It is learned from the news coverage of December 4, 2023, that 2 militants died in a clash between security forces and HPG militants in rural areas of the Beytüşşebap district of Şırnak on August 9, 2023.

Cemal Tarhan (68), an ill prisoner who was released on November 6, 2023, for health reasons, lost his life on December 4, 2023.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 4, 2023, that Hüseyin Karaoğlan, a prisoner in Ankara Sincan High-Security Prison No 1, has been on an indefinite hunger strike since September 11, 2023, demanding to be transferred to a prison close to his family and to be released from disciplinary penalties.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 4, 2023 that, Hüseyin Karaoğlan, a prisoner kept in a single room in Ankara Sincan High-Security Prison No. 1, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike since September 11, was subjected to physical violence by the correction officers and was injured in various parts of his body.

It is learned from the news coverage of December 4, 2023, that Dursun Yaman, a prisoner in Kocaeli Kandıra F Type Prison No 2, has been reported that some of the books he bought were not delivered to him on the grounds that the books “used religious names, distorted religious information, took verses and hadiths out of their context, translated them according to his beliefs and understanding, could have an adverse effect on the beliefs of Muslims who lack the opportunity to access and verify the sources, and that it misrepresents Islam and the Prophet of Islam by pretending to tell the truth and provide religious information.”

It is learned from the news coverage of December 4, 2023, that journalist Neşe İdil was threatened by the chair of Bursa Ülkü Ocakları on social media for a news report she made, saying, “Ülkü Ocakları is a heavy burden, it cracks bones.”

(12/031) Police Intervention Against a Protest in Urfa…

On December 4, 2023, gendarmerie intervened with pepper spray against the people who wanted to go to a workplace in Urfa to protest the dismissal of a worker on the grounds of being a union member and detained BİRTEK-SEN Organizing Expert Deniz Kar and İsmail Sevinç by using physical violence. 2 people were released on the same day.

(12/032) HDP Executive and Another Person Detained in Mardin…

Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) former district co-chair Şiyar Koç, who was detained through a Muş based investigation in the Nusaybin district of Mardin on December 1, 2023, and then taken to Muş, was arrested by the court on December 4, 2023, on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’.

(12/033) The Vartinis Massacre Case…

On December 4, 2023, Kırıkkale Heavy Penal Court No. 1 held the final hearing of the retrial against former Gendarmerie Captain Bülent Karaoğlu, former Commander of Hasköy Gendarmerie Station, in connection with the acquittal by the Court of Cassation in the case of the burning deaths of 9 members of the Öğüt family on May 17, 1993 in Altınova (Vartinis) town of Korkut district of Muş province when soldiers set their house on fire. The court decided to dismiss the case on the grounds of a ‘statute of limitations.’

In the final hearing of the case held on March 1, 2016, the court acquitted all 4 defendants. On January 26, 2023, the Court of Cassation Penal Chamber No 1 upheld the acquittal verdicts for 3 defendants and reversed the verdict for 1 defendant.

(12/034) Banned Events and Protests…

The Governorate of Van announced on December 4, 2023, that press declarations, sit-in protests, polls, setting up/opening tents and stands, organizing petitions, distributing leaflets, brochures, and flyers, and similar actions and activities are banned for 3 days as of December 5, 2023.
