It is learned from the news coverage of May 3, 2024, that 1 militant died in a clash between Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in the Qandil area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on April 21, 2024.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 2, 2024, that the body of Mohammed Azeez Mahdi M., an Iraqi citizen who was reported missing in Sakarya on April 11, 2024, was found buried in the garden of a workplace and 8 people were detained.
(05/013) Racist Attack Attempt in Adana…
It is learned from the news coverage of May 2, 2024, that in the Yüreğir district of Adana, the house of a Syrian family was raided by the neighborhood people upon the allegations that a child (4, m) was sexually abused by another Syrian child (11, m), the belongings in the house were thrown to the street and the family was subjected to a lynch attempt. It is also reported in the news that the police took the Syrian family away from the scene.

It is learned that the appeal made on May 2, 2024, to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by lawyers in order to visit their clients PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded by Bursa Public Prosecutor’s Office.
It is learned that the appeal made on May 3, 2024, to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s family and tutelary along with the families and tutelary of Ömer Hayri Konar, Hamili Yıldırım and Veysi Aktaş in İmralı Prison was not responded to.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 2, 2024, that the police intervened in the justice watch of Emine Şenyaşar, whose husband Hacı Esvet Şenyaşar and sons Adil and Celal Şenyaşar were killed after a quarrel between Justice and Development Party (AKP) MP candidate İbrahim Halil Yıldız and his bodyguards and shopkeepers in Suruç district of Urfa on June 14, 2018, in front of Ministry of Justice on May 2, 2024; and prevented Emine Şenyaşar and took down the posters she had hung.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 2, 2024, that the police intervened against the march in Kuğulu Park for the beginning of the 19th Workers’ Film Festival in Ankara and prevented the march.

On May 3, 2024, at least 47 people were detained in house raids in Istanbul on the grounds that they wanted to march from Saraçhane to Taksim Square on May 1, Labor Day. Footage of some of the detainees being handcuffed behind their backs was published on the social media account of Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya.

On May 2, 2024, at least 20 people were detained in house raids in Bursa on the allegations of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ and taken to Bursa Provincial Security Directorate. The names of the detainees are as follows: Sabiha Toktaş, Saliha Toktaş, Nesiba Akan, Yusuf Yağız, Mahmut Yıldırım, Sadiye Çelik, Nurcan Apakan, Elif Karatekin, Mazlum Aymaz, Emine Borne, Yusuf Vural.

Documentary filmmaker and cinematographer Koray Kesik was detained in a house raid in Izmir on May 2, 2024. Koray Kesik was restricted from seeing his lawyer for 24 hours and the reason of his detention is unknown.

It is learned that U.P.Ö. (17), who was detained on April 3, 2024, during the protests in Istanbul against the decision of the Van Provincial Election Board to give the mandate to Abdulahat Arvas, Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) candidate, and who was arrested on the charges of ‘damaging public property’ and ‘violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations’, was released upon the appeal of lawyers.

The trial of the case against former MP Leyla Zana for 4 speeches and 3 social media posts she made in 2014 and 2015, continued on May 2, 2024, at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 27. The prosecutor declared the final opinion on the case and demanded Leyla Zana be sentenced for ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court adjourned the trial to July 2, 2024.

The final hearing of the case against journalist Barış Terkoğlu, on the charge of ‘targeting people involved in the fight against terrorism’ through 2 news reports he made, was held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 13 on May 2, 2024. The court sentenced the journalist to 2 years in prison.

The trial of the case against 9 people including Mehmet Kamış, former Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the shutdown Zaman newspaper, continued on May 2, 2024, at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 26. The indictment demands a sentence for the defendants on the charges of “attempting to abolish the Grand National Assembly of Turkey or preventing it from performing its duty”, “attempting to abolish the Government of the Republic of Turkey or preventing it from performing its duty”, “attempting to abolish the constitutional order” and ” being a member of an illegal organization”. The court decided to continue the detention of Mehmet Kamış and adjourned the trial to a later date.

The first trial of the case against Lawyers for Freedom Association (ÖHD) member lawyer Özüm Vurgun, for 14 protests and events she participated in, started on May 2, 2024, at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 4. The indictment demands a sentence for Özüm Vurgun on the charge of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’. The court acquitted Özüm Vurgun.

The final trial of the case against Human Rights Association (IHD) co-chair Eren Keskin and Gülistan Yarkın, member of Commission Against Racism and Discrimination, on the charge of ‘degrading the Turkish Nation, the State of the Republic of Turkey, institutions and organs of the State’ for their statements on the Armenian Genocide on April 24, 2021, was held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 51 on May 2, 2024. The court acquitted the human rights defenders.

The final trial of the case against 35 people, including journalist Buse Söğütlü, for participating in the Feminist Night March in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on March 8, 2020, on the charges of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No 2911’, ‘resisting to prevent duty’ and ‘damaging public property’ was held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 58 on May 2, 2024. The court acquitted 35 people.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 2, 2024, that Çankaya District Governorate banned the screening of the documentary film ‘Kanun Hükmü’, the opening film of the 19th Workers’ Film Festival in Ankara, between May 2 and May 4, 2024.
The Workers’ Film Festival announced on its social media account on May 3, 2024, that the screening of the documentary film ‘Kanun Hükmü’ was banned by the Beyoğlu and Kadıköy District Governorships in Istanbul.

It is learned from the news coverage of May 3, 2024, that Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) imposed separate administrative fines on NOW TV for ‘violating the privacy of private life’ on the grounds of reporting on the allegations of texts sent to the phone of Deputy Minister of Justice demanding promotion, and on TELE1 TV for exceeding the limits of criticism in the program ‘Turkey’s Agenda’ on the grounds that the statements of Right Party Chairman about Tansu Çiller exceeded the limits of criticism.

The Ministry of Interior announced on May 2, 2024, that 36 people were detained in operations conducted in 17 provinces.
30 people were detained on May 3, 2024, as part of an investigation by the Izmir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.
