(01/034) Allegation of Forced Disappearance in Ankara…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 6, 2021 that, no news was received from Galip Küçüközyiğit, former reporter of the Prime Ministry living in Ankara who was dismissed from his job by a state of emergency decree, since December 29, 2020. It is also stated in the news reports that, official applications of Nursena Küçüközyiğit, his daughter, to Kocaeli Public Prosecutor’s Office and to Missing Persons Department of the Directorate of Security were not accepted.

(01/035) Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 5, 2021 that, 22 people who were detained in house raids in Istanbul following the protest at Boğaziçi University on January 4, 2021; were forced to lie down on the ground with handcuffs behind their backs; and they were subjected to physical violence of the police while they were put in detention car. It is also reported that those who reject to strip search were subjected to physical violence of the police.

It is reported that one person fell sick during a house raid. It is learned that the house of Sultan Aksu, local authority of Yeldeğirmeni neighbourhood in Kadıköy district of Istanbul through this investigation; and the people in the house were forced to lie down. It is learned that the police “apologized” and left the house after finding out that it was the house of local authority. It is reported that the police, raiding a house where nobody is in, demolished the wall nearby the door.

(01/036) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 5, 2020 that, in Tekirdağ F Type Prison No 2, prisoners were given daily 10-15 litres of water, which should be 200 litres.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 5, 2021 that, journalist Adnan Bilen who is kept in Van High Security Prison was not given Kurdish newspaper Xwebun.

(01/037) Police Intervention to a Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration in Ankara on January 5, 2021; organized by Ankara Women’s Platform held to call for Gülistan Doku who is missing for one year; and detained 18 people including journalists. It is learned that the police broke the cameras of journalists. Detained people are released after statement procedures at the police on the same day. The names of detained people learned so far are: Ankara Women’s Platform members Fatma Kılıçaslan, Sude Sivri, Yelda Öztürk, Deniz Akbıyık, Leyla Mavili, Beste Uymaz, Zeynep Ülger, Yaren Tuncer and Yarenur Çetin; journalists Habibe Eren, Öznur Değer, Eylül Deniz Yaşar.

(01/038) Detained University Students in Istanbul…

Following the press declaration at Boğaziçi University campus which was held on January 4, 2021 to protest the new rector appointed to the university by the President, a detention warrant was issued for 28 university students. 5 students are detained in house raids in Istanbul on January 5, 2021, which raised the number of detained people in total 22.

Mezopotamya News Agency reporter Mehmet Aslan is detained through an Antalya based investigation, on January 5, 2021 in Istanbul. It is learned that Mehmet Aslan is taken to Antalya for investigation.

(01/040) Detained Journalist in Sivas…

Journalist Mehmet Bakır is detained for his social media posts, on January 5, 2021 in Sivas. Mehmet Bakır is released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office on the same day.

(01/041) Mayor on Trial in Hakkari…

The trial of the case against Hakkari co-mayor Cihan Karaman is held at Hakkari Heavy Penal Court No 2 on January 5, 2021. Cihan Karaman was elected as Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-mayor and later he was suspended. Cihan Karaman joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. After defence hearings the court released Cihan Karaman and adjourned the trial.

Cihan Karaman was detained on October 15, 2019 and was arrested by the court on October 17, 2019. Ministry of Interior appointed governor as a trustee to Hakkari Municipality on October 17, 2019.

(01/042) The Case Against CHP Executive in Istanbul…

The indictment of Istanbul Anadolu Public Prosecutor’s Office against Republican People’s Party (CHP) Istanbul chair Canan Kaftancıoğlu for photographs of house of Fahrettin Altun, Communications Director Republic of Turkey, is accepted by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 13 on January 5, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for Canan Kaftancıoğlu from 9 months to 10 years and 6 months on the charges of ‘praising an offence and offender’ and ‘instigation’.

This investigation has ended in non-prosecution on September 29, 2020 however non-prosecution decision was lifted by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 8, upon Fahrettin Altun’s lawyers’ appeal on November 23, 2020.

(01/043) Journalist on Trial in Adıyaman…

The final trial of the case against Hacı Yusuf Topaloğlu, reporter of Dicle News Agency which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, is held at Adıyaman Heavy Penal Court No 2 on January 5, 2021. The court acquitted Hacı Yusuf Topaloğlu.

(01/044) Proceedings Against Parliamentary Members…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 5, 2021 that, 4 proceedings demanding lift of impunity of 4 parliamentary members are submitted to Grand National Assembly.

Parliamentary members subjected to proceedings are:

  • HDP Kocaeli MP Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu;
  • HDP Urfa MP Ömer Öcalan;
  • HDP Urfa MP Nusrettin Maçin;
  • HDP Diyarbakır MP Remziye Tosun.

(01/045) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On January 5, 2021, 22 people including military members on active duty are detained in operations covering 10 cities through an Ankara based investigation against Land Forces Command personnel.

(01/046) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 194 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 1,477 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on January 5, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 case is 14,494.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 21,879 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 2,270,101 as of January 5, 2021.

It is learned that 3 health workers (Ayyuş Eryılmaz in Kilis, doctor Öztekin Yüce in Aydın and tomography technician Özgül Yaşar in Samsun) lost their lives due to Covid-19 on January 5, 2021.
