(05/297) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 30, 2024, that, 5 prisoners (Hakim Aydemir to Konya Ereğli High-Security Prison; Mehmet Akkoyun, Rıdvan Özer, and Doğan Kahraman to Kırşehir High-Security Prison; Naim Çiftçi to Kırşehir S Type Prison) in Mersin Tarsus T Type Prison No 1 and T Type Prison No 2 were transferred to different prisons against their will within the last 10 days.

(05/298) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan not Responded to…

It is learned that the appeal made on May 30, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded.

(05/299) People Arrested in Relation with the May 1 Celebrations…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 30, 2024, that 3 people including 1 journalist (Revolutionary Youth Associations member Batuhan Yanar, HALK-DER member Öyküm Bozbay and Gazete Patika reporter Ali Kadir Güler) who were detained and arrested in house raids on May 21, 2024, on the grounds of wanting to march to Taksim during May 1 celebrations, were released.

(05/300) Former City Councillor on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final hearing of the retrial of the case against former Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Council member Şehriban Zuğurli, who was sentenced to 7 years 9 months and 22 days in total on the charges of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and ‘resisting to prevent duty’ by Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 10, was held on May 28, 2024. The court acquitted Şehriban Zuğurli on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and sentenced her to 8 months imprisonment on the charge of ‘resisting to prevent duty’ and deferred the announcement of the verdict.

(05/301) The Case of Yusuf Akın…

The retrial of the case against soldiers K. E. O., S. T., B. Y., Y. E. K. and D. G. in connection with the death of Yusuf Akın and injury of Mehmet Eren on December 20, 2011, during military operations in the Nusaybin district of Mardin, continued on May 30, 2024. The court adjourned the trial to October 15, 2024.

(05/302) The Case of Özgür Gündem…

The retrial of the case against Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Turkey Representative Erol Önderoğlu, writer Ahmet Nesin and Turkish Medical Association (TTB) Central Council Chair and HRFT Executive Board member Prof. Dr. Şebnem Korur Fincancı, for participating in the “Editor-in-Chief on Watch” campaign to support Özgür Gündem newspaper which was closed down by a state of emergency decree, was held on May 29, 2024. The indictment demands a sentence for 3 people on the charges of ‘inciting to commit a crime’, ‘praising crime and offender’ and ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. The court adjourned the trial to October 15, 2024.

(05/303) People on Trial in Hakkari…

The trial of the case against 15 people including members and executives of political parties and associations, continued on May 29, 2024, at Hakkari Heavy Penal Court No 1. The prosecutor declared the final opinion on the case and demanded a sentence for 15 people on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court adjourned the trial to June 5, 2024.

(05/304) People on Trial for the Killing of a Refugee Mine Worker in Zonguldak…

The trial of the case against 6 people including mine owners, relatives and 2 employees for the death of Vezir Mohammad Nourtani on November 9, 2023, when he was seriously injured in a work accident at an illegal mine in Zonguldak, which was closed down by the gendarmerie on November 5, 2023, and then the body was cremated, started on May 29, 2024, at Zonguldak Heavy Penal Court No 1. The indictment demands 6 people be sentenced for ‘intentional killing with participation’. The court decided to continue the detention of the arrested defendants and adjourned the hearing to July 8, 2024.

(05/305) Person on Trial due to Social Media Posts in Urfa…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 30, 2024, that Urfa Heavy Penal Court No 2 accepted the indictment prepared by the Urfa Public Prosecutor’s Office against M. Ö., a school principal at a primary school in Urfa, for a social media post on the Roboski Massacre. The indictment demands a sentence for M. Ö. on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’. The first hearing of the case will be held on September 18, 2024.

(05/306) Indictments Against People Who Were Arrested on the grounds of May 1 Celebrations…

It is learned from the news coverage of May 29, 2024, that the Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office prepared 2 separate indictments against 42 people who were arrested after being detained for marching to Taksim for May 1 celebrations and the indictments were sent to Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance. It is reported that one of the indictments is for 30 people and the other one is for 12 people.  Both indictments demand a sentence for 42 people on the charges of ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’, ‘resisting to prevent the execution of duty’, ‘intentional injury’ and ‘damaging public property’.

(05/307) The Constitutional Court Decision on the Deferment of a Verdict in the Trial of a Journalist…

On May 29, 2024, the Constitutional Court (AYM) evaluated the application of journalist Sultan Eylem Keleş to the Izmir Penal Court of First Instance No 2 regarding the decision to defer the announcement of the verdict (HAGB) in the case filed against her due to ‘insulting the President’ and ruled that the decision to defer the announcement of the verdict (HAGB) was a violation of the right to a fair trial.

(05/308) People Detained and Arrested in Relation with the Coup Attempt…

The Ministry of Interior announced on May 30, 2024, that 90 people were detained in operations conducted in 17 provinces in the last 4 days.
