(06/016) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…
According to news reports published on June 4, 2025, it has been learned that 14 prisoners detained in the Istanbul Marmara (Silivri) Prison Complex as part of investigations targeting the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) will be transferred to prisons in other provinces against their will and without their consent. The names of the prisoners to be transferred are as follows: Kağan Sürmegöz (Bolu F Type), Burak Arslan Bolu (Gerede L Type), Barış Kılıç (Eskişehir Prison), Metin Bal (Izmir F Type No. 1), Taner Çetin (Izmir F Type No. 1), Murat Çalık (Izmir F Type No. 2), Yakup Öner (İzmir F Type No. 2), Elçin Karaoğlu (Karatepe Prison), Ziya Gökmen Togay (Kocaeli Kandıra F Type No. 1), Melih Geçek (Kocaeli F Type No. 2), Fatih Özçelik (Tekirdağ F Type No. 1), Gökhan Köseoğlu (Tekirdağ F Type No. 2), Elif Güven, Fatoş Pınar Türker.

Among the 36 people detained as part of an Istanbul-based investigation targeting the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) are Avcılar Mayor Utku Caner Çaykara, Büyükçekmece Mayor Hasan Akgün, Gaziosmanpaşa Mayor Hakan Bahçetepe, Ceyhan Mayor Kadir Aydar, Seyhan Mayor Oya Tekin, and former CHP MP Aykut Erdoğdu. Of these, 22 were arrested by the criminal court on June 3, 2025,. Fourteen individuals were released with a judicial control condition. In the same investigation, one individual was arrested on June 2, 2025, and another was released.

Bianet Editor Tuğçe Yılmaz was detained by police on June 3, 2025, in the Kadıköy district of Istanbul on the grounds that there was an arrest warrant against her during a GBT application. Tuğçe Yılmaz, who had legal proceedings initiated against her under Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) on the grounds that she had committed the crime of “insulting the Turkish nation and the Republic of Turkey” due to a news report she had published, was released after undergoing interrogation at the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on June 4, 2025.

On June 3, 2025, four members of the Arsîsa Group (Tuncay Taştan, Murat Koçak, Ayşe Güler, and Derya Kanpolat) who performed at a concert in the Doğubayazıt district of Ağrı were detained on the grounds that they sang a song in Kurdish. The four were released after giving statements to the police on the same day.

Yeşim Tükel, a reporter for the Mezopotamya Agency (MA), is under investigation by the Istanbul Anatolia Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office for selling newspapers in Istanbul’s Kadıköy district in solidarity with the Atılım newspaper. It was learned that the journalist went to the Istanbul Provincial Police Department on June 3, 2025, to give a statement.

It has been learned that the Beyoğlu District Governor’s Office has banned a press statement to be made by the LGBTİ+ Commission of the Istanbul Branch of the Human Rights Association (İHD) on June 3, 2025, in Şişhane Square in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul as part of Pride Month.

The Beyoğlu District Governor’s Office announced on June 2, 2025, that all meetings, demonstrations, press statements, distribution of leaflets, sit-ins, and similar actions and events throughout the district have been banned for one day starting from June 3, 2025.

According to news reports on June 4, 2025, access to the website https://gidadedektifi.com/, which shares content related to food products, as well as three social media accounts and two platform applications belonging to Gıda Dedektifi, was blocked by a decision of the Istanbul Criminal Court of Peace No. 6 on May 29, 2025.
