As they continued to run, we fired a warning shot into the air. I fired 4 shots without aiming to stop the horsemen to the right and left. I thought that these people might be members of the illegal organisation or those who brought weapons to the organization. Then we carried out search and scanning activities, and a quarrel took place with the villagers as they attacked with stones. We found a horse in the area and there was an injured person nearby. We contacted the police station and called an ambulance. (…) They did not have guns in their hands but I considered as it were and had to open fire around.”

Sami Yılmaz, a witness, stated the following in his statement: “We took smuggled cigarettes from Iranian people on the day of the incident. We took cigarettes and passed 100-150 meters from the police station. We never expected that they would shoot at us. We were not given a ‘stop’ warning. Even if we did, the horse would not stop, because it was being shot at, too. I was shot in the arm. Erhan was shot 100-150 meters away from me. In fact, Iranians were sitting 100-150 meters from the police station and drinking tea. When the person who shot me came to me, he started swearing. When the villagers came to the scene, a soldier stepped on my head so that my voice would not be heard.”
