(01/016) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Balıkesir…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 4, 2022 that, 2 people (M. V. E. and another person with unknown name) were subjected to torture and ill-treatment of the police, and 1 of them was subjected to sexual assault of a police officer using a gun, on the grounds of ‘disobeying the stop warning’ during a road control in Ayvalık district of Balıkesir on December 1, 2021. It is reported that, the parliamentary question of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Kocaeli MP Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu about torture allegations was returned by the Grand National Assembly on the grounds of being “rude and hurtful” on December 14, 2021.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 4, 2022 that, Kasım Yiğit, a prisoner in Şırnak T Type Closed Prison was kept in a solitary cell for 20 days before being put in a ward, and the Quran and clothes sent by his family were not given to him.

It is learned that the appeal made on January 4, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit him was not responded.

(01/019) Police Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police used pepper spray and rubber bullets to intervene the stall owners protesting the change of place of the farmers’ market in Gaziosmanpaşa district of Istanbul on January 4, 2022. It is learned that nobody was detained but several people got injured.

(01/020) Police Intervention to a Protest in Ankara…

The police used physical violence to intervene the group of prisoners’ families who wanted to march to the Ministry of Justice building from the Grand National Assembly after participating in the group meeting of HDP on January 4, 2022. It is reported that the police forced the group to get in the busses, prevented the journalists from recording and used physical violence against HDP Iğdır MP Habip Eksik.

Mezopotamya News Agency executive editor Ferhat Çelik is detained by the undercover police coming to his house in Istanbul on January 4, 2022. It is learned that the reason of detention is an investigation of Gaziantep Public Prosecutor’s Office.

(01/022) Investigation Against Journalist in Izmir…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 4, 2022 that, the investigation against PIRHA reporter Ersin Özgül on the grounds of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ has ended in non-prosecution. Ersin Özgül has been detained in Izmir on May 5, 2021.

(01/023) Torture and Ill-Treatment Allegations in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 4, 2022 that, the criminal complaint of Garibe Gezer’s lawyers to Kandıra Public Prosecutor’s Office on the grounds of ‘sexual assault’, ‘torture’, ‘excessive use of force’ and ‘neglect of duty’ in Kocaeli Kandıra F Type Prison No 1, has ended in non-prosecution. Garibe Gezer has been subjected to torture and sexual assault of the correction officers on May 21, 2021 in prison and was found suspiciously dead in the solitary cell on December 9, 2021.

It is learned that the news reports about the narcotic drug found in Mersin Port, published on https://www.yenicaggazetesi.com.tr/, https://www.sozcu.com.tr/ and https://www.cumhuriyet.com.tr/ websites, are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of Peace No 1 on January 3, 2022.

(01/025) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On January 4, 2022, 15 people are detained in operations covering 7 cities through an Istanbul based investigation and 55 people are detained in operations covering 40 cities through an Ankara based investigation.

(01/026) Special Security Zones in Şırnak…

Şırnak Governorate made a declaration on January 3, 2022 and announced 11 areas in Cizre and Silopi districts as special military security zones until December 31, 2022.

Special military security zones: Cudi Mountain, Bestler Dereler, Kurt Mountain, Kureşin, Karaçalı, Kel Mehmet Mountain, Serin, 2088 Rk T., Küçük Su, Gabar Mountain, Altın Mountain, İncebel Mountain, Oymakaya and Tanin.

(01/027) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 137 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 54,724 as of January 4, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 82,932 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 9,652,394 as of January 4, 2021.
