(05/224) Police Intervention at a Commemoration in Istanbul…

On May 28, 2025, following a commemoration event at Istanbul University’s Technical Campus related to the 2013 Gezi Park protests, police arrested 23 people at a tram stop, handcuffing them behind their backs. It was reported that one person was released the same day after giving a statement to the police, while 22 others were released on May 30, 2025, by a magistrate’s court with a judical control conditions including a travel ban and regular reporting to the authorities.

(05/225) Trial of a Journalist in Istanbul…

The final hearing of the trial against journalist Pınar Gayıp, who was charged based on her reports about a lawyer named Sezgin Keleş, was held on May 29, 2025, at the Istanbul Anatolia Criminal Court of First Instance No. 66.  The court ruled that the journalist should be fined 23,300 TL for the offense of “insult.”

(05/226) Trial of a Journalist in Diyarbakır…

The final hearing of the case against journalist Yelda Çiçek, who was detained on August 21, 2019, while covering news in Diyarbakır, was held on May 29, 2025, at the Diyarbakır Criminal Court of First Instance No. 4. The court acquitted the journalist of the charge of “violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911.”

(05/227) Trial of Bar Association Executive in Istanbul…

The trial of Istanbul Bar Association Board Member Attorney Fırat Epözdemir, who was charged with “membership in an organization,” began on May 29, 2025, at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 24. The indictment seeks punishment for Fırat Epözdemir on the charge of “membership in an organization.” The court decided to release Fırat Epözdemir on condition that he not leave the country and postponed the hearing to September 9, 2025.

Lawyer Fırat Epözdemir was detained on January 23, 2025, and arrested on January 25, 2025.

(05/228) Persons on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of 16 individuals, 14 of whom are in custody, began on May 30, 2025, at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance No. 40 on charges related to slogans chanted and banners carried during protests against the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. The indictment seeks the punishment of 16 individuals for “insulting the President.” The court ordered the release of 14 individuals and postponed the hearing to a later date.

14 individuals were arrested on March 26, 2025.

The trial of lawyer Adile Salman at the Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 5 continued on May 29, 2025. The indictment seeks the punishment of the lawyer for “membership in an organization.” The court decided to continue the judicial control conditions against Adile Salman and postponed the hearing to October 9, 2025.

The trial of lawyer Necat Çiçek, a member of the Executive Board of the Diyarbakır Branch of the Lawyers for Freedom Association (ÖHD), continued on May 29, 2025, at the Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 5.

The indictment seeks the lawyer’s punishment for “membership in an organization.” The court decided to continue the judicial control of Necat Çiçek and postponed the hearing to September 9, 2025.

The final hearing of the case against five individuals, who were charged based on certain banners displayed during a protest against the murder of two women by a person named Semih Çelik, was held on May 29, 2025, at the Istanbul Anatolia Criminal Court of First Instance No. 24. The court acquitted the five individuals of the charge of “insulting the President.”

The trial of Specialist Corporal M.O. in connection with the death of İpek Er began on May 29, 2025, at the Batman Criminal Court of First Instance No. 1. The indictment seeks the punishment of Specialist Corporal M.O. for the crime of “inciting another person to commit suicide.” The court rejected the request for M.O.’s arrest and postponed the hearing to October 16, 2025.

(05/233) Internet Contents Subject to Access Restrictions

According to news reports on May 29, 2025, a total of 454 videos of songs by the group Grup Yorum were blocked on YouTube on the grounds of national security and public order, and the videos were made invisible in Turkey.

According to news reports on May 29, 2025, access to the YouTube accounts of five journalists (Günay Aslan, Amed Dicle, Erdal Er, Fehim Işık, and Cahit Mervan) was restricted on the grounds of national security and public order, and the accounts were made invisible in Turkey.

According to news reports published on May 29, 2025, the YouTube account belonging to the documentary channel Mind Vortex was blocked on the grounds of national security and public order, and the account was made invisible in Turkey.

According to news reports on May 29, 2025, the YouTube account belonging to the publisher Jahrein has been blocked and made invisible in Turkey.

(05/234) TV channels fined by RTÜK…

According to news reports on May 29, 2025, the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) imposed administrative fines on Halk TV channel twice for statements made in the program “Gökmen Karadağ ile Açıkça” targeting a construction company, and once on Tele1 channel for statements made in the program “Sabah Pusulası.”
