(03/020) Male Violence Monitoring Report…

According to the ‘Male Violence Tally Sheet’ published by Bianet on March 5, 2025, at least 17 women and 9 children were killed by men across Turkey in February 2025. It is also stated in the statement that men inflicted violence on at least 51 women, harassed 8 women, abused 5 children and forced 110 women to sex work.

(03/021) No Answer to the Application for Meeting with Abdullah Öcalan

It is learned that the appeal made on March 4, 2025 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa in order to visit PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

(03/022) The Case Against Bar Association Executives…

The first hearing of the lawsuit filed by Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against Istanbul Bar Association President İbrahim Kaboğlu and 10 members of the board of directors for their social media posts about journalists Nazım Daştan and Cihan Bilgin who lost their lives in Northern and Eastern Syria, started on March 4, 2025 at Istanbul Commercial Court of First Instance No 21. The lawsuit demands the dismissal of the members of the Istanbul Bar Association Board of Directors and its President and the holding of elections for a new President and Board of Directors. The court rejected the request of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations and 100 lawyers to intervene in the case and adjourned the hearing to March 21, 2025, deciding that Fırat Epözdeir, a member of the Board of Directors arrested from another case, will attend the next hearing via SEGBİS.

(03/023) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against journalists Barış Pehlivan, Kürşad Oğuz, Suat Toktaş, Seda Selek and Serhan Asker started on March 4, 2025 at Istanbul 54th Criminal Court of First Instance on the grounds of sharing the phone calls of the expert mentioned in the press statement of Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. The indictment demands sentence for journalists on charges of ‘interception and recording of conversations between individuals’ and ‘attempting to influence a judicial officer, expert or witness’. The court acquitted all journalists and released Suat Toktaş on the charges of ‘attempting to influence a judicial officer, expert or witness’. The court ruled that the file should be sent to the reconciliation office for ‘interception and recording of conversations between individuals’ as the condition for reconciliation was not met.

Barış Pehlivan, Kürşad Oğuz, Seda Selek, Suat Toktaş and Serhan Asker were detained on January 29, 2025. 4 of the journalists were released on the same day with judicial control conditions; Suat Toktaş was arrested on January 30, 2025.

The final trial of the case against Kazım Güleçyüz, former executive editor of Yeni Asya newspaper, is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 28 on March 4, 2025. The court sentenced Kazım Güleçyüz to 1 year and 3 months for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’.

(03/025) Party Member on Trial in Izmir…

The indictment of Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) worker Fatma Funda Akbulut was accepted by Izmir Heavy Penal Court No 18 on March 4, 2025. The indictment demands sentence for Fatma Funda Akbulut on the charge of ‘being an illegal organization member’. The court also ruled to lift the house confinement measure against Fatma Funda Akbulut. The first hearing of the case will be held on June 18, 2025.

(03/026) Investigation Against Party Executive in Aydın…

It is learned that Aydın Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against Fatih Karahan, former Aydın provincial chair of Felicity Party, on the grounds of insulting the President and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) chair in social media posts, and that Fatih Karahan gave his official statement through the investigation on March 4, 2025.

(03/000) Investigation on Party Congress…

It is learned from news coverage of March 4, 2025 that Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against the last Istanbul Provincial Congress of Republican People’s Party (CHP), on the grounds of ‘rigging the elections’ and ‘violating the Election Law’.

(03/027) Security Guard on Trial for the Death of Mehmet Uytun

The retrial of the case against specialist sergeant H.A. on the charge of ‘causing death by negligence’ in the case where a 16-month-old baby named Mehmet Uytun died on October 9, 2009 when he was hit in the head by a gas canister fired by security forces intervening in a protest on the balcony of his house in Cizre district of Şırnak, continued on March 4, 2025 at Cizre 1st Criminal Court of First Instance. The court rejected the demand for arrest of the defendant specialist sergeant H.A. and adjourned the trial to June 26, 2025.
