Worker Health and Worker Safety Assembly (ISIG) declared on March 5, 2024, that at least 144 workers, including 4 women, 6 children, and 4 migrants/refugees, lost their lives while working in February 2024.
(03/039) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Ankara…
It is learned that some of the detainees were subjected to verbal and physical violence and ill-treatment of the police during house raids conducted on March 5, 2024, through an investigation by the Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Ethem Özgan, father of Lokman Sefkan Özgan, one of the detainees, stated the following to the press: “The police broke down our door at 06.00 in the morning and forced their way into our house. As soon as they entered the house, they put us all on the ground and put a gun to our heads. They insulted and swore at us. They threatened us with death. They told us, ‘What are you doing here, if we come again we will come to shoot you’. Then they took our child away. They took a report and forced us to sign it as if nothing happened. They forcibly videotaped us and made us say that nothing happened here”.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 4, 2024, that a person named A.İ., who was detained in the Ulukışla district of Niğde on July 9, 2023, was subjected to physical violence and ill-treatment by two police officers named M.K. and R.U. at the police headquarters. It is also reported that A.İ. was injured due to physical violence and a lawsuit was filed against two police officers on the charges of ‘qualified injury’ and ‘insult’, and against A.İ. on the charges of ‘resisting to prevent duty’, ‘detaining transportation vehicles’, ‘attempting to damage public property’ and ‘insult’.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 5, 2024, that the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Bursa İnegöl district office was attacked and material damage occurred. It is reported that the person who attempted to attack a party member with an axe is detained and the DEM Party will file a criminal complaint about the attack.
(03/042) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of March 4, 2024, that prisoners in Samsun Kavak S Type High-Security Prison, who participated in the hunger strike in prisons across Turkey demanding an end to the isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan and a democratic solution to the Kurdish issue, bought some items from the commissary and items were not delivered to the prisoners by the prison administration. It is also learned that prisoners were forced to stand up during roll-calls and were also subjected to strip search during body searches, and prisoners who reacted to these impositions and practices were subjected to physical violence from the correction officers and were threatened with words like “These are your better days. You will see what more we will do to you”.

It is learned that the appeal made on March 5, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa, to visit PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded to by Bursa Public Prosecutor’s Office.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 4, 2024, that houses where trans women live and some shops in Beyoğlu Bayram Street were sealed by the police and district police officers upon the decision of Istanbul Beyoğlu District Governorate.

At least 19 people were detained in house raids on March 5, 2024, through an investigation by Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. The reason for the detentions could not be learned. The names of the detainees are as follows: Nujin Altunkılıç, Ümit Bozan, Busenur Öztürk, Abdulkadir Barkın, Helin Kaya, Diyar Hatip Bilen, Lokman Sefkan Özgan and Muhammed Okay.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 5, 2024, that a new indictment is prepared against Hülya Alökmen Uyanık, former Diyarbakır provincial co-chair of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and it is decided to join this indictment with the case file of Hülya Alökmen Uyanık on Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on the charges of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ and ‘being a member of an illegal organization’.

The indictment of Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against Berk Alıcı, Adana provincial executive of Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP), on the charge of ‘insult’ for a social media post he made on May 22, 2020, about Ahmet Mahmut Ünlü, popularly known as Cübbeli Ahmet, is accepted by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No 61. The first hearing of the case will be held on May 3, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 4, 2024, that the acquittal of former Interior Minister Mehmet Ağar, İbrahim Şahin, Korkut Eken, Ayhan Çarkın, Ayhan Akça, Ziya Bandırmalıoğlu, Ercan Ersoy, Ahmet Demirel, Ayhan Özkan, Seyfettin Lap, Enver Ulu, Uğur Şahin, Alper Tekdemir, Yusuf Yüksel, Abbas Semih Sueri, Lokman Külünk, Mahmut Yıldırım, Nurettin Güven, Muhsin Korman was upheld by Ankara Regional Court 1st Criminal Chamber.

Journalist Ali Barış Kurt was sentenced to 2 years and 4 months in prison for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ by Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 2, which was approved by Ankara Regional Court of Appeals Penal Department No 4. The sentence was upheld by the 3rd Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation on March 4, 2024.
(03/050) Journalist on Trial in Tunceli…
On March 4, 2024, the final hearing of the lawsuit filed against journalist Serkan Gürtürk, who refused to pay a fine of 10.031 TL for refusing to comply with the access ban on a news report on the mayor and district governor of Çemişgezek district of Tunceli in 2022, was held at Çemişgezek Penal Court of First Instance. The court acquitted the journalist.

The trial of the case against 5 people, including village guards S.Y. and C.A., for subjecting a child named S.A. (17) to qualified sexual assault and keeping her in sexual captivity since the age of 7 in the Uludere district of Şırnak, continued on March 4, 2024, at Şırnak Heavy Penal Court No 3. The court issued a compulsory appearance warrant for 2 people and adjourned the trial to March 18, 2024.

The trial of the case against Gülsüm Elvan, mother of Berkin Elvan who was killed by a gas canister fired by the police during Gezi Park protests, and his father Sami Elvan, was held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 43 on March 5, 2024. The indictment demands a sentence for 2 people on the charge of ‘insulting the President’. The court adjourned the trial to September 10, 2024.

The final hearing of the lawsuit filed against Chair of Kuruçeşmeliler Association Gökhan Akkaya, on the charges of ‘public threat’ and ‘insult’, regarding DEM Party Kocaeli MP Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu being subjected to insults and threats by Gökhan Akkaya, during his election campaigns in Kuruçeşme neighborhood of İzmit before the May 14, 2023 elections, was held at Kocaeli Penal Court of First Instance No 8 on March 5, 2024. The court sentenced Gökhan Akkaya to 8 months and 22 days in prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 4, 2024, that as a result of the decision taken by Isparta Provincial Sports Security Board on February 29, 2024, Amedspor fans will not be admitted to the football match between Amedspor and Isparta 32 Spor to be played on March 6, 2024, at Isparta Atatürk Stadium, and fans coming to Isparta from Diyarbakır and surrounding cities will be prevented from entering Isparta.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 5, 2024, that, 1 news report on https://yeniyasamgazetesi5.com about the allegation that Justice and Development Party (AKP) Diyarbakır Sur District Chair gave parcels prepared for earthquake victims to his relatives and AKP members and executives was banned to access by Diyarbakır Criminal Peace Judgeship No. 4.
