(05/277) Police Violence in Batman…

It is learned that a person named Emin Anlayıcı is detained by police using violence in Kültür neighbourhood of Batman on May 29, 2018. It is reported that Anlayıcı was detained on the grounds that he did not yield the right of way to a vehicle of undercover police in front of HDP’s election campaign office. It is also stated that, the police fire the gun up in the air to fend off people who protest detention of Emin Anlayıcı by using violence, and that a police officer yelled to people as “I am the state you will respect me”.

(05/278) Operations and Attacks in Southeast…

It is learned that 1 soldier died in a clash during the military operation of Turkish Armed Forces in Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on May 29, 2018.

It is learned from news coverage of May 29, 2018 that 2 HPG militants died in a clash in rural areas of Şemdinli district of Hakkari on May 26, 2018.

(05/279) Rejection to Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan…

It is learned that the appeal made on May 29, 2018 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit their client was rejected the same day on the grounds of limitations for prisoners in accordance with the law on the execution of sentences and security measures (law no 5275). With the last rejection, it was the 759th time that appeals for visiting Öcalan have been rejected so far. Abdullah Öcalan has met his lawyers on July 27, 2011 for the last time.

(05/280) Police Intervention Against “I Want My Job Back” Protest in Ankara…

The police intervened the press declaration of public labourers who had been dismissed by a state of emergency decree and have been struggling for a while to regain their jobs, intended to be held in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on May 29, 2018 at 13.30 and 18.00.

It was reported that during police intervention against the press declaration which was planned to be held at 13.30 on May 29, 2018, 2 people (Nazan Bozkurt and Mahmut Konuk) and at 18.00 3 people (Nazan Bozkurt and 2 more people) were detained.

Thus in total 5 people were detained due to press declaration intended to be held in Yüksel Street on May 29, 2018. It is learned that detainees were released the same day.

(05/281) Suruç Massacre Case…

The case of Suruç Massacre which happened in Suruç district of Urfa on July 20, 2015 and caused death of 33 people, on Urfa Heavy Penal Court No 5 is held on May 29, 2018. After complainant declarations and defence hearings the court rejected the demand for holding the trials in courthouse instead of the courtroom in Urfa T Type Prison Compound. The court also decided to continue detention for Yakup Şahin, the only arrested defendant of the case, and adjourned the trial to August 28, 2018.

(05/282) Police Officer on Trial in Diyarbakır…

Şahin Öner has died in Diyarbakır, on February 20, 2018, due to being hit by a police armoured vehicle during demonstrations to protest Abdullah Öcalan’s being taken to Turkey. The case against police officer S. K., driver of the armoured vehicle, on Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 1, for ‘wilful murder’, is held on May 29, 2018. The defendant police officer attended the trial via sound and vision system. A witness told as following: “There were 5 or 6 meters between the person died and panzer. The person was standing in the middle of the street, and when he put his hands up, the panzer got over him and dragged him. A second panzer arrived there. They hold him up at hands and legs, took him in the car and left”. The court adjourned the trial to September 18, 2018.

(05/283) People on Trial for “Bakur” Documentary…

The case against journalist Ertuğrul Mavioğlu and director Çayan Demirel, for the documentary “Bakur” (The North), on Batman Heavy Penal Court No 2 is held on May 29, 2018. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to October 23, 2018.

(05/284) Journalist on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against journalist Hayri Demir, for his social media posts, on Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 5 is held on May 29, 2018. Hayri Demir and his lawyers did not attend the trial on valid excuse. The court declared the verdict although lawyers did not complete the defence; and sentenced Hayri Demir to 1 year 6 months and 22 days and deferred the announcement of verdict.

(05/285) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On May 29, 2018, 20 people are detained in operations covering 16 cities through a Kayseri based investigation; and 35 military personnel including 33 members on active duty in operations covering 20 cities through a Şırnak based investigation.

İbrahim Halil Şıvgan, sub-governor of Araklı district of Trabzon, who was detained on May 22, 2018 through a Samsun based investigation, is arrested by the court on May 29, 2018 in Samsun.

(05/286) Trials in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

The final trial of the case against Ahmet Şimşek, brigadier commander of Siirt Commando Brigade No 3 and other people, on the grounds that they attempted to blockade Siirt Governorate during July 15 coup attempt, on Siirt Heavy Penal Court No 2 is held on May 29, 2018. The court sentenced 6 defendants to heavy life penalty and 5 defendants to life penalty for ‘violating the constitution’. The court sentenced 70 defendants to jail penalties differing from 12 years and 6 months to 15 years.

The final trial of the case against 118 people including 34 arrestees on Bolu Heavy Penal Court is held on May 29, 2018. The court sentenced 79 defendants to jail penalties differing from 1 year and 10 months to 10 years 7 months and 15 days for ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court acquitted 37 defendants, dismissed the case for 1 defendant who died and separated the case of 1 defendant.

The final trial of the case against İlyas Gün, former sub-governor of Terme district, on Samsun Heavy PEnal Court No 4 is held on May 29, 2018. The court sentenced İlyas Gün to 6 years and 3 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

The final trial of the case against 5 defendants on Malatya Heavy Penal Court No 2 is held on May 29, 2018. The court sentenced 3 defendants to jail penalties differing from 4 years 4 months and 15 days to 7 years and 6 months for ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court sentenced 2 defendants to 2 years and 1 month each for ‘aiding an illegal organisation’.

(05/287) Elections on June 24, 2018…

It is learned from news coverage of May 29, 2018 that, the police wanted to prevent opening of an election campaign office by HDP in Hınıs district of Erzurum. It is reported that the office was opened after a short while.

It is learned that Muzaffer Karakaş (29) who was detained in İzmir during a criminal record check on May 28, 2018, on the grounds that he has posts about Selahattin Demirtaş, HDP’s candidate for Presidency and about Lice massacre in 1993; is released by the court on juridical control conditions on May 29, 2018.

It is learned from news coverage of May 29, 2018 that, 2 members of Labour Party (EMEP), who were distributing leaflets in Derince district of Kocaeli, are detained by the police and are taken to district police headquarters. It is reported that 2 people are released on punitive fine of 259 Turkish Liras according to Law of Misdemeanour.

It is learned from news coverage of May 29, 2018 that the police prevented HDP members to open a campaign stand in Dabbaoğlu Park in Van, by blocking the area with barriers.

It is learned from news coverage of May 29, 2018 that HDP was not invited to the meeting organized by Hatay Governorate on security of elections.

(05/288) Supreme Electoral Council Cancelled Mayor’s Certification of Election…

It is learned that, Supreme Electoral Council cancelled certification of election of Beyaz Kaplan, mayor of Çınar district of Diyarbakır, on the grounds of not being eligible. Beyaz Kaplan was elected as mayor on April 27, 2018, replacing the former mayor who has been dismissed by the Ministry of Interior.
