(03/263) Operations and Attacks…

It is learned from the news coverage of March 30, 2023 that, 3 militants died in a clash between security forces and HPG militants in the rural areas of Nusaybin district of Mardin on March 11, 2023.

(03/264) Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Urfa…

It is learned that 9 people who were detained by the gendarmerie intervening in the protest about the solar panels to be built in Kadıköy rural neighbourhood of Viranşehir district of Urfa on March 29, 2023, were subjected to torture and ill-treatment at Demirci Gendarmerie Station.

The names of people subjected to torture under custody learned so far are: Sıddık Ayyıldız, Emin Ayyıldız, İsmail Taşkın, Nedim Taşkın, Mehmet Taşkın, Aydın Taşkın and Naif Taşkın.

It is learned that the appeal made on March 30, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

It is learned from the news coverage that, the number of contractors who were arrested for their responsibility in the buildings collapsed in Antep and Maraş earthquakes is 325 as of March 31, 2023.

(03/267) Detained People in Antalya…

It is learned that 10 people were detained in house raids in Antalya, through the investigation on the Newroz celebration held in the city, on March 30, 2023. Detained people were released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office on the same day.

It is learned from the news coverage of March 30, 2023 that, in Malatya Akçadağ T Type Prison the food given to prisoners on the last 10 days was inadequate.

(03/269) Detained People in Izmir…

On March 31, 2023, 11 people (G. S., H. Ç., S. M., C. M., E. G., U. N., R. K., C. Ç., E. K., E. A. and E. G.) were detained in house raids in Izmir, on the grounds of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’ by the slogans chanted and yellow-red-green scarfs wore at Newroz celebration.

(03/270) Human Rights Defenders, Union and Association Executives on Trial in Van…

The trial of the case against 8 people including the Health and Social Service Employees’ Union (SES) branch co-chairs Figen Çolakoğlu and Zeki Seven and HRFT physician and Van-Hakkari Medical Chamber secretary Ayfer Bostan, HRFT physician and Van-Hakkari Medical Chamber chair Hüseyin Yaviç, who were detained by the police intervening in the press declaration held on February 8, 2022 in front of Van Research and Training Hospital on February 8, 2022, as a part of one-day-strike of health employees organized by the Turkish Medical Association, is held at Van Penal Court of First Instance No. 1 on March 31, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for 8 people on the charge of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to September 15, 2023.

(03/271) Journalist on Trial in Ankara…

The trial of the case against journalist Sibel Hürtaş who was subjected to torture and ill-treatment of the police and was detained as she was reporting on the protests against the law proposal regarding bar associations in Ankara, is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No. 37 on March 30, 2023. The case was opened upon the complaint of the police officers, on the charge of ‘resisting to the police’. A police officer was heard as witness at the trial and the court adjourned the trial to September 26, 2023.

(03/272) Investigation Against Journalist in Van…

It is learned that Van Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against journalist Ruşen Takva, over his social media posts about the Free Cause Party (HÜDAPAR) joining in the People’s Alliance for the elections; and that Ruşen Takva made his official statement to the police on March 30, 2023.

(03/273) HDP Executive on Trial in Izmir…

The first trial of the case against the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Izmir provincial executive Murat Tufan is held at Izmir Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on MArch 30, 2023. After defence hearings the court decided to acquit and release Murat Tufan, who was detained in Izmir on February 6, 2023 and was arrested by the court on February 7, 2023.

(03/274) Vartinis Massacre Case…

The retrial of the case against former gendarmerie lieutenant Bülent Karaoğlu, for death of 9 members of Öğüt family including 7 children, in their house that was burned down by soldiers on May 17, 1993 in Altınova (Vartinis) town of Korkut district in Muş; is held at Kırıkkale Heavy Penal Court No. 1 on March 30, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to May 2, 2023.

The final trial of the case was held on March 1, 2016; and the local court has acquitted all 4 defendants (Hasköy Gendarmerie Commander lieutenant Bülent Karaoğlu, Hasköy District Company Commander Lieutenant Hanifi Akyıldız, Gökyazı Gendarmerie Commander master sergeant Turhan Nurdoğan and Muş Security Directorate Special Task Department chief police Şerafettin Us). On January 26, 2021, the Penal Department No. 1 of the Court of Cassation has approved the acquittal for 3 defendants but reversed the local court’s verdict regarding Bülent Karaoğlu, who was the commander of Hasköy Gendarmerie Station back then.

(03/275) May 14, 2023 General Elections…

On March 31, 2023, an armoured attack was carried on by anonymous person or persons on the IYI Party Istanbul provincial office. It is learned that nobody was injured in the attack and a window of the office was hit by a bullet.

23 people including the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) and HDP Suruç district co-chairs who were detained through an Urfa based investigation on March 27, 2023, are arrested by the court on the charges of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ and ‘providing finance for an illegal organisation’ on MArch 31, 2023. The names of arrested people learned so far are: Hülya Demir, HDP district co-chair Yaşar Gündüzalp, DBP district co-chair Rojda Binici, Mehmet Akif Yıldız, Zeki Bali, Asiye Fırat, Maide Kurttekin, Nermin Çakır, Osman Akgün, Sabri Kaya, Bülent Koçyiğit, Feryal Çelikbaş, Salih Kaplan, Ergün Akaslan, Bülent Koçyiğit, Avni Gökkan, İsmet Bali, Mustafa Bali.

(03/276) Ban of Events in Siirt…

Siirt Governorate’s Office made a statement on March 31, 2023 and announced that open-door meetings, demonstrations, crowded greetings, press declarations outside of offices, sit-in protests, assemblies, opening tents and stands, collecting petitions, commemorations, crowded funerals, festivals, concerts, plays, any kind of audio-visual activities with broadcasting appliances, distributing leaflets, hanging banners and so on are banned for 10 days as of March 31, 2023.
