3 November 2020 Daily Human Rights Report

(11/024) Earthquake in Izmir…

It is learned that as of November 3, 2020, 102 people have lost their lives and 1026 people have been wounded in the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that hit Izmir on October 30, 2020.

(11/025) Police Intervention to Workers’ Protest in Istanbul…

The police intervened the press declaration of Bimeks workers at Boğaziçi University campus on November 2, 2020 and detained 7 people by using physical violence. Bimeks workers who were dismissed without being paid wages and compensation, wanted to protest Vedat Akgiray, owner of the company, who also lectures at the university.

Detained 7 people were released on the same day however they were detained once again, by the police intervening to their press declaration for the second time.

(11/026) Detained Grup Yorum Band Members and Other People Through an Istanbul Based Investigation…

99 people were detained in house raids in 12 cities through an Istanbul based investigation on October 28 and 29, 2020. Grup Yorum band members Ali Aracı, Seher Adıgüzel, Barış Yüksel, Eren Erdem and Özgürcan Elbiz; People’s Law Office lawyer Seda Şaraldı; Merve Demirel and Bengisu Demirel from “I Want My Job Back” protests in Yüksel Street of Ankara; Selvi Polat from “I Want My Job Back” protests in Bakırköy district of Istanbul; Türkan Albayrak who had sit-in protests for 2 years to get back her job in Sarıyer district of Istanbul; Ümit Özçelik who were having press declarations in Hatay for her mother Edibe Özçelik who lost her life in a house raid were among the detainees. 30 of 99 people are referred to the court on November 2, 2020. It is learned that 16 people (Merve Demirel, Özgürcan Elbiz, Mayıs Kurt, Umutcan Aybak, Eray Küçükkılavuz, Taylan Cemal Sungur, İpek Arslan, Sinan Okur, Seda Uçar, Yusuf Arslan, Mahmut Nehir, Elvan Altınarı, Ufuk Özçelik, Filiz Özçelik, Şerif Latifeci, Ahmet Sinan Yanbal) were released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office; 4 people (Bengisu Ravza Demirel, Gamze Aktaş, Mehmet Ali Uğurlu, Ferdaniye Artığ) were released on judicial control conditions; 2 people (Senem Farsak and Pelin Akbaş) were released on house confinement; and 8 people (Abdullah Karaer, Ali Can Güzel, Aytaç Özçelik, Edip Ufuk Yeşilova, Erinç Dinçer, Yusuf Gül, Sadık Altınöz and Ruhan Mavruk) were arrested by the court.

(11/027) Detained People for Social Media Posts…

It is learned from the news coverage of October 31, 2020 that 1 of 9 people who were detained for social media posts about the earthquake that hit Izmir, was arrested. 19 people are detained for the same reason in total and the number of arrested ones is 3.

(11/028) Rosa Women’s Association Member on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against Rojda Barış, a member of Rosa Women’s Association, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on November 2, 2020. The court sentenced Rojda Barış to 6 years and 3 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court acquitted Rojda Barış on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

Rojda Barış was detained on June 26, 2020 and was arrested on June 29, 2020. She was released at the first trial on October 14, 2020.

(11/029) HDP and DBP Members and Executives on Trial in Mardin…

The final trial of the case against Democratic Regions Party (DBP) provincial co-chairs Leyla Bozkurt and Şeyhmuz Sun, HDP Party Assembly members Alaattin Semir Zuğurli and Sedat Ay, and HDP provincial co-chair Ali Sincar is held at Mardin Heavy Penal Court No 4 on November 2, 2020. Ali Sincar and Alaattin Semir Zuğurli joined the trial from prison. The court sentenced Alaattin Semir Zuğurli to 7 years and 6 months, Ali Sincar to 7 years and 1 month, Leyla Bozkurt to 6 years 10 months and 15 days, Şeyhmuz Sun to 6 years and 8 months, Sedat Ay to 6 years 10 months and 15 days, on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. The court decided to release Ali Sincar and Alaattin Semir Zuğurli.

(11/030) Dargeçit JİTEM Case…

The case against 18 people, for forced disappearance of 8 people including 3 children who were detained in Dargeçit district of Mardin between October 29, 2015 and March 8, 1996; and of special sergeant Bilal Batır, who was alleged to inform families of those disappeared forcefully, is held on Adıyaman Heavy Penal Court No 1 on the charge of ‘intentional killing’ on November 2, 2020. It is learned that writs for locating address of Ahmet Kul, district public prosecutor back then who was expected to be heard as witness, was not affirmed. The court decided to send a writ to security forces for investigation of address of Ahmet Kul and adjourned the trial to March 29, 2021.

(11/031) Non-Prosecution of a Police Officer in Mardin…

It is learned from the news coverage of November 2, 2020 that the investigation of Derik Public Prosecutor’s Office against police office A. Ö., on the grounds of committing physical violence to a person named S. Y. in Derik district of Mardin on April 25, 2020; is resulted in non-prosecution for S. Y. did not file any charges against the police officer.

(11/032) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On November 2, 2020, 13 people are detained in operations covering 4 cities through a Bursa based investigation.

(11/033) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 76 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 2,302 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on November 2, 2020.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 10,402 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 379,775 as of November 2, 2020.

It is learned that physician Aydın Ünsal in Kocaeli died from Covid-19 on November 2, 2020.
