It is learned from the news coverage of June 4, 2024, that 3 militants died in a clash between the Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in the Metina area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on April 8, 2024.
(06/026) Suspicious Police Death in Şırnak…
It is learned from the news coverage of June 3, 2024, that a police officer was found dead in a car in Yarbaşı (Hespist) village of İdil district of Şırnak. It is reported in the news that authorities claimed that the cause of death was suicide and an investigation was initiated.
(06/027) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment Under Custody…
It is learned that some of the women who organized a protest on May 31, 2024, and June 1, 2024, in front of the Istanbul office of a company that has commercial relations with Israel, under the name of ‘A Thousand Young People for Palestine’ and who were detained in house raids on June 2, 2024, were subjected to strip searches under custody.
(06/028) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Mardin…
It is learned that Ramazan Kalkan who was detained in a house raid in Mardin on June 4, 2024, and his family members Davut Kalkan, Agit Kalkan and Emine Kalkan were subjected to torture and ill-treatment by the police during the house raid and were injured due to physical violence. It is also learned from the news reports that family members got a medical report documenting the physical violence and will make a criminal complaint.
In his statements to the press about the torture and ill-treatment they were subjected to, Davut Kalkan said the following: “If there is a search warrant, we don’t say anything. But I don’t accept their brutal behavior. I don’t accept being forced to the ground, I don’t give them that right. They forced us to the ground and broke the nose of one of my sons. They squeezed my throat even though I said my throat hurt…”.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 4, 2024, that Rezzan Şengül, who is kept in Kırşehir High-Security Prison, has been on a hunger strike since March 27, 2024, demanding transfer. It is reported that Rezzan Şengül was not given enough water, sugar and vitamin B1 by the prison administration.
(06/030) Police Interventions Against Protests Against the Trustee Decision…
On June 3, 2024, 5 people including 1 child were detained in the police intervention against the press statement held in Van on June 3, 2024, against the Ministry of Interior’s decision to appoint Hakkari Governor Ali Çelik as trustee in place of Mehmet Sıddık Akış, who was elected as Hakkari co-mayor in March 31 local elections. Detained people were released on the same day after police procedures. The detainees whose names could be learned are as follows: Gülcan Bal, Lorin Aryen Turgut, Bahoz Gezici, A. A. (14).
The police intervened in the protest against the same decision on June 3, 2024, at Şişhane Square in Istanbul and detained 6 people including Lawyers for Freedom Association (ÖHD) member lawyer Azad Gürbüz, by torture and ill-treatment. 6 people were released the same day after the procedures at the police station.
It is learned that 1 person (Zeki Eren, a member of Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party)) was wounded during the police intervention against the press statement at İnönü Park in Adana on June 3, 2024. No one was detained during the intervention.
The police intervened against the people marching to Atatürk Park in Batman on June 3, 2024, to hold a press statement against the same decision and detained 3 people. The names of detained people could not be learned.
The police intervened against the group holding a press statement in front of Kızılay Business Center in Siirt on June 3, 2024, against the same decision, using tear gas and pressurized water, and detained 3 people. The names of detained people could not be learned.
The police intervened against the march on Diclekent Boulevard in Diyarbakır on June 3, 2024, against the same decision and detained 2 people. The names of detained people could not be learned.
The police intervened against the people marching from Bulvar Street in Hakkari to the DEM Party Hakkari Provincial Organization building on June 4, 2024, against the same decision, using tear gas and detained at least 2 people by using torture and ill-treatment. It is also reported in the news that 2 journalists were hospitalized as a result of the intervention.
(06/031) Police Intervention Against a Demonstration in Ankara…
It is learned that the police intervened against the members of the Prisoners’ Families Assistance and Solidarity Association (TAYAD) who had a sit-in protest in Yüksel Street in Ankara on June 3, 2024, demanding acceptance of demands of Nurettin Kaya, who has been on a death fast for 209 days in Bolu F Type Prison. 5 people were detained by torture and ill-treatment. Names of detained people are Busenur Öztürk, Rukiye Serçe, Ömer Akyel, Umut Garan and Kartal Bayraktar.

On June 4, 2024, 10 people were detained in house raids in the Artuklu and Kızıltepe districts of Mardin on the grounds of a denunciation against them. Detained people were released the same day after statement procedures at the police station. The detainees whose names are known are Serhat Akpınar, Baver Akpınar, Ramazan Kalkan, Çekdar Ermiş, Rubar Kaya.

1 of 10 people (Salih Özçelik) who were detained in house raids in Suruç district of Urfa on May 31, 2024 and referred to the Criminal Peace Judgeship on the same day, was arrested on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. 9 of them were released on judicial control conditions.

On June 3, 2024, 12 people were detained in house raids in Mersin on the allegations of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The names of the detainees could not be learned.

It is learned from the news coverage of June 3, 2024, that Merve Yeşilyurt and Öyküm Bozkurt, who were arrested after being detained for marching to Taksim during May 1 celebrations, are now released.
(06/036) Police Officer on Trial in Istanbul…
The first trial of the case against police chief Hanifi Zengin, on the charge of ‘simple injury’, for detaining Ekinsu Danış, advisor of Labour Party (EMEP) MP İskender Bayhan, with torture and ill-treatment during the 957th week protest of Saturday Mothers/People, started on June 4, 2024, at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 16. The court issued a compulsory appearance warrant for Hanifi Zengin and adjourned the trial to September 17, 2024.
(06/037) Investigation on Police Officers in Istanbul…
It is learned from the news coverage of June 3, 2024, that on the case of journalists Erdem Şahin, Fatoş Erdoğan, Bülent Kılıç, Kübra Köklü, Yasin Akgül, Emre Orman, Ozan Acıdere and Zeynep Kuray being subjected to torture and ill-treatment by the police officers during the Suruç Commemoration held in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on July 20, 2021, Istanbul Governorate’s decisions of not granting permission for an investigation, not requiring disciplinary proceedings against the police officers and suspending the case file are annulled by Istanbul Regional Administrative Court Administrative Case Chamber 1. Administrative Lawsuit Department of Istanbul Regional Administrative Court 1 lifted the decisions on the grounds that ‘criminal investigations on acts of beating, violence, torture, and ill-treatment are not subject to administrative permission’.

The Governorate of Şırnak announced on June 3, 2024, that all activities such as distribution of leaflets, stickers, brochures etc., hanging banners and posters etc. within the borders of the province and people who are considered to participate in these activities as well as entering and exiting Şırnak center and districts collectively are banned for 7 days from 00.01 on June 4, 2024 until 23.59 on June 10, 2024.
The Governorate of Batman announced on June 3, 2024, that all kinds of protests (gatherings, marches, vigils, demonstrations, press declarations, hunger strikes, sit-in protests, rallies, opening stands, setting up tents, distributing leaflets, hanging banners and posters etc.) and all persons and vehicles that are considered to participate in these protests are prohibited from entering Batman borders and entering Batman center from outer districts from 17.00 on June 3, 2024 until 23.59 on June 9, 2024, for 7 days in total.
The Governorate of Ağrı announced on June 3, 2024, that demonstrations, open-air meetings, closed-door meetings, press declarations, sit-ins and surveys, setting up/opening tents and stands, organizing petitions, distributing leaflets, brochures and flyers and all kinds of protest activities to be organized in accordance with the provisions of the Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations, and the entry and exit of individuals and groups who are considered to be able to participate in these activities into and out of the borders of Ağrı will be banned for 7 days from 00.01 on June 4, 2024 until 23.59 on June 10, 2024. 01 on June 4, 2024 until 23.59 on June 10, 2024.

The Governorate of Mardin announced on June 3, 2024, that all open-door events such as demonstrations, marches, press declarations, hunger strikes, sit-in protests, rallies, opening stands, setting up tents, distributing leaflets, hanging banners, etc. and all persons and vehicles that may participate in these events are banned from entering Mardin borders for 7 days from 08.00 on June 4, 2024 until 23.59 on June 10, 2024.
The Governorate of Bitlis announced on June 3, 2024, that the demonstration march to be held in Tatvan district in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations in relation to the Interior Ministry’s decision to appoint Hakkari Governor Ali Çelik as trustee in place of Mehmet Sıddık Akış, who was elected as Hakkari Co-Mayor in the March 31 local elections, and all activities such as Open-air gatherings, indoor gatherings, press statements, sit-ins and surveys, setting up/opening tents and stands, organizing petitions, distributing leaflets, brochures and flyers and all kinds of protest activities and the entry to and exit from Tatvan district of persons and groups who are considered to participate in these activities are banned for 7 days from 24.00 on June 3, 2024 until 23.59 on June 10, 2024. 00 on June 3, 2024 until 23.59 on June 10, 2024.
The Governorate of Tunceli announced on June 4, 2024, that all events such as press statements, meetings, demonstrations, rallies, open-door meetings, protests, sit-ins, commemorations, hunger strikes, opening stands, petitions, concerts, festivals, distributing flyers, leaflets, distributing leaflets, opening banners, posters, lighting and carrying torches, cinevision shows, etc. in public places such as squares, streets, streets, roads and parks within Tunceli borders are banned for 7 days from 00.01 on June 4, 2024 until 23.59 on June 10, 2024.
