(10/077) Suspicious Death in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of 5 October 2024 that, İbrahim Hakkı Savaşeri (45, m), a prisoner in Balıkesir Bandırma Open Prison was found unconscious in the corridor of the prison and lost his life in Bandırma Training and Research Hospital. It is reported in the news that an investigation has been initiated.

(10/078) Person Wounded Due to Police Fire in Adana…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 6, 2024, that Engin D., who was wanted for a finalized prison sentence in the Yüreğir district of Adana, was wounded due to the fire opened by the police on the grounds that he allegedly tried to escape during an identity check and some people and his relatives attacked the police officers. It is also reported in the news that an investigation has been initiated.

(10/079) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Urfa…

It is learned that 2 people (Hasan Harman and Sinan Harman) were subjected to physical violence by the police officers and were handcuffed behind their backs when they asked for a search warrant after their car was stopped and wanted to be searched in the Karşıyaka neighborhood of Karaköprü district of Urfa on October 5, 2024. It is also learned that 2 people who objected to being handcuffed behind their backs were sprayed with tear gas from close range. It is also reported in the news that Hasan and Sinan Harman got a medical report documenting the torture and filed a complaint against the police officers, whereas the police officers filed a complaint against Hasan and Sinan Harman on the grounds of ‘resisting to prevent duty’.

(10/080) Prisoner Whose Release Was Postponed by the Prison Administration and Observation Board…

It is learned from the news coverage of 5 October 2024 that, the release of Kenan Küçük, a prisoner in Elazığ F Type Prison, who completed his sentence on 25 September 2024, was postponed for 6 months by the Prison Administration and Observation Board (CİGK).

(10/081) Attack Against a Protest in Rize…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 5, 2024, that, Dr. Kemal Sağlam, a lecturer at Artvin Çoruh University Faculty of Art and Design, who was protesting against Israel’s attacks on Gaza during the opening of a food chain alleged to support Israel, was physically attacked by 10 anonymous people in a shopping mall in Çarşı neighborhood of Rize and was wounded in various parts of his body. It is also reported in the news that Kemal Sağlam got a medical report documenting the physical violence and filed a complaint against the attackers.

Kemal Sağlam stated the following to the press: “When I was withdrawing money from the bank, I saw the opening of the food chain and shouted ‘Down with Israel’ (…) They followed me to the road, I was almost hit by cars, they ran after me and beat me, they beat my ears, they beat my nose, 10 people beat me. Then I got into a car and they beat the driver with me”.

On 4 October 2024, the police intervened against the members of the Resistance Tent who were protesting trade relations with Israel during the speech of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who attended TEKNOFEST 2024 event held at Adana Şakirpaşa Airport, and detained 3 people. The detainees were released the same day after statement procedures. The names of the detained people could not be learned.

(10/083) Private Security Intervention Against a Protest in Kocaeli…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 6, 2024 that, environment/life defenders who protested Justice and Development Party (AKP) group deputy chair Bahadır Nahit Yenişehirlioğlu, who gave a speech at 14th Kocaeli Book Fair held between October 4 – 13, 2024, for his role in the preparation of the draft ‘Law on Amendment of the Law on Protection of Animals’, were forced out of the hall by private security guards.

(10/084) Association Member Arrested in Istanbul…

On 4 October 2024, Doğan Karataştan, a member of the Association for Solidarity with Families of Prisoners (TAYAD) in the Kağıthane district of Istanbul, was arrested by the criminal peace judgeship after being detained on the grounds of violating judicial control conditions. It is also claimed in the news reports that Doğan Karataştan had previously petitioned for a change of his judicial control address, but his request for a change of address was not processed.

(10/085) Academic on Trial in Istanbul…

The final trial of the case against Prof. Dr. Beyza Üstün, who participated in the ‘Editor-in-Chief on Watch’ campaign to support Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree and became the editor-in-chief for 1 day, was held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13 on October 4, 2024. The court sentenced Beyza Üstün to 1 year and 3 months for ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ and deferred the announcement of the verdict.

(10/086) Village Guards and Others on Trial in Şırnak…

The trial of the case against retired village guards Sıddık Babat and his son Ebubekir Babat, retired village guards Enver Babat and Ömer Yarar, for the armed attack on 11 December 2023 in the rural area of Şenoba in Uludere district of Şırnak in which Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Şenoba Municipal Council Member and party executive Ahmet Gün lost his life and his son Abdurrahim Gün was wounded, was held at Şırnak Heavy Penal Court No 3 on 4 October 2024. The indictment demands a sentence for 4 people on the charges of ‘intentional killing’ and ‘attempted intentional killing’. The court rejected the demand of Gün family’s lawyer Özüm Vurgun to file a criminal complaint against the defendants on the charge of ‘making false statements’ due to contradictory statements given by the defendants and adjourned the trial to 27 November 2024. The court did not release Sıddık Babat, the only arrested defendant in the case.

It is learned from the news coverage of 4 October 2024 that, 1 news report on https://www.birgun.net, about the payments made by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality to various sects and communities during the administration of Justice and Development Party (AKP), was banned from access by Istanbul Criminal Peace Judgeship No 9 on 3 October 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights.

It is learned from the news coverage of 5 October 2024 that, 2 news reports on https://www.hurriyet.com.tr and https://www.haberler.com and 1 post on a social media platform, about the murder of two women by the same man in Istanbul on 4 October 2024, were banned from access by Istanbul Criminal Peace Judgeship No 1 on the grounds of protection of public order, prevention of crime and protection of public health, on 4 October 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of 5 October 2024 that, 3 news reports on https://www.birgun.net, https://www.veryansintv.com, and https://www.tamgaturk.com, on the allegations of Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) Chair Ebubekir Şahin placing his relatives in various positions in RTÜK, were banned from access by Ankara Criminal Peace Judgeship No 4 on 4 October 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights, and the content was ordered to be deleted.

It is learned from news coverage of 6 October 2024 that, 3 news reports on https://www.gazeteduvar.com.tr, https://www.yenicaggazetesi.com.tr, and https://www.politikyol.com, about the allegations that a primary school principal who is a member of Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) built a luxurious office room and threatened parents by saying ‘MHP is behind me’, were banned from access by Istanbul Anadolu Criminal Peace Judgeship No 10 on 4 October 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights, and the content was ordered to be deleted.

(10/088) Broadcast Bans…

It is learned from the news coverage of 4 October 2024 that, Istanbul Criminal Peace Judgeship No 1 ruled a broadcast ban on the news reports on the killing of Ayşenur Halil (19, f) and İkbal Uzuner (19, f) by a man named Semih Çelik in the Fatih district of Istanbul on 4 October 2024, and the suicide of the perpetrator Semih Çelik, until the investigation is completed, and issued an access ban on the news reports on the issue on the internet.

(10/089) Discriminatory Statements by a Party Chair…

It is learned from the news coverage of 6 October 2024 that, Özgür Özel, chair of the Republican People’s Party (CHP), made a speech at a public meeting in the Defne district of Hatay and used discriminatory expressions such as ‘Let’s send these asylum seekers to their hometowns with drums and zurna, there is no other solution’.

(10/090) Detained People…

On 7 October 2024, 10 people were detained in house raids in Konya, Ankara, Istanbul, and Isparta on the grounds of being in the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) secret structure, through an investigation conducted by the Konya Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. The names of the detainees could not be learned.
