On January 5, 2026, the police intervened the march of Student Collectives about student scholarships and loans on Istiklal Street in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul and detained 7 people by using physical violence.

The final trial of the case against Selahattin Demirtaş, former co-chair of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), on the grounds of his speeches at events in Ankara, Diyarbakır, Mersin, and Mardin, is held at Mersin Penal Court of First Instance No 14 on January 6, 2026. The court sentenced Selahattin Demirtaş to 1 year 5 months and 15 days for ‘insulting the President’.

The trial of the case against 65 people including former Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer and former Republican People’s Party (CHP) Izmir Provincial Organization Chairman Şenol Aslanoğlu continued on January 5, 2026 at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No. 23. The indictment demands 65 people to be sentenced for ‘qualified fraud’. The court released Tunç Soyer and Heval Savaş Kaya and adjourned the trial to March 26, 2026.
It is learned that Tunç Soyer and Heval Savaş Kaya will not be released because they had been arrested through another investigation.

The trial of the case against journalist Reyhan Hacıoğlu is held at Van Heavy Penal Court No 2 on January 6, 2026. The indictment demands sentence for Reyhan Hacıoğlu on the charge of ‘being an illegal organization member’. The court decided to lift the judicial control measure for Reyhan Hacıoğlu, to continue the ban on leaving the country and adjourned the trial to March 3, 2026.
Reyhan Hacıoğlu was arrested on January 20, 2025 and was released at the first hearing of the case held on June 13, 2025.

The trial of the case against journalist Şehriban Şeker for an interview she conducted at Mersin Criminal Court of First Instance No 15 continued on January 5, 2026. The indictment demands sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’. The court adjourned the trial to January 16, 2026.

The trial of the case against journalist Barış Pehlivan for the news report on a Supreme Court of Appeals member continued on January 6, 2026 at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2. The indictment demands sentence for journalist Barış Pehlivan on the charges of ‘publicly insulting a public official for his duty’ and ‘slander’. The court adjourned the hearing to September 17, 2026.

It is learned that the website https://xcancel.com/, which is used to view invisible social media accounts and posts in Turkey, was banned from access by the decision of the Information and Communication Technologies Authority dated January 5, 2026.
