(01/239) Person Subjected to Violence by Customs Officials in Şırnak…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 31, 2023, that a woman was subjected to physical violence by customs guards at the Habur Border Gate in Silopi district of Şırnak. Şırnak Governorate’s Office announced that two customs guards were suspended and an investigation was launched.

(01/240) Journalist on Trial in Bitlis…

The indictment prepared by Bitlis Tatvan Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against Bitlis Journalists’ Association chair Sinan Aygül, on the grounds of a news report was accepted by the Tatvan Penal Court of First Instance No. 1 on January 31, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Sinan Aygül on the charge of “publicly disseminating misleading information to the public”. The first trial of the case will be held on February 28, 2023. It is stated in the news reports that Sinan Aygül was the first person to be prosecuted for this charge, which is subject to a prison sentence of 1 to 3 years, in accordance with the amendment made in the Press Law.

The first trial of the case against Jinnews reporter Rozerin Gültekin who was detained in Bursa on June 12, 2022 as she was reporting, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 58 on January 31, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Rozerin Gültekin on the charge of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’. Rozerin Gültekin attended the trial and made defence declaration. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial.

The indictment prepared by Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office against Karşı Mahalle news portal reporter Sezgin Kartal is was accepted by Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 22 on January 31, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Sezgin Kartal on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The first trial of the case will be held on April 4, 2023. Sezgin Kartal was detained on January 10, 2023 and was arrested on January 13, 2023.

The trial of the case against 14 people for participating in the protests against the rector appointed to Boğaziçi University by the President, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 22 on January 30, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for 14 people on the charges of ‘participating in unlawful meetings unarmed and not dispersing despite of warning’, ‘deprivation of liberty due to public duty’, ‘resisting to prevent an official from their duty’ and ‘hijacking or seizure of transport vehicles’. The court adjourned the trial to February 3, 2023.

The final trial of the case against 21 people, on the grounds of slogans chanted at the commemoration event held in Bursa in 2015 for those who lost their lives in October 10-Ankara Massacre, is held at Bursa Penal Court of First Instance on January 30, 2023. The court sentenced 21 people to jail sentences ranging from 11 months to 1 year and 2 months on the charge of ‘insulting the President’.

The trial of the case against 15 people, who were detained by the police intervening in the commemoration event held in Van on October 10, 2018, for those who lost their lives in October 10-Ankara Massacre, is held at Van Penal Court of First Instance No. 7 on January 27, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for 15 people on the charge of resisting to prevent public duty’. The court adjourned the trial to April 13, 2023.

(01/246) TJA Spokesperson on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Ayşe Gökkan, the Spokesperson of the Free Women’s Movement (TJA) is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 9 on January 30, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Ayşe Gökkan on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’. The court adjourned the trial to January 30, 2023. Ayşe Gökkan attended the trial and it is learned that she stated “Given what happened in this court, I refuse make defence in this court”. The court adjourned the trial to February 22, 2023.

(01/247) Documentary Director on Trial in Ankara…

On January 30, 2023, in the detention examination of the case at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 16 against documentary director Sibel Tekin, who was detained in Ankara on December 16, 2022 and arrested by the court on December 17, 2022, and the court ruled to release Sibel Tekin with a ban on leaving the country and on judicial control conditions. The first trial of the case will be held on February 23, 2023.

(01/248) Investigation Against Women in Urfa…

It is learned that an investigation was launched against 17 women for to the march to be held in Viranşehir district of Urfa as part of the 25 November International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and that 15 people gave their statements at the Urfa Provincial Security Directorate on January 31, 2023.

(01/249) Erhan Eser Case…

The first trial of the case against police officer H. K., regarding death of Erhan Eser as a result of police fire on a vehicle on the grounds of ‘disobeying stop warning’ in Beylikdüzü district of Istanbul on March 28, 2022, is held at Istanbul Bakırköy Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on January 30, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for police officer H. K. on the charge of ‘killing with probable intent’. The defendant police officer attended the trial and made defence. After witness hearings the court rejected to arrest the police officer and adjourned the trial to April 26, 2023.

(01/250) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

It is learned that 27 people were detained in operations covering 32 cities through an Ankara based investigation and 10 people were detained in Istanbul on January 31, 2023.
