(09/050) Operations and Attacks…

The Ministry of National Defence (MSB) announced on 4 September 2024 that 1 soldier (Osman Ayan) died in hospital due to a suspected heart attack during the ‘’Pençe 1-2‘ operation in the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

(09/051) Male Violence Monitoring Report…

According to the ‘Male Violence Monitoring Report’ published by Bianet on 4 September 2024, at least 37 women and 6 children were killed by men in Turkey in August 2024. It is also stated in the report that men inflicted violence on at least 63 women, harassed 7 women, abused 12 children and forced 36 women to sex work.

(09/052) Suspicious Soldier Death in Bolu…

It is learned from the news coverage of 4 September 2024 that, A. Ç., a soldier on duty in Bolu F Type Prison, died suspiciously in the tower where he was on guard duty. It is learned that the cause of death of A. Ç. is reported as suicide and an investigation is initiated.

(09/053) Armed Attack on a Party Executive’s Car in Izmir…

2 people (E. Ç. and A. Y.) who were detained in connection with the armed attack on 3 September 2024 against Republican People’s Party (CHP) Izmir Kemalpaşa District Chair Ahmet Yılmaz’s car parked in front of his residence, were arrested by the criminal peace judgeship on 4 September 2024.

(09/054) Alleged Death Threat to a Journalist…

It is learned from the news coverage of 5 September 2024 that 2 people (O. Ö. and Y. K.) were detained in Izmir in relation to a video circulated on social media, claiming that a contract was launched for the killing of journalist Murat Ağırel.

The Directorate General of Security (EGM) made the following statement on 4 September 2024: ‘In the operations carried out by our Intelligence Directorate regarding the videos that have appeared on various social media platforms in recent days and that contain allegations that Mahsun KURUÇAY, the leader of a crime organization, will carry out an armed attack on journalist Murat AĞIREL; it has been determined that the masked person in the videos is O. Ö. and the person who recorded the videos is Y. K. On 04.09.2024, under the coordination of our KOM Directorate, suspects were detained in their residences in Izmir in an operation carried out by the Izmir Anti-Organised Crime Branch Directorate, 3 pistols, a quantity of narcotic substances, 4 mobile phones and 1 tripod were seized together with the suspects. It was determined that the person named O. Ö. had a suspicious record for 12 different offenses and the person named Y. K. had a suspicious record for 2 different offenses”.

(09/055) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

According to the news coverage of 4 September 2024, prisoners in Ankara Sincan High Security Prison No 2 can only benefit from sports, social and cultural activities for 2.5 hours a day, which should be 10 hours a day according to the legislation, and prisoners sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment are taken to ventilation for 1 hour a day, other prisoners were taken to ventilation for 1 hour and 50 minutes and prisoners were forced to be searched in ventilation, prison administration prevented prisoners from exchanging books and newspapers among themselves, and the products sold in the canteen are of poor quality and high priced.

It is learned from the news coverage of 4 September 2024 that, some prisoners in Giresun Espiye F Type Prison were subjected to threats from the correction officers, and newspapers and letters sent to prisoners were not delivered.

It is learned from the news coverage of September 4, 2024, that hospital transfers of ill prisoners in Ankara Sincan High-Security Prison No 2 are frequently postponed or canceled.

(09/057) Prisoner Whose Release Was Postponed by the Prison Administration and Observation Board…

It is learned from the news coverage of 5 September 2024 that, the release of Nedime Yaklav, a prisoner in Ankara Sincan Women’s Prison, who completed her life sentence of 30 years on 1 April 2023, was postponed for the fifth time on the grounds of ‘not being in good behavior’ by the Prison Administration and Observation Board on 22 August 2024 and was extended for 9 more months.

It is learned that the appeal made on September 5, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers in order to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

(09/059) Police Intervention Against a Worker Protest in Izmir…

It is learned from the news coverage of September 4, 2024 that, workers who were dismissed from Izmir Menemen Municipality on the grounds of economic reasons after the local elections held on March 31, 2024, marched from Cumhuriyet Square in the Menemen district to Menemen Municipality; and that the police intervened with tear gas against the workers who wanted to enter the municipal council hall. It is reported that no one was detained during the intervention.

(09/060) A Journalist and Others on Trial for May 1 Celebrations…

The first trial of the case against 34 people including journalist Ali Kadir Güler, 4 of whom are arrested, for attempting to march to Taksim during 1 May celebrations, started on 4 September 2024 at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 47. The indictment demands a sentence for 34 people on the charges of ‘resisting to prevent the execution of duty’, ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’, ‘intentional injury’ and ‘damaging public property’. After defense hearings, the court released 4 arrested people (Hüdanur Keser, Cemalettin Apa, Ömer Faruk Taştan and Ümit Deniz) on judicial control conditions with a ban on leaving the country and adjourned the trial to 4 December 2024.

(09/062) A Lawyer and Life/Environment Defender on Trial in Erzincan…

On 4 September 2024, the trial of the case against lawyer İsmail Hakkı Atal and life/environment defender Sedat Cezayirlioğlu, who made a statement after the explosion of a cyanide solution pipe in a gold mine in the İliç district of Erzincan on 21 June 2022, started at İliç Penal Court of First Instance. The indictment demands a sentence for 2 people on the charge of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’. After defense hearings, the court adjourned the trial to 20 November 2024.

(09/063) A Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The first trial of the case against journalist Mehmet Güleş, on the grounds of 5 posts he made on social media, started on September 5, 2024, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4. The indictment demands a sentence for the journalist on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization in a chain’. The court acquitted Mehmet Güleş.

(09/064) A Lawyer on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against lawyer Burhan Arta, on the grounds of his activities as a lawyer, continued on 5 September 2024 at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4. The prosecutor declared the final opinion on the case and demanded a sentence for Burhan Arta on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court adjourned the trial to 5 December 2024.

Burhan Arta was detained on 25 April 2023, arrested on 28 April 2023 and released on 25 May 2023 upon objection.

(09/065) An Indictment Prepared Against a Person for Her Statements in a Street Interview…

It is learned that the Izmir Public Prosecutor’s Office issued an indictment against 1 person named Dilruba Kayserilioğlu, on the grounds of her expressions in a street interview in Izmir, criticizing the ban on access to Instagram. The indictment demands a sentence for Dilruba Kayserilioğlu on the charge of ‘insulting the President’.

Dilruba Kayserilioğlu was arrested on 12 August 2024 on the grounds of ‘inciting the public to hatred and hostility’ and ‘insulting the President’ due to her statements in the street interview and was released on 29 August 2024. In the lawsuit filed against her at Izmir Penal Court of First Instance No 35 on the grounds of ‘inciting the public to hatred and hostility’ and ‘publicly insulting a section of the public’, the court sentenced Dilruba Kayserilioğlu to 7 months and 15 days of imprisonment and deferred the announcement of the verdict.

(09/066) Detained People…

The Ministry of Interior announced on 5 September 2024 that 34 people were detained in operations conducted in 19 provinces on the allegations of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’, ‘using ByLock’, ‘communicating via payphones’ and ‘having a finalized prison sentence’.
