It is learned from the news coverage of July 3, 2024, that 1 militant died in a clash between the Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in the Qandil area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on June 9, 2024.
(07/027) Syrian Refugee/Asylum Seeker Child Lost His Life in a Racist Attack…
It is learned from the news coverage of July 3, 2024, that Ahmet Handan El Naif (17, m), a Syrian refugee/asylum seeker child lost his life after being subjected to a knife attack by 3 people in the Serik district of Antalya. It is reported that 3 people (R. Ö., Y. Y. and İ. Ö.) were detained for the racist attack.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 2, 2024, that the United Textile, Weaving and Leather Workers’ Union (BİRTEK-SEN) announced on its social media account that Syrian refugee/asylum-seeker workers in Antep could not go to work due to racist attacks, and that racist groups blocked the buses carrying refugees/asylum-seeker workers and tried to force them out of the vehicles.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 2, 2024, that Muhammed M., a Syrian refugee/asylum seeker, and 1 person had a quarrel in a park in the Melikgazi district of Kayseri. Muhammed M. was attacked with a knife and got wounded and was taken under treatment in hospital.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 2, 2024, that M. İ. (43, m) verbally attacked Saudi Arabian citizens with racist expressions and threatened them with a knife in a restaurant in the Sarıyer district of Istanbul. It is reported that M. İ. was detained and arrested by the criminal peace judgeship on the charges of ‘intentional injury’ and ‘resisting to prevent duty’.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 3, 2024, that 3 vehicles in a business of Syrian refugees/asylum seekers in the Kepez district of Antalya were set on fire by anonymous people.
(07/032) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of July 2, 2024, that 2 prisoners were transferred from Istanbul Marmara L Type Prison No 7 to Tekirdağ Çorlu Karatepe High-Security Prison against their will on June 27, 2024, and their families were informed 3 days after the transfer. It is also reported in the news that 2 prisoners were subjected to physical and psychological violence during the transfer process, were forced to strip search, were kept in solitary cells in the prison they were transferred to, and were prevented from using their communication rights.
It is learned from the news coverage of July 2, 2024, that Halil Yakut, a prisoner in Kırşehir High-Security Prison, has been kept in a solitary room since February 12, 2024. It is learned that the room does not see the sun, he can only use the right to ventilation for 1 hour a day, and there are frequent water cuts in the prison.
It is learned from the news coverage of July 3, 2024, that Zeynep Gonca Karakoç, a prisoner in Izmir Şakran Women’s Prison, who objected to the seizure of her pens by the correction officers during a ward search on March 27, 2024, was subjected to physical violence and death threats of the correction officers saying ‘we will kill you here’; that the prisoner underwent an operation due to fracture of the platinum in her foot as a result of torture and ill-treatment; and that the prosecutor’s office decided not to prosecute the criminal complaint against the correction officers and gave a communication penalty against Zeynep Gonca Karakoç.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 2, 2024, that Halil Yakut, a prisoner who was arrested after being detained in Istanbul on February 12, 2024, and has been kept in a solitary room in Kırşehir High-Security Prison since then, has been on an indefinite hunger strike since April 18, 2024, demanding to be transferred to the same ward with his friends.
(07/034) Police Intervention Against a Sit-In Protest in Ankara…
During the police intervention against the members of the Private Teachers’ Union who staged a sit-in protest in front of the Ministry of National Education (“MEB”) regarding their demands on the Law on Teaching Profession, which is on the agenda of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), 25 people were detained and subjected to torture and ill-treatment. All of them were released by the police on the same day after their statements.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 2, 2024, that journalist Batuhan Çolak, publisher and executive editor of Aykırı news portal, was detained on the grounds of ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’ through a social media post. Batuhan Çolak was released by the criminal peace judgeship on judicial control conditions on the same day.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 3, 2024, that at least 4 people including the Halkevleri Çanakkale branch chair were detained in house raids in Izmir and Çanakkale, for wanting to march to Taksim during May 1 celebrations. The names of detained people could not be learned.

The final trial of the case against former MP Leyla Zana, on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organization’ through 4 speeches and 3 social media posts she made in 2014 and 2015, was held at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 27 on July 2, 2024. The court acquitted Leyla Zana.

The final hearing of the case against 11 journalists for 149 news reports in Jinnews and Mezopotamya News Agency (MA) was held on July 3, 2024, at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 4. The court sentenced 8 journalists (Berivan Altan, Selman Güzelyüz, Diren Yurtsever, Emrullah Acar, Hakan Yalçın, Öznur Değer, Deniz Nazlım and Zemo Ağgöz) to 6 years and 3 months each for ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and acquitted 3 journalists (Habibe Eren, Ceylan Şahinli and Mehmet Günhan).
(07/039) Journalist on Trial in Istanbul…
The first trial of the case against journalist Furkan Karabay for his news article titled “Bribery fight in Mafia case in minutes” and 1 social media post, started on July 2, 2024, at Istanbul Heavy Penal Court No 24. The prosecutor declared his final opinion on the case and demanded a sentence for the journalist on the charges of ‘targeting people who took part in the fight against terrorism’ and ‘publicly insulting a public officer for his duty’. The court adjourned the hearing to October 1, 2024.

The final hearing of the case against journalist Haluk Kalafat and Media and Law Studies Association (MLSA) courthouse reporter Elif Akgül for their news reports on the Armenian Genocide was held on July 2, 2024, at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 2. The court acquitted the journalists of the charge of ‘publicly degrading the Turkish nation’ under Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK).
(07/041) Indictment Prepared Against a Police Officer…
It is learned from the news coverage of July 2, 2024, that an indictment is prepared against 1 police officer, whose name is unknown, on the charge of ‘intentional injury by abusing authority’ in relation to subjecting İsmail İshak Arslan to physical violence by police officers on May 26, 2023, in the Üsküdar district of Istanbul, on the grounds that he made a heart sign to a car carrying Süleyman Soylu, Minister of Interior at the time, and was forced into a civilian car.

The Governorate of Antalya announced on July 2, 2024, that all demonstrations/events (marches, press statements, hunger strikes, sit-ins, stands/tents, gatherings for any purpose, picnics, etc.) to be held throughout the province during Pride Month are banned for 15 days between July 1, 2024 and July 15, 2024.
