
The police intervened into the press declaration of public laborers dismissed by decree with the force of law who have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on April 6, 7, 8, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.
It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on April 6, 2018, 3 people (Mehmet Dersulu, Nazan Bozkurt and Gülnaz Bozkurt) and at 18.00, 5 people were detained.
It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on April 7, 2018, 3 people (Nazan Bozkurt, Alev Şahin, Mehmet Dersulu) and at 18.00, 3 people (Nazan Bozkurt, Mehmet Dersulu and Selvi Polat) were detained.
It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 18.00 on April 8, 2018, 2 people (Acun Karadağ, Nazan Bozkurt) were detained.
Thus in total 16 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on April 6, 7, 8, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

It is learned from news coverage of April 6, 2018 that Governorate of Ankara banned the event commemorating the 500th day of ‘‘I Want My Job Back’’ protests in Ankara’s Yüksel Street, citing state of emergency reasons.
Police intervened the group reading a statement regarding the ban in front of the planned location of the event and physically abused and detained 6 people (Mehmet Dersulu, Nazan Bozkurt, Gülnaz Bozkurt, Simge Aksan, Deniz Aydın and a person named İbrahim whose last name wasn’t identified).
(04/083) Journalists Detained in İstanbul’da…
On March 28, 2018 a deputy was appointed to Özgürlükçü Demokrasi newspaper and newspapers print house. During raids to both offices 29 people were detained. The grant holder of the newspaper İhsan Yaşar and Chief Editor İshak Yasul were sent to court on April 6, 2018 and both were arrested for ‘making propaganda of an illegal organization’ and ‘membership of an illegal organization’. Within the same investigation 20 employees of Gün print house were arrested based on the same grounds. It is learned that 7 people including editors and workers of the newspaper are still detained within the same investigation. Names of the detainees are: Mehmet Ali Çelebi, Reyhan Hacıoğlu, Hicran Urun, Pınar Tarlak, Ramazan Sola, Nedim Demirkıran, Mehmet Beyazıt.

Journalist Mehmet Dursun who was called upon to testify to Van Police Headquarters TEM branch on April 3, 2018 was detained and later arrested by court on April 7, 2018 for ‘‘making propaganda of an illegal organization’’. It is learned that Mehmet Dursun’s phone conversations with news sources were presented as evidence to the crime.

TELE 1 Television and ABC Newspaper Middle East representative Ömer Ödemiş was detained in Hatay on April 8, 2018 for ‘making propaganda of an illegal organization’ and he has been sent to Ankara.

It is learned that on April 4, 2018, 8 people were detained in İzmir based on their social media posts.
It is learned that on April 7, 2018, 5 people were detained in Denizli during the operation before President Erdoğan’s arrival for congress, based on their social media posts.
It is learned that on April 8, 2018, 9 people were detained in Aydın due to making propaganda of an illegal organization through their social media posts.

The trials of 13 academicians signing the “We Will not be a Party to this Crime” declaration continued on April 6, 2018. Cases were opened separately by Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 32 based on the accusation of ‘making propaganda of an illegal organization’. Academicians are: Prof. Dr. Şahika Yüksel, Doç. Dr. Ayten Alkan, Research Assoc. Aslı Aydemir, Prof. Dr. Ayşe Rezan Tuncay, Research Assoc. Sezen Çilengir, Yrd. Doç. Dr. Nazlı Ökten, teaching fellow Zübeyde Gaye Çankaya Eksen, Prof. Dr. Ayşe Erzan, Prof. Dr. Nesrin Sungur Çakmak, Prof. Dr. Özdemir Aktan, research associates Emre Tansu Keten, Canan Özbey, Dr. Stefo Benlisoy.
The court postpones one trial to April 12, 2018, one to June 5, 2018, one to July 21, 2018, seven trials to July 6, 2018, three trials to July 17, 2018.

The trial of Tunceli co-Mayor Nurhayat Altun for the case opened by Tunceli Heavy Penal Court No 2 continued on April 6, 2018. The indictment requests up to 22 years of jail sentence and presents 22 events and demonstrations Altun attended as political actions. Nurhayat Altun attended the trial through SEGBİS. Following the defenses, the court ruled for the continuity of Altun’s arrest and adjourned the hearing to June 20, 2018.

The final trial of former Samsun Garrison Commander Mehmet Şükrü Eken for the case opened by Samsun Heavy Penal Court No 3 took place on April 6, 2018. The court sentenced Eken to life sentence for ‘violating the constitution’.

Worker Health and Worker Safety Council (ISIG) revealed that at least 122 workers including one child and 6 women, died while working. According to ISIG data at least 394 workers died within the first 3 months of the year.

Governorate of Hakkari declared on April 6, 2018 that 30 locations in Central Hakkari, Çukurca, Şemdinli and Yüksekova will be declared as special security zones between April 9, 2018 and April 23, 2018.
