(01/043) Labour Killings…
On January 6, 2023, the Worker Health and Worker Safety Council (ISIG) revealed that at least 181 workers including 12 women, 2 children and 6 migrant workers died while working in December, 2022. 1843 workers including 108 women, 64 children and 90 migrant workers died in labour killings in 2022.
(01/044) Racist Attack in Istanbul…
It is learned from the news coverage of January 5, 2023 that, the students of Istanbul University were subjected to the attack of a racist group in Beyazıt campus and 1 person was injured in the attack. It is reported that the police did not intervene in the attacker group but detained 26 students who were subjected to the attack, and that detained students were released after statement procedures on the same day.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 6, 2023 that in Diyarbakır Women’s Prison the prisoners were prevented from video call rights.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 6, 2023 that, the prisoners in Diyarbakır Women’s Prison were transferred to hospitals in double handcuffs.

It is learned that the appeal made on January 6, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.
(01/048) Police and Gendarmerie Intervention to Funeral in Muş…
It is learned that the police prevented the funeral ceremony for musician Mîr Perwer (Mehmet Şirin Aydın) who lost his life in the armed attack on Ahmet Kaya Kurdish Cultural Center in Paris, France on December 23, 2022, which was to be held in Muş on January 5, 2023. It is learned that the gendarmerie also prevented those including the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Muş MP Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit from entering Yeşilova town for the funeral, intervened them and detained 31 people. It is reported that 1 of the detainees was released after statement procedures on the same day and 30 of them are still under custody.

It is learned that 8 people were detained in house raids in Mersin on January 8, 2023 on the grounds of “preparing for an action”. The names of detained people learned so far are: Cafer Adsay, Agit Adsay, Hamdullah Özen and Mehmet Fatih Uçankuş.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 5, 2023 that, the indictment of Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office against Birgün newspaper reporter İsmail Arı, which was prepared upon the complaint of Mustafa Varank, the Minister of Industry and Technology over the news report “Varank’s cousin got the sea view land” is accepted by Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 2. The first trial of the case on the charge of “insulting a public officer” will be held on April 24, 2023.
(01/051) Constitutional Court Decision on Freedom of Communication…
The Constitutional Court’s (AYM) decision on the application of a prisoner named Rahmi Çağan regarding the censorship of the letter he wrote in prison, was published in the Official Gazette on January 5, 2023. Rahmi Çağan’s objection to Afyon Dinar Execution Judgeship regarding the censorship of the parts in which he told his dream to his wife in the letter was rejected, and the application made to Afyon Dinar Heavy Penal Court regarding the decision was also rejected. The court ruled that the freedom of communication of Rahmi Çağan was violated, and that Rahmi Çağan should be paid 3,000 Turkish Liras for non-pecuniary damage.

It is learned that the news reports about the Grand National Assembly speaker Mustafa Şentop’s son’s application for a position at the Istanbul Technical University, published on https://www.diken.com.tr/ and https://www.gazeteduvar.com.tr/ are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights, by Ankara Penal Court of Peace No. 7 on January 5, 2023.
(01/054) Ban of Events in Hakkari…
Hakkari Governorate’s Office made a declaration on January 4, 2023 and announced that all meetings, open-door assemblies, demonstrations, marches, sit-in protests, human chains, op-ed stands, public sessions, any kind of audio-visual activities with mobile audio-visual vehicles, hunger strikes, opening stands, collecting petitions, flying sky lanterns or balloons, commemorations, concerts, festivals, theatre plays, screening shows, firing torches, distributing leaflets, hanging banners and so on are banned for 15 days as of December 30, 2022. All events are banned in Hakkari for 375 days since January 4, 2022.
