(03/028) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of March 6, 2025 that, 16 prisoners in Istanbul Marmara (Silivri) Women’s Prison were subjected to 8 disciplinary proceedings for refusing to carry an ID card with the word “terror” on it, for shouting slogans (3 times), for objecting to shoe search (2 times) and for knocking on the door (2 times).

On March 5, 2025, the police intervened the press declaration about ill prisoners in front of Çağlayan Courthouse in Istanbul and detained 1 person named Hasan Toğan. Hasan Toğan was released the same day after statement procedures at the police.

On 5 Mat 2025, 3 people (Mevlüt Aykoç in Istanbul, Sami Tan in Urfa and Ronayi Önen in Diyarbakır), authors of the Kurdish education book Hinrker, were detained through an Istanbul based investigation on the allegations of ‘being an illegal organization member’.

The trial of the case against 5 people including Mehmet Ali Amak, co-mayor of Artuklu district of Mardin, is held at Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 3 on March 5, 2025. The indictment demands sentence for 5 people on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. The court adjourned the trial to April 16, 2025.

The final hearing of the retrial of the case against 9 people, including Sözcü newspaper owner Burak Akbay and journalists Emin Çölaşan, Necati Doğru and Metin Yılmaz, on the charge of ‘knowingly and willingly aiding an illegal organization’ was held on March 5, 2025. The court acquitted the journalists.

The indictment prepared by Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against journalist Dilan Yurtsever for a news article she published with the title “Confessors to be heard in Kobanê Case” was accepted by Istanbul 23rd High Criminal Court on March 6, 2025. The indictment demands Dilan Yurtsever to be sentenced for “revealing or disseminating the identities of informants”.

On March 5, 2025, Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance accepted the indictment prepared by Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against Sabri Uzun, former Head of Security Directorate Intelligence Department, for his social media posts. The indictment demands sentence for Sabri Uzun on the charges of ‘insulting the President’ and ‘publicly humiliating the Turkish nation’.

On March 6, 2025, it is learned from news coverage of March 6, 2025 that Istanbul Governorate did not give permission for an investigation against the police officers responsible for the criminal complaint about detention of 9 people by physical violence when they protested the President’s speech at TRT World Forum.

At the March 5, 2025 meeting of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (GNAT) Commission to Investigate Violence and Abuse against Children, the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) Feyzullah Tecirli and the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA) Deputy Chairman Abdülkerim Gün made discriminatory and phobic statements in their speeches.
Feyzullah Tecirli stated the following in his speech: “On the occasion of 2025 being the year of the family, we have declared 2025 as the year of the fight against screen addiction and LGBT as our second main theme.”
Abdülkerim Gün stated the following: “in terms of safe internet service, in the context of filtering, we focus on children, but we never allow LGBT content.”
