(02/029) Male Violence Monitoring Report…

According to the “Male Violence Monitoring Report” of Bianet published on February 3, 2023, at least 31 women and 4 children got killed by men in January 2023. It is also reported that at least 72 women were subjected to violence, 7 women were harassed, 6 women was forced to sex work and 11 children were abused by men in January 2023.

(02/030) Person Injured by Police Fire in Van…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 2, 2023 that, a person named Ümit Yıldız was injured as a result of the fire opened on a vehicle by undercover police officers in Özalp district of Van on February 1, 2023.

(02/031) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on February 2, 2023 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by the lawyers of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan, in order to visit him was not responded.

(02/032) Detained People in Van…

It is learned that 3 people (Şengül Karaağar, Nurhan Koçak and Zilan Koçak) are detained in house raids in İpekyolu district of Van on February 3, 2023. The reason for detention is unknown.

(02/033) Co-Mayors on Trial in Mardin…

The final trial of the case against Nilüfer Elik Yılmaz, HDP co-mayor of Kızıltepe district; and Gülistan Öncü, HDP co-mayor of Savur district, is held at Mardin Heavy Penal Court No. 2 on February 2, 2023. The court sentenced Nilüfer Elik Yılmaz and Gülistan Öncü to 6 years and 3 months each, on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

The Ministry of Interior appointed sub-governors as trustees to Kızıltepe (on November 4, 2019) and to Savur (November 16, 2019). Gülistan Öncü was detained on November 15, 2019 and was arrested on November 26, 2019. Nilüfer Elik Yılmaz was detained on December 12, 2019 and was arrested by the court on December 16, 2019. Öncü and Yılmaz were released from the prison on April 1, 2021.

(02/034) Journalist on Trial in Aydın…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 2, 2023 that, the Penal Department No. 2 of Izmir Regional Court has concluded on the appeal for the 1 year and 3 months of jail sentence ruled by Aydın Heavy Penal Court No. 3 in the case against Mezopotamya News Agency reporter Ahmet Kanbal, and acquitted Ahmet Kanbal. The case was opened upon the complaint of former Gendarmerie Deputy Commander Musa Çitil and the local court ruled sentence on the charge of ‘targeting officials who took part in anti-terror activities’.

(02/035) People on Trial in Istanbul…

The trial of the case against 35 people including journalist Buse Söğütlü, on the grounds of participating in the Feminist Night March held in Istanbul on March 8, 2020, is held at Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 58 on February 2, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for 35 people on the charges of ‘violating the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations’, ‘resisting to prevent public duty’ and ‘damage to public property’. The court adjourned the trial to September 26, 2023.

(02/036) DBP Executive on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The first trial of the case against the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Diyarbakır provincial co-chair Hayrettin Altun is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No. 5 on February 2, 2023. The indictment demands sentence for Hayrettin Altun on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. Hayrettin Altun attended the trial and made defence. After defence hearings the court decided to release Hayrettin Altun and adjourned the trial to March 9, 2023. Hayrettin Altun was detained on December 23, 2022 and was arrested by the court on December 27, 2023.

(02/037) Murat Daşkan Case…

After the Penal Department No. 13 of Adana Regional Court has overturned the acquittal decision of Adana Heavy Penal Court No. 1 in the case against police officer B. O., on the grounds of ‘killing with probable intent’, regarding death of Murat Daşkan during the police intervention to a protest in Seyhan district of Adana on February 1, 2016; the retrial is held on February 2, 2023. The court acquitted the defendant police officer on the grounds of ‘lack of evidence’. It is also learned that the court decided to make criminal complaint against several police officers on the grounds of spoiling the evidence.

It is learned that the news reports about criticism of the President’s statements, published on https://www.diken.com.tr, https://halktv.com.tr, https://yonhaber.com, https://www.birgun.net, https://yonhaber.com https://www.cumhuriyet.com.tr, https://www.yenicaggazetesi.com.tr websites are ruled to be deleted and banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of Peace No. 6 on February 2, 2023.

It is learned that the news report about a member of the Constitutional Court, published on https://www.gercekgundem.com website is ruled to be deleted and banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Ankara Penal Court of Peace No. 5 on February 2, 2023.

It is learned that the news reports about the President’s son Bilal Erdoğan, published on https://www.birgun.net and https://www.cumhuriyet.com.tr (2 news) websites are ruled to be deleted and banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of Peace No. 6 on February 2, 2023.
