3 February 2022 Daily Human Rights Report

(02/022) Asylum Seekers Died in Edirne…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 2, 2022 that, in Paşaköy village of Ipsala district of Edirne, 12 asylum seekers froze to death. It is claimed in the news reports that; the asylum seekers were pushed back to Turkish border by security forces in Greece.

Edirne Governorate made the following declaration: “On 02.02.2022, bodies of 9 migrants who were pushed back by the Greeks in Mandakoru area of Paşaköy village in Ipsala district and who froze to death are found. One migrant who was about to froze is rescued and admitted to Keşan Public Hospital (…) After field search two more bodies are found dead. As the person admitted to hospital died, the death toll raised to 12.”

The Ministry of National Defence announced that 1 soldier (Tarık Tarcan) died in an attack on a border post in rural areas of Şırnak on February 2, 2022.

(02/024) Person Died in Prison…

It is learned that Turgay Deniz, a 39-year-old ill prisoner in Istanbul Metris T Type Prison No 1, lost his life in hospital on February 2, 2022. It is reported that he has been admitted to Yedikule Chest Diseases Research and Training Hospital in January without informing his family, and that as he deteriorated, the prison administration called his family and informed them that Turgay Deniz was released from prison and receiving treatment at hospital.

Baver Deniz, Turgay Deniz’s brother stated the following: “They took my brother to the hospital without informing us. As they found out at the hospital that there is no chance of surviving, we got a call from the prison, saying ‘Turgay Deniz is released and at the hospital’. We went there happily to the hospital, as we thought that we could bring him home, but his condition was not good (…) The doctors said ‘come and see him for the last time’ yesterday, his all body got infected.”

(02/025) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of February 2, 2022 that, in Çorum Sungurlu T Type Prison, 24 prisoners are kept in a ward for 10 people.

(02/026) Police Raid to Human Rights Association Diyarbakır Office…

On February 3, 2022, the police raided Diyarbakır office of the Human Rights Association (IHD). It is learned that the reason of detention is the search warrant for Ferhat Berkpınar, an executive board member of the IHD Diyarbakır branch, through an Adıyaman based investigation. It is learned that the office was entered with the help of a locksmith without even notifying the branch executives, and documents and digital material which are not related to the investigation were also seized and the objections of the lawyers were not noted in the report.

The police intervened the press declaration which were made within the scope of “I Want My Job Back Protest” in front of Human Rights Monument in Yüksel Street on February 2, 2022 and forced people away from the monument by using physical violence.

The police intervened the press declaration of Şişli Municipality workers in front of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) on February 2, 2022 and forced people away from the building by using physical violence.

(02/029) Detained Human Rights Defender in Diyarbakır…

Ferhat Berkpınar, an executive board member of the IHD Diyarbakır branch is detained through an Adıyaman based investigation on February 3, 2022. It is learned that Ferhat Berkpınar is restricted from seeing a lawyer for a day and will be taken to Adıyaman.

(02/030) Investigation Against Journalist…

Jinnews reporter Nişmiye Güler, is taken by the police from her home and brought to Çağlayan Courthouse in Istanbul, to give her statement through an investigation launched by Diyarbakır Bismil Public Prosecutor’s Office on February 2, 2022. Nişmiye Güler is released by the court on judicial control conditions.

(02/031) Detained DBP Executive in Diyarbakır…

Seval Gülmez, Diyarbakır provincial co-chair of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) who has been detained on January 29, 2022 and was released as she tested positive for Covid-19, is released once again on February 2, 2022. Seval Gülmez is arrested by the court on the same day.

(02/032) Detained Person in Diyarbakır…

Peace Mother Şükran Akboğa is detained on the grounds of social media posts in Diyarbakır on February 2, 2022. It is learned that although Şükran Akboğa submitted the medical reports evidencing her serious disease for which she had recently got treatment, she was detained anyway. Şükran Akboğa is released after statement procedures on the same day.

(02/033) Detained People in Şırnak…

On February 2, 2022, 3 people (Hamdiye Kaşbaş, Meryem Malgaz and Hamza Kaşak) are detained in house raids in İdil district of Şırnak. The reason of detention is unknown.

On February 2, 2022, 4 people are detained on the grounds of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ in house raids in Bozova district of Urfa.

(02/035) Detained People in Şırnak…

4 people who were detained in Cizre district of Şırnak on January 29, 2022, are released after statement procedures at the prosecutor’s office on February 2, 2022.

(02/036) Journalist on Trial in Aydın…

The trial of the case against Mezopotamya News Agency reporter Ahmet Kanbal, for his social media posts, is held at Aydın Heavy Peal Court No 3 on February 2, 2022.

The indictment demands sentence for Ahmet Kanbal on the charges of ‘targeting anti-terror officers’ and ‘insult’.

After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to March 2, 2022.

(02/037) Lawyer on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against lawyer Newroz Uysal, through an investigation on the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 10 on February 2, 2022. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to May 27, 2022.

(02/038) City Council Member on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The trial of the case against Ceylan Aslan, city council member from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Ergani district, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 11 on February 3, 2022. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to May 18, 2022.

(02/039) Ban of Events in Hakkari…

Hakkari Governorate made a declaration on February 2, 2022 and announced that all meetings, open-door assemblies, demonstrations, marches, sit-in protests, human chains, op-ed stands, public sessions, any kind of audio-visual activities with mobile audio-visual vehicles, hunger strikes, opening stands, collecting petitions, flying sky lanterns or balloons, commemorations, concerts, festivals, theatre plays, screening shows, firing torches, distributing leaflets, hanging banners and so on are banned for 15 days as of February 3, 2022. All events are banned in Hakkari for 622 days since June 5, 2020.

(02/040) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 217 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 110,682 as of February 2, 2022.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 87,831 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 11,833,165 as of February 2, 2022.
