(01/032) Trans Woman Murdered in Izmir…

It is learned that a trans woman (Ece E.) was killed in Konak district of Izmir on January 4, 2023; and that 1 person (M. F.) was detained in relation to the murder.

(01/033) Asylum Seeker Subjected to Sexual Assault of Soldiers in Van…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 4, 2023 that, an Afghan asylum seeker woman (L. M.) who was detained by the soldiers at the border in Saray district of Van on January 2, 2023 was subjected to sexual assault of 2 soldiers. It is reported that 2 soldiers were arrested by the court and Saray Public Prosecutor’s Office ruled a confidentiality order on the case.

(01/034) People Subjected to Torture and Ill-Treatment in Mardin…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 5, 2023 that, 2 people including 1 child (B. K. and Hüseyin Gökalp) were subjected to torture and ill-treatment of the special operations police officers who stopped them for wearing traditional clothes. It is reported that 2 people have made a criminal complaint to Nusaybin Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding the torture.

(01/035) TMA Chair and HRFT Board Member on Trial…

It is learned that on January 4, 2023 Istanbul Regional Court of Justice approved the penalty fine of 7,080 Turkish Liras given on February 16, 2021, by the Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 42 in the case against the Turkish Medical Association (TMA) chair and HRFT executive board member Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı, for a social media post about Gezi Park protests in 2013, on the grounds of insulting the Prime Minister back then.

(01/036) GÖÇİZ-DER Case…

The trial of the case at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 26 against 23 members and executives of the Migration Monitoring Association (GÖÇİZDER) including Bilal Yıldız, the social worker at the HRFT Istanbul office, is held in the courtroom of the Marmara (Silivri) Prison Compound on January4-5, 2023.

The court decided to release 13 arrested defendants with a ban on leaving the country and adjourned the trial to May 3-4, 2023. The court has released 4 defendants (Songül Kaya, Kamile Kandal, Veysi Yıldız, İlyas Erdem) on December 15, 2022 and has ruled to continue detention of 13 defendants.

(01/037) Izmir Bar Association Executives on Trial…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 5, 2023 that, the indictment of Izmir Public Prosecutor’s Office against Izmir Bar Association’s former chair and 10 former members of the executive board, on the charge of ‘publicly degrading religious values’ in their statement titled “Defend life in spite of hatred” about the expressions targeting LGBTI+s in a sermon of the Presidency of Religious Affairs; is accepted by Izmir Heavy Penal Court No. 1 and the first trial will be held on April 24, 2023.

(01/038) The Case Against Person Subjected to Torture and Ill-Treatment in Van…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 5, 2023 that, the indictment against F. K., a schizophrenia patient who was subjected to physical violence of the police intervening in the protest in Van on August 21, 2019 against trustee appointments to Diyarbakır, Mardin and Van municipalities, was subjected by Van Penal Court of First Instance No. 6. The first trial of the case on the charge of ‘resisting to prevent public duty’ will be held on January 26, 2023. The prosecutor’s office has ruled non-prosecution in the investigation against police officers regarding the torture and ill-treatment allegations.

(01/039) Disclaimer Penalty for Newspaper…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 4, 2023, that upon the complaint of the district governor of Köşk district of Aydın regarding the news report “The people stand up for their water and land” published on Evrensel newspaper on July 29, 2022, Aydın Penal Court of Peace No. 2 decided that a disclaimer text will be published as an advertisement on two websites and two newspapers with a circulation of over one hundred thousand. Aydın Penal Court of Peace No. 2 had previously issued a disclaimer decision and the text of the disclaimer was published in the issue of Evrensel newspaper dated October 6, 2022.

On January 5, 2023, the Constitutional Court accepted the request of the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Court of Cassation to block the accounts of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) with Treasury aid as part of the closure case against the party.

(01/041) Ban of Access to Web Contents…

It is learned that the news reports about Adil Karaismailoğlu, the Transport and Infrastructure Minister, published on https://www.sozcu.com.tr/ and https://ilerihaber.org/ websites are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of Peace No. 9 on January 3, 2023.

(01/042) Ban of Events in Kars…

Kars Governorate’s Office made a declaration on January 3, 2023 and announced that all events such as press declarations, sit-in protests, meetings, opening tents and stands, collecting petitions, commemorations, festivals, concerts, theatre plays, all audio and visual events, distributing leaflets, hanging banners and so on, and entrance of those who came to participate in such events in the city is banned for 7 days as of January 4, 2023.
