Worker Health and Worker Safety Council (ISIG) declared on March 4, 2025 that at least 121 workers including 7 women, 4 children and 4 migrants/refugees died while working in February 2025.
(03/014) Detained Mayor and Other People in Istanbul…
Alaatin Köseler, Republican People’s Party (CHP) elected mayor of Beykoz district of Istanbul, who was detained on February 27, 2025 due to ‘bid rigging’, was arrested by the criminal court of peace on March 3, 2025. Moreover, 12 of detained people through the same investigation are arrested while 5 people are released on judicial control conditions.
(03/015) Detained People Through Izmir Based Investigation
On March 4, 2025, 30 people including 13 members of Confederation of Public Employees Trade Unions (KESK) were detained in operations covering 11 cities through an Izmir based investigation on the allegation of ‘financing an illegal organization’.
(04/016) Human Rights Defender on Trial in Istanbul…
The first trial of the case against human rights defender Nimet Tanrıkulu started on March 4, 2025 at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 24. The indictment demands sentence for Nimet Tanrıkulu on the charge of ‘being an illegal organization member’. Nimet Tanrıkulu attended the hearing and made her defense. In her defense, Tanrıkulu stated the following regarding the torture and ill-treatment she was subjected to after being detained “I wanted to call my lawyer Eren Keskin, but I was also prevented from doing so. I was told that I would be taken to Ankara and was subjected to insults along the way (…) During the hospital check, a man, who I learned was from Ankara TEM, entered the hospital when men were not supposed to enter. After that moment, my journey became even more difficult, I was constantly insulted. When we reminded those who raided our house in the early hours of the morning about the law, they said, “What right, what law! We are the law, we are the justice!’”
Following the defenses, the court released Nimet Tanrıkulu and adjourned the hearing to a later date.
Nimet Tanrıkulu was detained in Istanbul on November 26, 2024 and arrested in Ankara on November 29, 2029.
(03/017) Journalists on Trial in Istanbul…
The final hearing of the lawsuit filed against Görkem Kınacı, former Managing Editor and Kürşat Yılmaz, Concessionaire of Evrensel Newspaper, for two news reports published in the newspaper in 2022, was held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2 on March 4, 2025. The court sentenced journalists to 10 months on the charge of ‘slander’.

It is learned from news coverage of March 3, 2025 that, Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against CHP Istanbul provincial chair Özgür Çelik, on the grounds of violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations.
(03/019) Suspended Mayor in Istanbul…
Alaatin Köseler, the CHP elected mayor of Beykoz district of Istanbul, was suspended from his post by the Ministry of Interior on March 4, 2025 following his arrest on March 3, 2025.
