(01/011) Service Vehicle Crush in Mardin…

6 people died and 5 people were injured in the shuttle vehicle carrying the governorship and university employees which rolled over in Ömerli district of Mardin on January 2, 2023. It is learned that an investigation has been initiated regarding the incident.

(01/012) Person Subjected to Torture and Ill-Treatment in Diyarbakır…

It is learned from the news coverage of January 2, 2023 that, a person named Emre Elaltunterin who was stopped by the special operation police officers for general information check in Bağlar district of Diyarbakır on December 28, 2022, was subjected to torture and ill-treatment of the police and was detained afterwards. Diyarbakır Governorate’s Office made a declaration on January 2, 2023 and stated the following: “On 14/12/2022 at around 18.00, a citizen named E.E. who was stopped on suspect at a narcotics-area check point in Bağlar district was searched and it was understood that there was a knife in the back pocket of his trousers, and while the knife was being tried to be seized, the person caused the finger of a law enforcement officer to be cut off by resisting the law enforcement officers by showing aggressive attitudes. 2 officers who were detected to have used disproportionate force while trying to neutralize the person by using force gradually, were suspended and an investigation is initiated against them”.

(01/013) Torture and Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Ankara…

The reports on torture allegations at Ankara Provincial Security Directorate Anti-Terror Branch, Narcotics Branch and Sincan Police Station on January 25, February 8, March 7 and 8, 2022, based on the interviews with the persons alleged to be subjected to torture, held by the Ankara Bar Association Human Rights Center at January 26, March 2 and 8, and April 4, 2022 are published on January 3, 2023. It is stated in the reports that the lawyers assigned by the Ankara Bar Association Human Rights Center were prevented from entering the meeting room with their phones, they could not take pictures during the interviews, and the traces of torture and ill-treatment were visible in all of the interviewees. It is noted in the reports, that the interviewees were forcibly taken to interrogation under the name of “interview” and were forced to be police informants; they were forced to stand in a prostrate position and were subjected to physical violence during this time; forcibly stripped of their clothes while being subjected to sexual harassment and threats of rape; they were subjected to verbal violence and threats; one person reported that during the interviews, the officers said, ‘Get up and do a striptease for us’ and another person stated that “the police in the room next to the interview room, were drinking alcohol”. In addition, it is stated in the report that one person stated that “the doctor’s examination was carried out by a person in a lab coat coming to the police custody and shouting in the corridor if there is anybody suffering from anything” and left.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 2, 2023 that, Ramazan Karataş a prisoner who was transferred from Balıkesir L Type Prison to Konya Ereğli High Security Prison under coercion was kept in a solitary cell.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 3, 2023 that, a prison named Nurullah Yıldız in Bolu F Type Prison was not given the textbooks he needed for university education.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 3, 2023 that, the petitions of Seda Baykan regarding the right violations she was subjected to in Diyarbakır Women’s Closed Prison, addressing the Presidential Communications Center, the Ministry of Justice and the Grand National Assembly Human Rights Commission were not sent.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 3, 2023 that, 16 prisoners in Afyonkarahisar T Type Prison No. 1 started a hunger strike on January 3, 2023 to demand an end to right violations.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 3, 2023 that, the prisoners in Izmir Şakran Women’s Closed Prison started a 10-day hunger strike in turns on January 3, 2023 to demand an end to right violations.

It is learned that the appeal made on January 3, 2023 to the chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

It is learned from the news coverage of January 3, 2023 that, Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an investigation against designer Eda Taşpınar, on the grounds of “inciting hatred and hostility among people and degrading public” by sharing a photo of herself taken in a mosque inside of a hotel on social media.

It is learned that 17 people were detained in Ankara on January 3, 2023.
