(02/055) Suspicious Death of a Soldier in Tunceli…

Tunceli Governorate made a declaration on February 3, 2021 and announced that Enes Candan, a gendarmerie private on compulsory military service in Mazgirt district of Tunceli, lost his life after suiciding on February 1, 2021. The governorate’s office stated that both administrative and judicial investigation is initiated.

(02/056) Operations and Attacks…

1 soldier (Basri Demirel) who was wounded in an attack in Idlib area of Syria on January 31, 2021, died in hospital on February 3, 2021.

(02/057) Male Violence Monitoring Report for 2020…

According to “Male Violence Monitoring Report” of Bianet which was published on February 3, 2021, at least 22 women and 1 child were killed by men in January 2021. It is also reported that 9 women were raped, 28 women were forced to sex work, 60 women were subjected to violence, 12 children were abused and 9 women were sexually harassed/abused by men in January 2021.

(02/058) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 3, 2021 that, in Van T Type Prison, after the search in the ward where journalists Şehriban Abi and Nazan Şen are also kept in, blankets in the ward were seized without any reason by the officers.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 3, 2021 that, in Van High Security Prison, the letter of journalist Cemil Uğur addressing Evrensel daily newspaper was considered as improper because of expressions on journalist Metin Göktepe, who was killed by the police in 1996, and on torture and ill-treatment in prison; and that the letter was seized by prison administration.

(02/059) Police Interventions to Protests in Istanbul and Izmir…

On February 3, 2021, the police have intervened the press declaration held in front of Türkan Saylan Cultural Center in Izmir and detained 51 people including 2 lawyers (Erdoğan Akdoğdu and Tuğçe Nazlı Akın). The press declaration was organized by Izmir Solidarity for Universities and Izmir Labour and Democracy Forces, to protest the new rector appointed to Boğaziçi University and arrest of 2 students on January 30, 2021. 51 people who were detained are released after statement procedures at the police on the same day.

On February 2, 2021, 51 people were detained in protests in Istanbul, and they are released by the court provided that 39 of them will be on judicial control conditions, on February 4, 2021.

(02/060) Police Prevention to Protest About Hunger Strikes in Prison…

The police prevented the press declaration of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Diyarbakır on February 3, 2021; which was held to draw attention to indefinite hunger strikes that started on November 27, 2020 in prisons to demand an end to isolation of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan.

(02/061) Detained People for Social Media Posts in Istanbul…

On February 3, 2021, 8 people are detained on the grounds of social media posts about protests against the news rector appointed by the President to Boğaziçi University. The names of detained people are unknown.

(02/062) Detained People in Van…

7 of 10 people who were detained through a Van based investigation on January 28, 2021, are arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on February 3, 2021. 3 people are released on judicial control conditions. Arrested people are: Abdülkerim Alkan, Ayhan Koç, Kerem Atsak, Kasım Tekin, Faris Bal, Nedim Ataman and Emin Aykut.

(02/063) Özgür Gündem Case…

On July 17, 2019, Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13 have acquitted Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Turkey representative Erol Önderoğlu, writer Ahmet Nesin and Human Rights Foundation of Turkey executive board member and Turkish Medical Association (TTB) chair Professor Şebnem Korur Fincancı, who were on trial for participating in “Editors in Chief on Watch” campaign to support Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree. However, the Penal Department No 3 of Istanbul Regional Court has reversed the verdict and retrial of the case is held on February 3, 2021.

The court decided to ask the consent of Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 23 for consolidation of the case with the main case on Özgür Gündem newspaper, and to send notice for hearing of İnan Kızılkaya as a witness and adjourned the trial to May 6, 2021.

(02/064) Journalist on Trial in Ankara…

The trial of the case against journalist Alican Uludağ, for his social media posts about Yüksel Kocaman, former public prosecutor of Ankara, is held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 18 on February 3, 2021.

After defence hearings the court sentenced Alican Uludağ to 10 months on the charge of ‘targeting a public officer who took part in the fight against terrorism’.

(02/065) DBP Executive on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against Garip Kandemir, former Diyarbakır co-chair of Democratic Regions Party (DBP) is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 11 on February 3, 2021. The court sentenced Garip Kandemir to 6 years and 3 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

(02/066) Person on Trial for Social Media Posts in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against Hülya Oruç, spouse of arrested journalist Aziz Oruç, for her social media posts is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 on February 3, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence from 1 year up to 3 years for Hülya Oruç on the charge of ‘provoking hatred and hostility among public’.

After defence hearings the court acquitted Hülya Oruç.

(02/067) People on Trial in Ankara…

The first trial of the case against 12 people, students and alumni of Middle East Technical University, for the protests against dormitory construction of the Credit and Dormitories Agency in the forestland of the campus, is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No 46 on February 3, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for 12 people on the charges of ‘participating in unlawful meetings and demonstrations and resisting to warnings’, and ‘damage to public property’.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to May 25, 2021.

(02/068) Ban of Events in Antalya…

Antalya Governorate made a declaration on February 2, 2021 and announced that all events, regardless of being in accordance with rules about face masks, social distancing and hygiene, such as marches, sit-in protests, opening stands and tents, collecting petitions, human chains or tied up protests, distributing leaflets and stickers, hanging banners and so on are banned for 15 days as of February 3, 2021.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 3, 2021 that the article of Ismail Saymaz, “Despotic state virus”, which was published on https://www.sozcu.com.tr website is banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights, by Ankara Penal Court of Peace No 6, on December 17, 2020.

It is learned from the news coverage of February 3, 2021 that, https://gazete.alinteri1.org website of Alınteri newspaper is banned to access by Diyarbakır Penal Court of Peace No 3 on February 2, 2021.

(02/070) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 117 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 632 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on February 3, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 case is 8,102.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 26,354 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 2,501,079 as of February 3, 2021.

It is learned that Professor Yücel Tümer lost his life due to Covid-19 on February 3, 2021.
