(06/047) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 5, 2024, that Mehmet Ali Uçar, a prisoner in Menemen R Type Prison, who has a 100% visual impairment report, has not been released from prison although the Forensic Medicine Institution gave the report of ‘not able to stay in prison’.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 6, 2024, that the release of Sedat Atsız, an ill prisoner in Bolu F Type Prison, whose release was postponed by Prison Administration and Observation Board for 3 months on March 1, 2024, although he had completed 30 years of his life sentence, was postponed for 3 months for the second time. It is also stated in the news reports that Sedat Atsız’s family was not informed about the reason for the postponement of his release.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 6, 2024, that 33 women prisoners in Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison were sentenced to solitary confinement for 11 to 13 days each, on the grounds of ‘making or having made education and propaganda activities for an illegal organization’, on the grounds of notes and petitions seized by correction officers during the ward search on January 26, 2024. It is also learned from the news reports that Bakırköy 4th Execution Judgeship upheld the solitary confinement sentences and the appeals to Bakırköy Heavy Penal Court No 1, which is the higher court, were rejected.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 6, 2024, that in Istanbul Marmara (Silivri) Prison, the prison administration forced women prisoners to throw away their old clothes in order to get new ones and that no response was given to women prisoners’ objection petitions.

(06/048) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan not Responded to…

It is learned that the appeal made on June 6, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

(06/049) Police Interventions Against Protests Against the Trustee Decision…

On June 5, 2024, the police intervened with tear gas against the exit of DEM Party Co-Chairs and MPs who gathered at the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Provincial Organization building in Hakkari. It is reported that no one was detained during the intervention.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 5, 2024, that DEM Party Şırnak MP Mehmet Zeki İrmez was subjected to physical violence by a police officer during the police intervention against a group of people who held a press statement in Hakkari on June 5, 2024, against the same decision.

(06/050) Police Intervention Against a Demonstration in Ankara…

At least 2 people were detained during the police intervention against the members of the Prisoners’ Families Assistance and Solidarity Association (TAYAD) who were protesting on Sakarya Street in Ankara on June 5, 2024, for the demands of Nurettin Kaya, who has been on a death fast for 228 days in Bolu F Type Prison. The total number of detainees and names of the detainees could not be learned.

(06/051) Police Intervention Against a Demonstration in Hatay…

The police intervened against the people gathering in front of a gas station on Şükrü Balcı Street on June 6, 2024, against the decision of the Ministry of Environment, Urban Planning, and Climate Change to declare Akasya neighborhood in Antakya district of Hatay as a reserve area. 4 people were detained by the police and were subjected to torture and ill-treatment. It is also stated in the news reports that the police attempted to prevent journalists from taking video footage.

(06/052) People Detained and Arrested in Mersin…

6 of 12 people who were detained in house raids in Mersin on June 3, 2024, on the grounds of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’, were arrested by the Mersin Penal Court of Peace on June 5, 2024. 5 people were released on judicial control conditions. It is learned that 1 Syrian citizen was sent to the Mersin Provincial Directorate of Migration Management’s Removal Center.

(06/053) Person Detained for May 1 Celebrations…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 5, 2024, that Yakup Kaya, executive board member of Eğitim-Sen Istanbul Branch No 7, who went to give his official statement on June 5, 2024, on the grounds of wanting to march to Taksim during May 1 celebrations, was detained and was released by the criminal peace judgeship on judicial control condition.

(06/054) People Detained in Van…

On June 6, 2024, 9 people were detained during house raids in the Tuşba district of Van. The reason for the detentions could not be learned. Names of detained people are Emrullah Derin, Cengiz Dalga, Enes Kurt, Harun Zapsu, Seyvan Boğa, Amar Kaval, Rojhat Deniz, Zerya Dalga and Murat Avcı.

(06/055) HDP Former Executive on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The retrial of the case against Hülya Alökmen Uyanık, former Diyarbakır provincial co-chair of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), started on June 5, 2024, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9, following the reversal of 11 years and 3 months imprisonment sentence by Penal Department No 3 of the Court of Cassation on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court released Hülya Alökmen Uyanık and adjourned the trial to a later date.

(06/056) The Nihat Kazanhan Case…

The retrial of the case on the killing of Nihat Kazanhan (12, m) in the Cizre district of Şırnak by the gunfire of the police, after the Constitutional Court ruled that the right to life was violated, continued on June 5, 2024, at Cizre Heavy Penal Court No 1. The court rejected the demand of lawyer Osman Cingöz for the examination of the phone records of the defendant’s family since the defendant special operations police officer M. N. G. could not be found despite a red notice and adjourned the trial to September 25, 2024.

(06/057) Police Officer on Trial in Şırnak…

The trial of the case against police officer S. E. on the allegations of hitting lawyer Serkan Karakaş with his car and injuring him on April 10, 2022, in Şırnak, continued on June 5, 2024, at Şırnak Heavy Penal Court No 3. The court rejected the demand for the arrest of police officer S. E., decided to continue judicial control measures, and adjourned the trial to October 16, 2024.

The case regarding the injury of lawyer Serkan Karakaş by car was previously filed at the Şırnak Penal Court of First Instance; the court ruled that the case should be sent to the heavy penal court.

(06/058) The Mehmet Sincar Case…

The retrial of Cihan Yıldız for the killing of Democracy Party (DEP) Batman MP Mehmet Sincar on September 4, 1993, continued on June 6, 2024, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 6. The court adjourned the trial to December 10, 2024.

(06/059) The Özgür Gündem Case…

The retrial of the case against Human Rights Association (IHD) Co-Chair Eren Keskin, Hüseyin Aykol, Ayşe Batumlu Kaya and Reyhan Çapan, for the articles published in Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, was held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 14 on June 6, 2024. The indictment demands a sentence for 4 people on the charges of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ and ‘publicly inciting to commit a crime’. The court stated that the case against Reyhan Çapan and Eren Keskin at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13 on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ was merged with the current case and adjourned the trial to October 8, 2024.

(06/060) Indictment Prepared Against People for May 1 Celebrations…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 5, 2024, that Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office issued an indictment against 12 people including 8 arrestees, for marching to Taksim during the May 1 celebrations. The indictment demands a sentence for 12 people on the charges of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’, ‘resisting to prevent duty’, ‘intentional damage to property’ and ‘intentional injury causing bone fracture’.

(06/061) Indictment Prepared Against People for the Armed Attack Against a Former İYİ Party Executive…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 6, 2024, that Manavgat Public Prosecutor’s Office prepared an indictment against 8 people including former IYI Party General Administrative Board Member A. K., on the charges of ‘attempted premeditated murder’ and 1 person on the charges of ‘opposition to the law on firearms, knives and other instruments’, in relation to the armed attack and wounding of Hüseyin Ergen, former district chair of IYI Party in Manavgat on January 31, 2024.

(06/062) Ban of Access to Web Content…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 5, 2024, that Timur Soykan’s news article titled “550 million TL loan from Halkbank to the mafia” published on the BirGün website was banned from access by Istanbul Anadolu Criminal Peace Judgeship No 9 on the grounds of ‘violation of personal rights’ and the content was ordered to be deleted.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 6, 2024, that 1 news report on https://yeniyasamgazetesi5.com, on the allegations that the Urfa Suruç District Governor demanded votes for Justice and Development Party (AKP), was banned from access by Suruç Criminal Peace Judgeship on the grounds of ‘violation of personal rights’.

(06/063) People Detained through Operations in 17 Cities…

Ministry of Interior announced on June 6, 2024, that 72 people were detained in operations conducted in 17 cities in the last 4 days. It is reported that some of the detainees had finalized prison sentences and wanted records, while some of them were detained on the allegations of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’.

(06/064) People Detained Through an Investigation by the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 6, 2024, that 9 people were detained in operations in Izmir and Balıkesir through an investigation conducted by the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, on the charges of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and ‘financing an illegal organization’.
