(05/047) Labour Killings…

On May 7, 2023, the Worker Health and Worker Safety Council (ISIG) revealed that at least 122 workers including 9 women and 7 migrant workers died while working in April, 2023. 585 workers including 46 women, 6 children and 31 migrant workers died in labour killings in the first four months of 2023.

(05/048) Person Forced to be Police Informant in Istanbul…

The People’ Law Office announced that their client Savaş Taş was forced to be a police informant at Gazi Police Station in Sultangazi district of Istanbul on May 6, 2023.

(05/049) May 14, 2023 General Elections…

It is learned that 1 person (Arafat Ekmekçi) of 29 members and executives of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) and the Greens and Left Future Party (YSP) Youth Assembly who were detained in house raids in Istanbul on May 2, 2023, is arrested by the court on May 5, 2023. 28 people are released.

It is learned that the election campaign tent of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Beşiktaş district of Istanbul was tried to be set on fire by anonymous person or persons on May 5, 2023. It is learned that the tent was damaged as a result of this attack.

It is learned that 1 person was detained in relation to the attack on the Justice and Development Party (AKP) provincial office in Ankara on May 5, 2023.

It is learned that a campaign vehicle of YSP was intervened by the gendarmerie in Antakya district of Hatay on May 6, 2023 and those in the vehicle were subjected to physical violence of the gendarmerie.

It is learned that an attack damaged the campaign office of the Left Party in Fındıklı district of Rize on May 6, 2023. 2 people who were detained in relation to the attack was released after statement procedures.

It is learned that a group attacked on the campaign stand of the Left Party in Yenimahalle district of Ankara and injured 2 people on May 6, 2023. It is reported that the police detained 2 members of the Left Party after the attack and they were released on the same day.

The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) chair Devlet Bahçeli stated the following at the rally in Yalova on May 6, 2023: “A tragic end awaits the Republican People’s Party and its alliance partners on May 14. Kılıçdaroğlu’s alliance partners promise to abolish the Presidency of Religious Affairs and say that they will take Afrin back. These traitors can only take aggravated life sentences or bullets in their bodies.”

It is learned that the public meeting of YSP in Çankaya district of Ankara on May 7, 2023 was prevented by the police on the grounds of lack of permission.

On May 7, 2023, a group attacked the rally of CHP in Erzurum with stones, and it is learned that at least 17 people including 1 child were injured in the attack. CHP’s campaign vehicle was damaged in the attack. CHP executives had to end the rally upon attack and it is reported that the police did not intervene in the attackers. It is learned that the same group removed flags of İyi Party in the area afterwards.

The police used physical violence to detain 4 people on the grounds of wearing yellow-red-green scarfs and wristbands, after the women rally of YSP in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on May 7, 2023.

It is learned that a group of AKP and MHP members attacked on CHP members who were visiting shopkeepers in Trabzon on May 7, 2023. It is learned that nobody was injured.

5 people were injured in the attack on the campaign vehicle of YSP in Tarsus district of Mersin on May 7, 2023. It is also learned that the vehicle was also damaged.

It is learned that the women stand of the Left Party at Cemal Süreya Park in Çankaya district of Ankara was prevented by the police on the grounds of lack of permission on May 7, 2023.

It is learned that the campaign stand of YSP was removed by the municipality officers in Haleti district of Urfa on May 7, 2023, on the grounds of “road maintenance and repair”, and that in the same area a campaign tent of AKP was established afterwards.

(05/050) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 5, 2023 that, the book of the Civil Society Association in the Penal Execution System (CISST) “Being Imprisoned on Aggravated Life Sentence in Turkey” was not allowed in Denizli T Type Prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 6, 2023, Furkan Foundation chair Alparslan Kuytul who is kept in Ağrı Patnos L Type Prison was subjected to disciplinary proceedings for saying “May Allah save our nation from this dictatorship” to his wife on the phone on April 19, 2023 and was given the penalty of 3 days of solitary cell.

(05/051) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on May 5, 2023 to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by families and tutelary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, in order to visit them was not responded.

(05/052) Police Intervention to Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened in the press declaration of Saturday Mothers/ People held at the Galatasaray Square of Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on May 6, 2023, and detained 24 people including the HRFT Executive Board member and the Turkish Medical Association (TMA) chair Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı, the Human Rights Association (HRA) Istanbul branch chair Gülseren Yoleri and HRFT Executive Board member and Istanbul representative Ümit Efe. Detained people are released on the same day. Detained people were: Hanife Yıldız, Mikail Kırbayır, İrfan Bilgin, Maside Ocak, Hasan Karakoç, Faruk Eren, Filiz Karakuş, Sebla Arcan, Şebnem Korur Fincancı, Gülseren Yoleri, Ümit Efe, Leman Yurtsever, Meryem Göktepe, Gamze Hızlı, Mümtaz Murat Kök, Meriç Eyüboğlu, Erhan Pekçe, Sinan Gökçen, Ali Tosun, Yaşar Demircan, Nimet Tanrıkulu, Hilmiye Öz, Döne Gevher, Hüseyin Aygül.

Journalist Banu Acun was detained at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport on the grounds of an investigation against her, on May 7, 2023. It is learned that Banu Acun was released on the same day.

Academician Berk Esen was detained at Istanbul Airport on the grounds of his social media posts, on May 7, 2023. It is learned that Berk Esen was released on the same day.

(05/055) Detained People Through Ankara Based Investigation…

It is learned that 33 people were detained in house raids in 19 cities through an Ankara based investigation on May 8, 2023, on the grounds of cyber attacking websites of public institutions through the RedHack group.

(05/056) Detained Journalist and Other People Through Istanbul Based Investigation…

It is learned that 12 people including Yeni Demokrasi newspaper reporter Ertan Çıta and readers of Partizan magazine were detained in house raids in Tunceli and Istanbul, through an Istanbul based investigation on May 6, 2023. The names of the detainees learned so far are: Ertan Çıta, Ali Asker Akkoç, Nihat Konak, Aysel Kaya, Nesimi Ataş, Cem Karakuş, Arzu Özdemir.

(05/057) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against journalist Bülent Mumay, over the news reports about the ban of access to the news reports about confiscation of the loan given to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, is held on May 5, 2023. The Court sentenced Bülent Mumay to 1 year and 8 months on the charge of ‘unlawfully obtaining or disseminating personal data’ and postponed the sentence.

(05/058) People on Trial in Izmir…

The first trial of the case against 21 people is held at Izmir Penal Court of First Instance No. 28 on May 8, 2023. 21 people were detained by the police intervening in in the sit-in protest in front of the Dokuz Eylül University Rectorate on February 17, 2023 to protest online education decision for universities due to the earthquakes. The court adjourned the trial to March 14, 2024.

It is learned that the news report about the allegation that the President’s family company received a foreclosure notice, published on https://www.sozcu.com.tr, https://ilerihaber.org, https://artigercek.com websites were banned to access and ruled to be deleted on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of Peace No. 9 on May 5, 2023.

(05/060) Earthquakes in Antep and Maraş…

The Minister of Family and Social Services made a statement on May 5, 2023 and declared that a total of 1,914 unaccompanied children were registered in the system, 1,818 of them were identified and given to their families, 23 children were in the hospital, 63 children were in the institutions of the ministry, and 2 children could not be identified.
