(05/017) Musician Killed in Racist Attack in Istanbul…
It is learned that a street musician named Cihan Aymaz was stabbed to death by a person named Mehmet Caymaz, with whom he had a quarrel for not singing the song “I will die for you Turkey”, in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on May 3, 2023.
(05/018) May 14, 2023 General Elections…
5 of 19 people (Mezopotamya News Agency reporter Sedat Yılmaz, Dicle Fırat Journalists’ Association co-chair Dicle Müftüoğlu, Erol Balcı, Abdurrahim Tanyeli and Ramazan Debe) who were detained through an Ankara based investigation on April 29, 2023, are arrested by the court on May 2, 2023. 14 people are released on judicial control conditions.
2 people (Dilan Karakoç and Berat Sabırlı) who were detained on the grounds of the slogans chanted at the opening of the Greens and Left Future Party (YSP) campaign office in Menemen district of Izmir on April 30, 2023, are released on May 2, 2023.
It is learned that 3 people including YSP deputy candidate Serdal Zımba were injured in the attack on the campaign stand of YSP in Edirne on May 2, 2023. It is learned that 5 people were detained in relation to the attack.
It is learned from the news coverage of May 2, 2023 that, on public channel Turkish Radio Television news bulletin, the President and the Justice and Development Party (AKP) chair was on live broadcast for 32 hours and 42 minutes, and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) chair was on live broadcast for 25 hours and 27 minutes, and the Republican People’s Party (CHP) chair was on live broadcast only for 32 minutes between April 1 to May 1, 2023. It is also stated in the news reports that the political parties in the People’s Alliance were on live broadcast for 59 hours 11 minutes and 6 seconds in total however the political parties of the Nation Alliance were on live broadcast for only 42 minutes and 58 seconds.

It is learned that the Revolutionary Party member Erkin Göynüler who was detained by the police intervening in the groups marching towards Taksim Square in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul on May 1, 2023, was detained once again by the Anti-Terror department officers on May 2, 2023 after he was released.
(05/20) People on Trial in Izmir…
It is learned that the indictment of Izmir Public Prosecutor’s Office against 21 people was accepted by Izmir Penal Court of First Instance No. 28 on April 28, 2023. The first trial will be held on May 8, 2023. 21 people were detained by the police intervening in in the sit-in protest in front of the Dokuz Eylül University Rectorate on February 17, 2023 to protest online education decision for universities due to the earthquakes.
(05/021) Vartinis Massacre Case…
The retrial of the case against former gendarmerie lieutenant Bülent Karaoğlu, for death of 9 members of Öğüt family including 7 children, in their house that was burned down by soldiers on May 17, 1993 in Altınova (Vartinis) town of Korkut district in Muş; is held at Kırıkkale Heavy Penal Court No. 1 on May 2, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to June 7, 2023.
The final trial of the case was held on March 1, 2016; and the local court has acquitted all 4 defendants (Hasköy Gendarmerie Commander lieutenant Bülent Karaoğlu, Hasköy District Company Commander Lieutenant Hanifi Akyıldız, Gökyazı Gendarmerie Commander master sergeant Turhan Nurdoğan and Muş Security Directorate Special Task Department chief police Şerafettin Us). On January 26, 2021, the Penal Department No. 1 of the Court of Cassation has approved the acquittal for 3 defendants but reversed the local court’s verdict regarding Bülent Karaoğlu, who was the commander of Hasköy Gendarmerie Station back then.
(05/022) Security Officer on Trial for Death of Mehmet Uytun…
On October 9, 2009, a 16 month-old baby Mehmet Uytun, has been shot by a gas bomb shell which was used by the security officers intervening a protest, while he was on the balcony of his house in Cizre district of Şırnak. The trial of the case against specialized sergeant H. A. is held at Cizre Penal Court of First Instance No. 1 on May 2, 2023. The prosecutor declared legal opinion on the case and demanded sentence of 2 years to 6 years for the defendant on the charge of ‘reckless killing’. The court adjourned the trial to May 11, 2023.
(05/023) Musician on Trial in Istanbul…
The final trial of the case against musician Gülşen Bayraktar Çolakoğlu, on the grounds of the expressions that she allegedly used at a concert is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 11 on May 3, 2023. The court sentenced Gülşen Bayraktar Çolakoğlu to 10 months on the charge of ‘inciting hatred and hostility among public’ and deferred the announcement of the verdict.
Gülşen Bayraktar Çolakoğlu was detained and arrested on August 25, 2022; and she was released on house confinement upon the objection on August 29, 2022. The house confinement decision was lifted on September 12, 2022.

It is learned that 16 people were detained in Ankara and 10 people were detained in Istanbul on May 3, 2023.
(05/025) Earthquakes in Antep and Maraş…
The Minister of Family and Social Services made a statement on May 2, 2023 and declared that a total of 1,914 unaccompanied children were registered in the system, 1,813 of them were identified and given to their families, 25 children were in the hospital, 66 children were in the institutions of the ministry, and 6 children could not be identified.
