(06/053) Racist Attack in Rize…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 4, 2022 that, an Afghan citizen, who came to the city for tea collecting work, lost his life as a result of an armed attack by a person named Gökhan Topal in Pazar district of Rize. It is reported that Gökhan Topal was detained and arrested.

It is learned that Gökhan Topal said the following in his statement: “I entered the house where the foreigners were staying. I asked the people in the house ‘Who are you?’, two people said we are Uzbek Turks. I said to them, ‘If you are Uzbek, why are you introducing yourself as an Afghan?’, I was relieved when I heard that they were Turkish too. Meanwhile, someone with a bag entered. I asked him and he said he was Afghan. Then my friend M. K. entered. I asked what they were doing here. Murat said they are my workers. I said pick your own tea by yourself. At that time, the Afghan gestured. I took the gun out of my waist. I lost consciousness under the influence of alcohol and opened fire after chasing the Afghan. I don’t know the person I opened fire on before. I did not have any personal problems with him before.”

It is learned from the news coverage of June 4, 2022, that 6 militants died in the clashes between the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) units and HPG militants in the Zap area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government between 23 and 25 May 2022.

(06/055) Hunger Strike in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 5, 2022, 8 prisoners (Rızgar Turhan, Cumali Yıldırım, Mehmet Emin Dal, İsmail Çevik, Cihat Oğraş, Fırat Beyazer, Velat Kazanççı and a prisoner whose name has not been learned) in Afyon T Type Prison No 1 who have been on hunger strike since May 25, 2022 demanding an end to the violations of their rights, were taken out of the wards where they were forcibly kept and put in solitary cells on May 26, 2022.

It is also reported in the news that 8 prisoners were not given their personal belongings.

(06/056) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on June 4, 2022 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by families and tutelary of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, and Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in Imralı Prison, in order to visit them was not responded.

(06/057) Interventions and Bans on Pride Month Events…

The police intervened in the press declaration made in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on June 5, 2022 as part of LGBTI+ Pride Month, and detained 11 people by using physical violence and handcuffing them behind their backs. It is learned that the detainees were injured in various parts of their bodies. 11 people were released on the same day.

The police intervened in the press declaration which was made by the Campus Witches to protest the obstructions and bans against women artists, in front of the Istanbul Governor’s Office on June 3, 2022 and detained 5 people. Detained people are released on the same day.

(05/059) Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened in the press declaration made by the dismissed EnerjiSa workers in front of the Sabancı Center in Beşiktaş district of Istanbul on May 31, 2022, and detained 29 people, including union representatives and those who came to support them, using physical violence. 24 of the detainees are released after statement procedures at the police and 5 of them are released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office.

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on June 3, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Ankara on June 3, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(06/062) Detained People in Ankara for Participating in the Revolution March at the METU…

16 people who have been detained in house raids in Ankara on May 29, 2022, for participating in the Revolution March at the Middle East Technical University on May 26, 2022; are released by the court on judicial control conditions on June 3, 2022.

Detained people are: The Socialist Youth Associations’ Federation (SGDF) central executive board member Hivda Selen, Free Students Initiative co-spokesperson Berivan Kaylu, Yaprak Delfin Turgan, Mert Orhan Ömerbeyoğlu, Dilan Mollaahmetoğlu, Berfin Babaoğlu, Lokman Sekvan Ozğan, Ebrar Uz, Cihat Uygar, Kıymet Cengiz, Dilan Yakın, Eda Kahraman, Ruken Gül, Mustafa Demir, Özgür Cıbul, Hakkı Zengin.

(06/063) Detained Co-Mayor, HDP Executives and Other People in Batman…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 31, 2022, 19 people, including Batman co-mayor Songül Korkmaz, Kozluk district co-mayor Nazime Avcı, Bekirhan town co-mayor Gülistan Sonük and HDP executives, were detained in house raids in Batman. 3 of them (Fatma Ablay, Şirvan Göçer, Leyla Bayram) are arrested by the court on June 3, 2022. 16 people are released, provided that 5 of them will be on judicial control conditions.

(06/064) Detained Human Rights Defender, Association Executives and Other People Through an Istanbul Based Investigation…

On June 3, 2022, 22 people, including Bilal Yıldız, the HRFT Istanbul branch’s social worker, have been detained in house raids in 5 cities through an Istanbul based investigation against the Migration Monitoring Association (GÖÇİZ-DER). The detention period for 22 people is extended for 4 days on June 6, 2022.

(06/065) The Case Against Former Co-mayor and Former DBP Co-chair…

Malatya Heavy Penal Court No 5 has sentenced Gültan Kışanak, former co-mayor of Diyarbakır, to 14 years and 3 months; and Sebahat Tuncel, former co-chair of Democratic Regions Party (DBP), to 15 years; and Penal Department No 18 of Antep Regional Court has reversed the verdict. On July 2, 2021, the local court has decided to consolidate this case with the Kobanê case at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 22. The dispute that arose between the two courts after the consolidation decision was resolved by the Penal Department No 5 of the Court of Cassation which decided to consolidate the case file with the Kobanê Case in terms of the ‘being an illegal organisation member’ charges, and lifted the consolidation decision in terms of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

The trial of the case is held at Malatya Heavy Penal Court No 5 on June 3, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to September 9, 2022.

(06/066) City Council Member on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Bahar Karakaş, a city council member from HDP in Eğil district, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 10 on June 3, 2022. The court decided to release Bahar Karakaş Uluğ from prison and adjourned the trial to October 25, 2022.

Bahar Karakaş was dismissed from her post on June 15, 2021 by the Ministry of Interior. She was detained in Diyarbakır on April 5, 2021 and was arrested on April 12, 2021.

(06/067) Journalist and Political Party Executives on Trial in Ağrı…

The trial of the case against 5 people, including journalist Aziz Oruç and HDP Doğubayazıt district co-chair Abdullah Ekelek, is held at Ağrı Heavy Penal Court No 2 on June 3, 2022. The court adjourned the trial to September 28, 2022.

Aziz Oruç and Abdullah Ekelek were detained on December 11, 2019, on Ağrı-Doğubayazıt roadway, while İkram Müftüoğlu was detained on the same day in a house raid. Abdullah Ekelek and İkram Müftüoğlu were arrested on December 13, 2019; Aziz Oruç was arrested on December 18, 2019. Abdullah Ekelek and İkram Müftüoğlu were released at the first trial held on July 21, 2020, and Aziz Oruç was released on November 9, 2020.

(06/068) Journalist on Trial in Batman…

The trial of the case against 35 people, including Dicle News Agency (DİHA) reporter Engin Eren, which was closed down with a state of emergency decree, regarding the tent protest made by various non-governmental organizations and political parties to stop a military operation in Batman in 2015, is held at Batman Heavy Penal Court No 2 on June 3, 2022.

The court decided to separate the files of the 3 people who have not made their official statements yet. The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence for 29 people including journalist Engin Eren on the charges of ‘committing a crime on behalf of an illegal organization’, ‘resisting to prevent official duty’, ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’  and ‘violating the Law on Military Forbidden Zones’ and demanded sentence for 2 people on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court adjourned the trial to October 14, 2022.

(06/069) Person on Trial for Insulting the President in Denizli…

The final trial of the case against a person named M. B. T. on the grounds of ‘insulting the President’ on social media, is held at Denizli Penal Court of First Instance No 17 on June 3, 2022. The court sentenced M. B. T. to 11 months and 20 days.

(06/070) Banned Theatre Play in Adana…

It is learned from the news coverage of June 4, 2022, that Moliere’s play Tartuffe, which was to be staged in Kurdish on June 6, 2022 at Adana Metropolitan Municipality Theatre Hall, was banned by the Adana Governorate’s Office on the grounds of being considered as “inappropriate”.

It is learned that the news about the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Turkish Airlines, published on the websites https://www.birgun.net, https://www.yenicaggazetesi.com.tr, https://www.airporthaber.com are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of Peace No 6 on June 3, 2022.

It is learned that the news about the judge Akın Gürlek, who was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Justice, published on the websites https://www.birgun.net and https://www.dokuz8haber.net are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Manisa Penal Court of Peace No 2 on June 3, 2022.

It is learned that two articles of journalist Hasan Cemal published on https://t24.com.tr and a news report published on https://www.cumhuriyet.com.tr website, are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of Peace No 6 on June 3, 2022.

It is learned that the news about the Environment Agency Presidency published on the websites https://www.birgun.net, https://www.diken.com.tr, https://www.evrensel.net are banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of Peace No 6 on June 3, 2022.

(06/072) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

9 of 38 people who were detained through an Ankara based investigation on May 27, 2022, are arrested by the court on June 4, 2022. 21 people are released on judicial control conditions and 8 people are released on house confinement.

3 of 5 people who were detained in Edirne in an alleged attempt to illegally flee to Greece, are arrested by the court on June 5, 2022. 2 people are released on judicial control conditions.
