It is learned that Said Abdinnasır Jaman, a Somali citizen and a university student in Samsun, was found dead in his residence on December 5, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 6, 2023, that in Izmir Şakran Women’s Prison, the heaters are not turned on in the wards, prisoners are not given cold water regularly, and the hot water is scarce.

(12/037) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded to…

It has been reported that the appeal made on December 5, 2023, by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bursa, requesting a visit, has not received a response.

(12/038) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Urfa…

On December 6, 2023, gendarmerie intervened with batons and pepper spray against the people who were protesting the dismissal of a worker in front of his workplace in Urfa on the grounds that he was a union member, and detained 22 people, including BİRTEK-SEN Chair Mehmet Türkmen by using physical violence.

On December 5, 2023, 3 people (Bahar Köse, Ahmet Turan Sertkaya, Tahsin Çolak) were detained in house raids in Malatya on the allegation of ‘financing an illegal organization’.

(12/040) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Mezopotamya Agency (MA) editor Abdurrahman Gök continued on December 5, 2023 at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5. The indictment demands a sentence for Abdurrahman Gök on the charges of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. After defences, the court released Abdurrahman Gök and adjourned the trial to March 12, 2024. Abdurrahman Gök was detained in Diyarbakır on April 25, 2023, and arrested on April 27, 2023.

The trial of the case against 12punto.com.tr Editor-in-Chief Mustafa Büyüksipahi and Cumhuriyet newspaper reporter Nagihan Yılkın, upon the complaint of then Antep Governor for a news report they published, continued on December 5, 2023, at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2. The court adjourned the hearing to February 15, 2024.

The trial of the case against journalist İsmail Saymaz, upon the complaint of the judge in charge of the Gezi Park Trial, continued on December 5, 2023, at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 24. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charges of ‘ insulting a public official’ and ‘targeting a public official who took part in the fight against terrorism’. The court adjourned the hearing to January 23, 2024.

The trial of the case against documentary filmmaker Sibel Tekin continued on December 5, 2023, at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 26. The indictment demands a sentence for Sibel Tekin on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court adjourned the hearing to January 16, 2024.

Sibel Tekin was detained on December 16, 2022, arrested on December 17, 2022, and released on January 30, 2023 on judicial control condition following a detention review.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 6, 2023, that the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office prepared an indictment against Veli Saçılık on the grounds of his social media post. The indictment demands a sentence for Veli Saçılık on the charge of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’.

(12/045) The Suruç Massacre Case…

On December 5, 2023, Urfa Heavy Penal Court No 5 continued to hear the case against fugitive defendant Deniz Büyükçelebi and İlhami Bali in connection with the bomb attack in the Suruç district of Urfa on July 20, 2015, in which 33 people lost their lives. The court rejected the request to hear then Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu as a witness and adjourned the hearing to March 21, 2024.

(12/046) The Hande Buse Şeker Case…

The retrial of the case against police officer Volkan Hicret on the grounds of killing trans woman Hande Buse Şeker by sexually assaulting her on January 9, 2019, in Izmir, was held on December 5, 2023. The court sentenced the defendant police officer to life imprisonment for the murder of Hande Buse Şeker.

(12/047) Police Officer on Trial in Diyarbakır…

On December 5, 2023, the trial of the case against police officer S. G. for the torture and ill-treatment of Rojbin Sevil Çetin by using a police dog in a house raid in Diyarbakır on June 26, 2020, was held at Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No 9. The indictment demands a sentence for the defendant police officer on the charge of ‘simple injury.’ Lawyers’ request to send the case file to the Heavy Penal Court with a decision of non-jurisdiction on the grounds that the crime is within the scope of torture was rejected by the court, and the hearing was adjourned to February 27, 2024.

(12/048) Gendarmerie Personnel on Trial in Tokat…

The trial of the case against 2 gendarmerie personnel (S. Ö. and S. A.) regarding the torture and ill-treatment of Osman Kale started on December 5, 2023, at Tokat Penal Court of First Instance No 1. The defendant gendarmerie personnel did not attend the hearing. The court adjourned the trial to November 27, 2023.

It is learned that the news reports on bribery allegations in the courthouse on https://www.birgun.net, https://haber.sol.org.tr, https://www.gazetepencere.com websites were ordered to be deleted by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of Peace No 6 on December 4, 2023.
