(10/019) Attack on Journalist in Tekirdağ…
It is learned that Deniz Önal, editor of the local newspaper Şarköy’ün Sesi, was subjected to attack of a person who is reported to be the brother of Şarköy district mayor on October 3, 2022, on the grounds of a news report. It is also reported that Yakup Önal, the grant holder of the newspaper was threatened to death by the same person.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 3, 2022 that, some prisoners in Diyarbakır Women’s Prison were taken to hospital due to food poisoning.

It is learned from the news coverage of October 3, 2022 that, ill prisoner Ekim Polat in Denizli T Type Prison was not receiving treatment. Ekim Polat has started hunger strike on August 1, 2022 and has gave a break due to health issues on September 10, 2022.

4 Iranian asylum seekers who were detained by the police intervening in the press declaration of Ankara Women’s Platform to protest the death of Mahsa Amini by torture and ill-treatment of the police in Iran, held in Çankaya district of Ankara on October 2, 2022, are released on October 3, 2022.

On October 3, 2022, 6 executives of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) are detained at the Provincial Security Directorate where they have been to make official statements. The reason for detention is unknown. Detained people are: HDP Erzurum provincial co-chairs Muammer Duman and Türkan Sümbül, provincial executive Yüksel Kişi, HDP Karayazı district co-chair Çetin Demir, HDP Karaçoban district co-chairs Remziye Tosun and Emin Tosun.

The Democratic Regions Party (DBP) central executive board member Ökkeş Kava is detained in Van on October 3, 2022. The reason for detention is unknown.

27 people who were detained in Mersin on September 28 and 29, 2022 are released by the court on October 3, 2022 provided that 14 of them will be on juridical control conditions.
(10/026) Co-Mayor on Trial in Diyarbakır…
The trial of the case against Naşide Toprak, HDP co-mayor of Silvan district of Diyarbakır who was suspended and replaced by a trustee, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 8 on October 4, 2022. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to November 24, 2022. Naşide Toprak was suspended by the Ministry of Interior on March 23, 2020 and the sub-governor was appointed as a trustee.
(10/027) Co-Mayor on Trial in Diyarbakır…
The Penal Department No. 2 of Diyarbakır Regional Court of Justice concluded on the appeal against the 7 year and 6 months of jail sentence given to Filiz Buluttekin, HDP co-mayor of Sur district of Diyarbakır, by Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 11 on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on October 3, 2022. The Penal Department No. 2 overturned the sentence on the grounds that the evidence in the case file were not sufficient to impose a sentence on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and sent the case file to Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 11.
(10/028) Union Executives and Members on Trial in Ankara…
The trial of the case against 8 people, including the Health and Social Service Workers’ Union (SES) co-chair several central executive board members, is held at the Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 22 on October 3, 2022. The indictment demands sentence for former co-chairs Gönül Erden and Bedriye Yorgun, current co-chair Selma Atabey, former central executive board members Belkıs Yurtsever and Fikret Çağlayan, former Ankara Branch executives Rona Temelli, Erdal Turan and Ramazan Taş, on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. After defence hearings, the court decided to continue detention of Gönül Erden and Selma Atabey and adjourned the trial to December 26, 2022.
Gönül Erden was among those who were detained on May 25, 2021 through the investigation on members and executives of SES, and was released on June 1, 2021. She was detained once again on September 21, 2021 upon the prosecutor’s appeal and was arrested by the court. Selma Atabey was arrested at the trial of the case held on July 4, 2022.

The trial of the case against journalist Hayri Demir on the charges of “being an illegal organisation member” and “making propaganda for an illegal organisation” is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 15 on October 3, 2022. It is learned that Hayri Demir was interrupted by the court board as he was mentioning journalist Ferhat Tepe who was forcibly disappeared under custody. The court adjourned the trial to December 21, 2022.

The trial of the case against journalist Engin Korkmaz, on the grounds of insulting the President on social media posts, is held at Antalya Penal Court of First Instance No. 19 on October 3, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to February 6, 2023.
