It is learned from the news coverage of March 2, 2023 that, prisoners who were transferred to Antalya Manavgat S Type Prison were subjected to strip search, and those who reject it were subjected to disciplinary proceedings.

It is learned that the appeal made on March 2, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

It is learned from the news coverage that, the number of contractors, including Nurdağı district mayor Ökkeş Kavak, who were arrested for their responsibility in the buildings collapsed in Antep and Maraş earthquakes is 237 as of March 2, 2023.

3 people who were detained by the police intervening in the press declaration of the Left Party which was held in Kadıköy district of Istanbul on March 1, 2023 regarding the earthquakes; are released on March 2, 2023, provided that 2 of them will be on judicial control conditions. 74 people were released on the same day.

The police intervened in the press declaration held in front of Çağlayan Courthouse in Istanbul on March 2, 2023, regarding İbrahim Devrim Top, who died in a police raid in Sarıyer district of Istanbul on September 13, 2018; and detained 4 people (Merve Demirel, Aslıhan Buçaklar, Emir Karakum and Mehmet Tunçay). Detained people were released on the same day.

7 people who were detained at the neighbourhood office of the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) in Osmaniye which was raided by the police on February 28, 2023, are released by the court on judicial control conditions on March 2, 2023.

The trial of the case against Öztürk Türkdoğan, co-chair of the Human Rights Association (HRA), on the grounds of the statement of the HRA on April 24, 2017, regarding the Armenian Genocide, is held at Ankara Penal Court of First Instance No. 24 on March 3, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Öztürk Türkdoğan on the charge of ‘publicly degrading the State of the Republic of Turkey’. Öztürk Türkdoğan attended the trial and made a defence. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to March 16, 2023.

The trial of the case against 23 people including lawyers Sezin Uçar, Özlem Gümüştaş and Gülhan Kaya from Law Office of the Oppressed; Etkin News Agency news editor İsminaz Temel and reporter Havva Cuştan, and members and executives of Socialist Party of the Oppressed (ESP) is held at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 27 on March 2, 2023. The court rejected to lift judicial control conditions and adjourned the trial to June 13, 2023.

The retrial of the case against Taraf newspaper’s former employees Ahmet Altan, Yasemin Çongar, Yıldıray Oğur and Mehmet Baransu, is held on March 2, 2023 as the Penal Department No. 27 of Istanbul Regional Court has overturned the verdicts of Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No. 13. Mehmet Baransu joined the trial via sound and vision system. The court adjourned the trial to May 31, 2023.

It is learned that Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation against lawyer Erkan Çiftçi, a member of Gençlerbirliği football team Kara Kızıl fan club, for his statements in a television programme the about the prohibition of some fans from football matches for the slogans calling the government to resign, and that Erkan Çiftçi was called by the police to give a statement on March 2, 2023.
(03/046) Vartinis Massacre Case…
The retrial of the case against former gendarmerie lieutenant Bülent Karaoğlu, for death of 9 members of Öğüt family including 7 children, in their house that was burned down by soldiers on May 17, 1993 in Altınova (Vartinis) town of Korkut district in Muş; is held at Kırıkkale Heavy Penal Court No. 1 on March 2, 2023. The court adjourned the trial to March 30, 2023.
The final trial of the case was held on March 1, 2016; and the local court has acquitted all 4 defendants (Hasköy Gendarmerie Commander lieutenant Bülent Karaoğlu, Hasköy District Company Commander Lieutenant Hanifi Akyıldız, Gökyazı Gendarmerie Commander master sergeant Turhan Nurdoğan and Muş Security Directorate Special Task Department chief police Şerafettin Us). On January 26, 2021, the Penal Department No. 1 of the Court of Cassation has approved the acquittal for 3 defendants but reversed the local court’s verdict regarding Bülent Karaoğlu, who was the commander of Hasköy Gendarmerie Station back then.

The ban of access to https://eksisozluk.com website which was ruled by Ankara Penal Court of Peace No. 4 on February 22, 2023 on the grounds of ‘protection of national security and public order’ was lifted upon objection on March 2, 2023. It is learned that the objection was appealed to Ankara Penal Court of Peace No. 5 and the ban decision was finalised.
