The Ministry of National Defence (MND) announced on May 4, 2024, that 1 soldier (Ata Göçmen) who was injured due to a lightning strike during the “Pençe-Kilit” operation in Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), died in the hospital.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 4, 2024, that 1 person named Ömer Koç (18, m) died on the spot and 1 child named H. K. (15, m) was injured and taken to Dicle University Hospital due to an explosion of an object they found while grazing animals in rural areas of the Hani district of Diyarbakır on May 3, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 4, 2024, that 35 people who were detained in connection with the events of May 1 celebrations in Istanbul were subjected to physical violence by the police in the Narcotics Department after they objected to being kept in the same detention room with other people detained for judicial offenses; some people who were referred to hospital for medical check-ups were subjected to physical violence of the police in hospital and in the detention vehicle; 1 person (Özgür Cihan Uçar) was not allowed to have access to his regular medication and detained women were given plastic bags by the police to use as a toilet.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 4, 2024, that journalist Esra Solin Dal, one of 9 journalists who were detained through an investigation initiated in 2022, and who was arrested and sent to Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ on April 26, 2024, has been kept in a single room since her arrest.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 4, 2024, that Nurettin Kaya, a prisoner in Erzurum Dumlu Y Type Prison, has been on ‘death fast’ for 200 days in order to improve the conditions in Y Type prisons and to demand the transfer of Cemil Kurt and Alişan Gül, prisoners in the same prison.
It is reported in the news that prisoners Cemil Kurt and Alişan Gül are on indefinite hunger strike with the same demand.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 3, 2024, that the ‘Dersim 38 Wall’ in the Hozat district of Tunceli, which was built by the Hozat Municipality in 2012 and which had photographs and writings about the Dersim Genocide between 1937-1938, was intervened by the police with the decision of District Governorate and the photographs and writings were removed.

On May 5, 2024, the Ministry of Interior announced on social media that the number of people detained in house raids in Istanbul due to wanting to march from Saraçhane to Taksim Square on May 1, Labor Day has increased to 42.
38 of 65 people who were detained in Saraçhane Square during May 1 celebrations in Istanbul were arrested by the Criminal Peace Judgeship on May 5, 2024, on the charges of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’, ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ and ‘resisting to prevent the execution of duty’. 27 people were released on judicial control conditions on the same date.
(05/038) Journalists, Party Executives, and Others Detained in Diyarbakır…
On May 6, 2024, 8 people including journalists Nurcan Yalçın and Derya Us and Party Assembly (PM) members of Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) were detained in house raids in Diyarbakır through an investigation dated 2021, on the grounds of ‘depositing money to prisons’ and were taken to provincial security directorate. The names of the detainees are Derya Us, Nurcan Yalçın, Sema Koç, Fatma Opçin, Zuhal Ayaz, Muhammed Özer, Songül İpek and Dilan Polat Dirin. Dilan Polat Dirin was released on judicial control condition the same day after her statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office.

Simay Ada Kart, member of the Central Executive Committee (MYK) of the Federation of Socialist Youth Associations (SGDF), was detained in Eskişehir on May 5, 2024, on the allegations of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911’ for participating in a protest against the detention and arrest decisions taken during the May 1 celebrations.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 5, 2024, that the detention period of documentary filmmaker and cinematographer Koray Kesik, who was detained in a house raid in Izmir on May 2, 2024, was extended for 24 hours for the third time.

2 of 14 people (Nesibe Akan and Mahmut Yıldırım) who were detained on the allegations of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ during house raids in Bursa on May 2, 2024, were arrested by the Criminal Peace Judgeship on May 3, 2024, for the same reason and sent to prison, 12 of them (Muhammet Çelik, Elanur Tekin, Mehmet Emir, Sabiha Toktaş, Saliha Toktaş, Yusuf Yağız, Sadiye Çelik, Nurcan Apakan, Elif Karatekin, Mazlum Aymaz, Emine Borne and Yusuf Vural) were released on judicial control conditions by the criminal peace judgeship on the same date.

3 of 5 people (Mehmet Atabey, Metin Mendez and Ahmet Kaygusuz) who were detained in house raids in Şırnak on April 30, 2024, were arrested by the criminal peace judgeship on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ on May 4, 2024. 2 people (Yusuf Tatik and Hamit Ayan) were released on the same date after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office.

2 (E.G., E.Y.) of the 15 people, including 7 children, who were detained in house raids in Adana on April 30, 2024, were arrested on May 4, 2024 on the charges of ‘committing a crime on behalf of an illegal organization without being a member of the organization’ and ‘unauthorized possession or transfer of dangerous substances’. 13 people were released on judicial control conditions by Adana Criminal Peace Judgeship on the same date.

The dissolution case against Tarlabaşı Community Support Association (TTM), on the grounds of ‘unlawful and immoral activities’ of the association, was held at Istanbul Civil Court of First Instance No 18 on May 6, 2024. It is learned that the lawyer of the Ministry of Interior, who intervened in the case, claimed that TTM was carrying out unauthorized press and education activities and ‘making LGBTI+ propaganda’ and that the association should be dissolved. The court adjourned the trial to October 21, 2024.

The 2 years and 6 months imprisonment sentence given to former Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş, who has been imprisoned in Edirne F Type Prison since 2016, in the lawsuit filed at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 25 on the charge of ‘targeting people who took part in the fight against terrorism’ due to his words ‘he will be held accountable before the law’ about the then Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor, was overturned by Ankara Regional Court of Appeals Penal Department No 22. The Court of Appeal acquitted Selahattin Demirtaş on the grounds that the legal elements of the crime did not occur.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 6, 2024, that Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 accepted the indictment prepared by Diyarbakır Public Prosecutor’s Office against lawyer Necat Çiçek, executive board member of Lawyers’ Association for Freedom (ÖHD) Diyarbakır branch, on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ for the press statements he attended and for his clients. The first hearing of the case will be held on May 21, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 3, 2024, that Istanbul Küçükçekmece Criminal Peace Judgeship No 1 banned access to 245 news reports and 61 social media content related to former Justice and Development Party (AKP) MP Cuma İçten. It is learned that Küçükçekmece Criminal Peace Judgeship No 1 also banned access to 1 news report on https://haber.sol.org.tr related to police interventions against Israel protests at universities in the USA.

The Ministry of National Defence (MND) announced on May 5, 2024, that 4 people were detained while trying to illegally cross to Greece through the Edirne border crossing.
