(05/022) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 5, 2022 that, in Izmir Kırıklar F Type Prison, the food given to prisoners is of poor quality and inadequate, the prices at the prison commissary are high, the number of books per prisoner is limited to 15, and the prisoners cannot use their right to chat and sports.

It is learned from the news coverage of Mary 5, 2022 that, Sıddık Güler, an 82-year-old ill prisoner who was transferred from Iskenderun T Type Prison to Izmir Menemen R Type Closed Prison under coercion, was being kept alone in a 3-people ward for 40 days.

(05/023) Hunger Strike in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 6, 2022 that, 7 prisoners in Kilis L Type Prison are on hunger strike since April 23, 2022, to protest right violations, torture and ill-treatment in prison.

(05/024) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the protest of prisoners’ families, held in front of Çağlayan Courthouse in Istanbul on May 5, 2022; and detained 2 people (Fince Akman and Cemile Çiftçi) by using physical violence, on the grounds of the ban decision of Kağıthane Sub-Governorate’s Office for events. It is reported that the police forced the journalists away. Detained people are released on the same day after statement procedures.

(05/025) Blockade to HDP Headquarters, Police Threat to Parliamentary Member and Detained People in Ankara…

On May 5, 2022, following the group of 3 people who laid a black wreath and held a press declaration in front of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) headquarters in Ankara; the police, who continued to wait in front of the building, threatened HDP Women’s Assembly Spokesperson and Batman MP Ayşe Acar Başaran. It is stated in the news reports that the police forced the journalists away as Başaran wanted to make a statement, and then said “Get the parliamentary member in”, then threatened Başaran by saying “I will nail you”.

The police also intervened the party members waiting outside of the building and detained 8 people with torture and ill-treatment. 6 people (Bahadır Demircan, Ali Özkan, Murat Karataş, Veli Saçılık, Çetin Karakaya, Hüseyin Gökoğlu) are released on the same day after statement procedures. 2 people who were injured (Yeni Yaşam newspaper distributor Mehmet Said Sırdaş and lawyer Yunus Emre Şahan) are released on May 6, 2022.

(05/026) The Case Against Person in Muğla…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 5, 2022 that, a lawsuit was filed against Şefika Gültekin, mother of Pınar Gültekin, on the grounds that she had insulted the accused Cemal Metin Avcı in the case regarding the murder of Pınar Gültekin in July 2020. The first trial of the case demanding jail sentence of 4 years and 4 months on the charges of ‘insult’ and ‘threat’ will be held at Muğla Penal Court of First Instance No 1 on October 12, 2022.

(05/027) Hrant Dink Case…

The final trial of the case against 77 people including security, national intelligence and gendarmerie personnel, on the grounds of being responsible and negligent on the murder of Hrant Dink, executive editor of Agos newspaper, was held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 14 on March 26, 2021. It is learned that the appeal application made to the Penal Chamber No 2 of the Istanbul Regional Court regarding the local court’s verdict was concluded on May 5, 2022. The court rejected the Dink family’s lawyers’ objection to the acquittal of 37 people, and ruled for a retrial for 10 defendants on charges of ‘forgery of official documents’, ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘protecting an offender’. Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 14 has sentenced 26 people to jail penalties on several charges, including 2 people to heavy life imprisonment and 4 people to life imprisonment; and acquitted 37 people, including former Intelligence Department Head Sabri Uzun and Istanbul Police Chief Celalettin Cerrah back then.

(05/028) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 11 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 1,253 as of May 5, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 98,819 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 15,038,495 as of May 5, 2022.
