(04/032) Male Violence Monitoring Report…

According to the “Male Violence Monitoring Report” of Bianet published on April 5, 2023, at least 23 women and 4 children got killed by men in March 2023. It is also reported that at least 66 women were subjected to violence, 2 women were harassed, 102 women was forced to sex work and 14 children were abused by men in March 2023.

(04/033) Earthquakes in Antep and Maraş…

According to the information recorded by Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, on February 6, 2023, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 in Şehitkamil district of Antep which struck at 04:17 local time and an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 in Ekinözü district of Maraş which struck at 13:24 local time killed at least 50,399 people in Adana, Adıyaman, Antep, Diyarbakır, Elazığ, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Maraş, Osmaniye and Urfa, as of April 5, 2023.

The Minister of Family and Social Services made a statement on April 5, 2023 and declared that a total of 1,915 unaccompanied children were registered in the system, 1,774 of them were identified and given to their families, 56 children were in the hospital, 79 children were in the institutions of the ministry, and 34 children could not be identified.

It is learned from the news coverage that, the number of contractors who were arrested for their responsibility in the buildings collapsed in Antep and Maraş earthquakes is 327 as of April 4, 2023.

(04/034) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on April 4, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

(04/035) Gendarmerie Intervention to a Protest in Hatay…

The gendarmerie used pepper spray to intervene in the watch protest against the dumping of the rubble of the buildings destroyed in the earthquake in Samandağ district of Hatay into the area of the tent cities, and detained 20 people, on April 4, 2023. It is learned that 12 people were released on the same day, while 8 people are still under custody.

(04/036) Preventions and Interventions of Abdullah Öcalan’s Birthday Events…

The group wanting to Ömerli neighbourhood of Halfeti district of Urfa on April 4, 2023, to participate in PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s birthday events, were stopped at the checkpoint on Suruç-Bilecik road. It is learned that the group was not allowed in the neighbourhood and had a press declaration at the point they were stopped.

The police detained 5 people after the event held in Küçükçekmece district of Istanbul on April 4, 2023 for the same cause. Detained people were released after statement procedures on the same day. Detained people were: Fince Akman, Cemile Çiftçi, Kumri Agül, Evin Genç, Dilek Demir.

(04/037) Detained Journalist in Karabük…

Demirören News Agency reporter Ali Sencar Arslan was detained on April 4, 2023 on the grounds of the news about Jeannah Danys Dinabongho Ibouaganga, a Gabonese citizen and Karabük University student, who was found dead in the Filyos Stream in Karabük. It is learned that the reason for the detention was ‘violation of the confidentiality of the investigation’. Ali Sencar Arslan was released on the same day after statement procedures.

(04/038) Detained Person in Istanbul for ‘Insulting the President’…

It is learned that a person named T. K. was detained on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ in a Street interview in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on April 4, 2023, and was released by the court on the same day on house confinement.

(04/039) Detained People in Mardin…

3 people (Şükriye Göktürk, Botan Sarıboğa, Serhat Senor) who were detained in house raids in Kızıltepe and Nusaybin districts of Mardin on April 4, 2023, are released after statement procedures on April 5, 2023.

(04/040) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against Evrensel newspaper’s editor-in-chief Görkem Kınacı, upon the complaint of Sakarya Governorate’s Office regarding the news report titled “Racist attack in Sakarya: Dad dies, son under treatment” about the racist attack in Sakarya on December 16, 2018; is held at Istanbul Bakırköy Penal Court of First Instance No. 21 on April 4, 2023. The court decided to acquit Görkem Kınacı.

(04/041) HDP Executives on Trial…

The first trial of the case against 11 former members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) central executive board, for the declaration about the Armenian Genocide, is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No. 48 on April 4, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for the politicians on the charge of ‘degrading Turkish nation, the state of the Republic of Turkey, and the bodies and organs of the state’. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to October 11, 2023.

(04/042) The Case for Closure of the We Will Stop Femicide Platform Association…

The trial of the closure case against the We Will Stop Femicide Platform Association is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 13 on April 5, 2023. The court rejected involvement requests of the HRFT and several institutions and adjourned the trial to September 13, 2023.

(04/043) May 14, 2023 General Elections…

It is learned that 12 people who were detained by the gendarmerie intervening in the people gathering for the opening of the Green Left Party election campaign office in Halfeti district of Urfa on April 3, 2023, are released after statement procedures on April 4, 2023. Detained people were: Ahmet Atış, Ahmet İstek, Mahmut Payam, Çiğdem Karakeçili, Emin Tutal, M. Güli Büyüktürk, Halil Genç, Selahattin Algaç, Ömer Kıstak, Seyid Öztürk, Mehmet Öztürk and Sadık Dilbaz.

(04/044) Administrative Fine for TV Channels…

It is learned from the news coverage of April 5, 2023 that the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK) issued administrative fines for Halk TV channel for the criticisms after the earthquakes, FOX TV channel for the expressions of the news anchor, and Tele1 TV channel for criticisms about the relief activities after the earthquakes.

(04/045) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On April 5, 2023, 22 people were detained in operations covering 10 cities through an Izmir based investigation.
