(08/048) Male Violence Monitoring Report…

According to “Male Violence Monitoring Report” of Bianet published on August 6, 2021, at least 24 women and 4 children got killed by men in July 2021. It is also reported that 7 women were raped, at least 36 women were forced to sex work, 77 women were subjected to violence, 13 children were abused by men in July, 2021.

(08/049) People Died in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 5, 2021 that, Cenk Sarı, a prisoner kept in Antalya E Type Prison lost his life due to heart attack.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 5, 2021 that, Mehmet Özen, a 37-year-old prisoner who was released from Burdur E Type Prison after having a brain haemorrhage on July 25, 2021, lost his life.

(08/050) Asylum Seeker Found Dead in Van…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 5, 2021, an Afghan asylum seeker was found dead in the rural areas of Muradiye district of Van. It is learned that the body of this unidentified person is taken to Van Regional Education and Research Hospital for autopsy.

(08/051) Operations and Attacks…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 5, 2021 that, a wildfire started during the military operation in rural areas covering 10 villages of Nusaybin district of Mardin which was launched following a curfew; and that the security officers prevented the villagers from intervening the fire.

(08/052) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Hakkari…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 5, 2021 that, Abbas Kızıltaş who was detained in a house raid in Köycük village of Yüksekova district of Hakkari on July 31, 2021 and his wife were subjected to torture and ill-treatment during the house raid.

Abbas Kızıltaş’s wife stated the following the press: “They came in the morning and handcuffed my husband. They pulled 3 guns to his head. There were more than 40 soldiers around him. They arrested him. I have a baby in the house. They came in, searched the house. They put a gun to my head so that I would not go near my husband. My little son was sleeping, and they were almost stepping on him. I said ‘Watch out, my son is sleeping there, what did he do’ and they started yelling at me (…) They beat my husband so bad that he could not walk. His eyes were not even visible. They did not let us see him after detaining him. The soldiers took my husband and another detainee along with themselves to a military operation. They both were naked. ‘If anything happens, let them be the first to be damaged’ said the soldiers.”

Abbas Kızıltaş’s mother stated the following: “As my son went out of home, more than 50 soldiers gathered around him. They pulled their guns to his head and his back. I said ‘Stop, he is innocent’ and they forced me out of there. I said ‘Take off your guns, he needs to breathe’ but they pushed my son to the ground, put 3 guns to his head and said ‘We will kill him’. (…) They stripped him down before my eyes, and they beat him naked. Then they took him to a hill, and tormented him until half past eleven. They took him to a military operation and he was still naked. Our sons were walking in the front and the soldiers were following them, ‘If someone will get killed, let them be these ones’ they said.”

(08/053) Abducted Person in Ankara…

It is learned that Devrim Taylan Eryılmaz, a member of the Socialist Youth Associations’ Federation, was forcibly taken into a car by 3 persons who represent themselves as police officers; and he was released after being hold captive at a car park for several hours on August 5, 2021.

(08/054) Person Forced to be a Police Informant in Istanbul…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 5, 2021 that, actress Ayşenur Demir was forced to be a police informant on August 2, 2021 in Kadıköy district of Istanbul.

Ayşenur Demir stated the following to the press: “At around 2 p.m. I was stopped by three police officers in front of a bagel seller near Hasanpaşa Police Station. When I submitted my ID card, the police officers showed me a file. They said they wanted to talk and asked for information, mentioning the Foundation of Science, Education, Aesthetics, Culture and Art Researches co-chairs. They threatened to detain me. They said ‘A house raid might occur at 3 a.m. one night and we might detain you too’. And they implied that they have information about my personal life.”

(08/055) Attack on Journalists in Muğla…

On August 5, 2021, a group intervened the live broadcast about wildfires of Halk TV channel, in İçmeler town of Marmaris district of Muğla. The group attacked presenter Gökmen Karadağ, guest journalists İsmail Saymaz and Murat Ağırel, lawyer Salim Şen and CHP Muğla MP Burak Erbay. It is reported that the attackers said “We will stop you in case you speak wrong” and attacked them with glass bottles. 5 people were detained in relation to the attack and 4 of them (B. T., Ş. U., S. Y., F. Ç.) are released after statement procedures at the police and 1 person (M. T.) is released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office on the same day.

(08/056) Police Prevention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police prevented the press declaration of the Education and Science Employees’ Union (Egitim-Sen) branch No 6, in front of Boğaziçi University Campus on August 5, 2021. It is learned that the press declaration was held at union office in the campus.

(08/057) Journalist on Trial in Aydın…

The indictment of Aydın Public Prosecutor’s Office against journalist Ahmet Kanbal, upon criminal complaint of Lieutenant Musa Çitil of Gendarmerie General Command, is accepted by Aydın Heavy Penal Court No 3 on August 5, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for Ahmet Kanbal on the charges of ‘turning a counterterrorism official into a target’ and ‘insulting Musa Çitil’.

(08/058) Investigation Against People for Social Media Posts…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 5, 2021 that, Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against people sharing “Global Call: Help Turkey” on social media, in relation to the wildfires in Turkey. The number of people subjected to investigation is unknown.

(08/059) Curfew in Nusaybin…

Mardin Governorate made a declaration on August 5, 2021 and announced curfew in 4 rural neighbourhoods (Serinkaya, Eroğlu, Görentepe and Yavruköy) of Nusaybin district as of 04.00 on August 5, 2021 until a further notice.

The governorate’s office made another declaration on the same day and lifted curfew as of 19.00.

(08/060) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On August 5, 2021, 1 person is detained in a house raid in Ankara.

(08/061) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 108 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 24,297 as of August 5, 2021.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 51,875 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 5,846,784 as of August 5, 2021.
