(07/054) Operations and Attacks…

Ministry of National Defense (MSB) announced on July 4, 2024, that 1 soldier (Cebrail Acar) died in a clash between the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) units and HPG militants during the “Pençe-Kilit” operation in Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

(07/055) Racist Threat Against Syrian Refugees/Asylum Seekers…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 5, 2024, that a social media account made a racist attack threat with the words “We will start rioting in Sultanbeyli (Istanbul) between 19.00-20.00” and shared identity information of Syrian refugees/asylum seekers.

The Ministry of Interior made the following statement on July 4, 2024: “…An investigation revealed that the administrator of the social media account is 14-year-old E. P. It was also understood that the identity information of Syrians under Temporary Protection was shared from the same account. Necessary action was taken against E. P. by the Istanbul Juvenile Branch Directorate…”.

The Directorate of Migration Management made the following statement on July 5, 2024, regarding the leak of identity information of refugees/asylum seekers: The information in question has been examined and it has been determined that there is information that does not match the current information in our Directorate of Migration Management. For this reason, a large-scale investigation has been initiated in order to determine which years these data belong to, from which source, and on which date they were obtained.

(07/056) Syrian Refugee/Asylum Seeker Children Wounded in Racist Attacks in Antalya…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 4, 2024, that Hasan Khalif El Nayif (15, m) and Bashar Obaid Al-Marai, friends of Syrian refugee/asylum seeker child worker Ahmet Handan El Naif, who lost his life due to a racist attack in the Serik district of Antalya on July 3, 2024, were also wounded due to a racist attack and were taken under treatment in hospital.

It is also reported in the news that Syrian refugees/asylum-seekers living in the Serik district started to move out of the neighborhoods they live in.

(07/057) Racist Attacks in Antalya…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 4, 2024, that 3 vehicles of Syrian refugees/asylum seekers were set on fire in the Kepez district of Antalya on July 3, 2024. It is also reported in the news that there was an attack with Molotov cocktails. However, it is not known whether the attack was against people or places such as workplaces or houses.

It is learned that on the same date, a house of Syrian refugees/asylum-seekers was attacked with stones in the Aksu district of Antalya.

(07/058) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 4, 2024, that 250 prisoners in different prisons in Istanbul Marmara (Silivri) Prison Campus got poisoned from the food given on June 28, 2024, and were referred to hospital in groups of 40 people each. It is also stated in the news reports that some of the prisoners who were poisoned were treated in the prison infirmary and were not referred to the hospital despite of prisoners’ demands.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 5, 2024, that the release of Fermani Çetin, a prisoner in Bolu F Type Prison, was postponed by the Prison Administration and Observation Board on the grounds of ‘not being in good behavior’, on the grounds of 3 solitary confinement sentences, 2 of which were annulled by European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and local court decisions.

(07/059) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan not Responded to…

It is learned that the appeal made on June 28, 2024, to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s family and tutelary along with the families and tutelary of Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

(07/060) Party Executive and MP Prevented from Entering the Boğaziçi University Campus…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 5, 2024, that after the rector Naci İnci, who was appointed to Boğaziçi University by the President, banned the mass graduation ceremonies, the rectorate played loud music during the alternative graduation ceremony organized by Boğaziçi University students and prevented the students and academicians from speaking. It is learned that the MPs of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) assigned to Boğaziçi University Hisarüstü Campus were physically intervened by private security units and were prevented from entering the campus.

(07/061) People Detained and Arrested in Relation with the Racist Attacks Against Syrian Refugees/Asylum Seekers…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 4, 2024, that 13 of 60 people who were detained in Bursa on the grounds of participating in racist attacks against Syrian refugees/asylum seekers, were arrested by the criminal peace judgeship and 15 of them were released provided that 15 of them will be on judicial control conditions.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 4, 2024, that 1 of 11 people who were detained in the Serik district of Antalya for the same reason on July 3, 2024, was arrested by the criminal peace judgeship and 10 people were released on judicial control conditions.

Ministry of Interior announced on July 5, 2024, that 13 of 855 people who were detained in Kayseri in connection with the racist attacks and social media posts targeting Syrian refugees/asylum seekers were arrested by the Criminal Peace Judgeship and 145 of them were released on judicial control conditions.

In the same statement, it was also reported that a total of 1065 people were detained in connection with the racist attacks across Turkey, 28 of these people were arrested and 187 of them were released on judicial control conditions.

(07/062) Human Rights Defender on Trial in Ankara…

On July 4, 2024, the trial of the lawsuit filed against HRFT Board member Prof. Dr. Şebnem Korur Fincancı by the Turkish Armed Forces (“TSK”) against her for her statements on a news channel about the alleged use of chemical weapons by the TSK units in Zap, Metina and Avaşin regions of Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (“KRG”), continued at Ankara Civil Court of First Instance No 2 with a demand of 200.000 TL compensation. The court rejected the lawyers’ request for dismissal of the lawsuit and adjourned the hearing to September 24, 2024.

(07/063) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against journalists Barış Terkoğlu, Barış Pehlivan, Can Bursalı, Nevzat Çiçek, Doğan Akın, Gökmen Karadağ, Fatih Portakal, Can Özçelik, regarding the book ”Metastaz 2: Cendere” continued on July 4, 2024, at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2. The indictment demands a sentence for journalists on the charges of ‘slander’ and ‘public insult’. The court decided to merge journalist Ayşenur Arslan’s case with the current case and adjourned the trial to November 28, 2024.

(07/064) Osman Kavala’s Demand for Retrial Was Rejected…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 5, 2024, that Anadolu Kültür Chair Osman Kavala, who was sentenced to heavy life imprisonment in the Gezi Park Trial and whose sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court of Appeals, made a request for retrial on the grounds of law through his lawyer, which was rejected by the Ministry of Justice.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 4, 2024, that 3 news reports on https://www.gazeteduvar.com.tr, https://www.birgun.net and https://t24.com.tr, prepared by journalist Asuman Aranca, on the allegations that Ayhan Bora Kaplan bribed a police chief, were banned from access by Istanbul Criminal Peace Judgeship No 10 on July 4, 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights; and that the content was ordered to be deleted.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 4, 2024, that 3 news reports on https://www.sozcu.com.tr, https://artigercek.com, and https://www.gazetepencere.com, prepared by journalist Erdoğan Süzer, about a former minister becoming the CEO of Northern Marmara Motorway, were banned from access by Istanbul Criminal Peace Judgeship No 1 on July 4, 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights.

(07/066) Detained People…

The Ministry of Interior announced on July 4, 2024, that 108 people, including those with finalized prison sentences, were detained in operations conducted in 29 provinces due to ‘being a member of an illegal organization’.
