(08/015) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…
It is learned from the news coverage of August 2, 2023 that there was mouse in some wards of Istanbul Marmara (Silivri) L Type Prison No. 9 and that the prison administration took no action about this although the prisoners wrote petitions.
It is claimed in the news coverage of August 3, 2023 that the prisoners in Istanbul Marmara (Silivri) L Type Prison No. 9 were asked to pay the subsistence cost and those who do not pay were threatened to be investigated.
It is learned from the news coverage of August 3, 2023 that a prisoner named Vahdettin Erdem in Konya Ereğli High Security Prison was threatened by the correction officers saying “Your aim is to defame the state, you are eating its bread, but you are still being ungrateful, what do you think you are doing? We are the state, our duty is to bring you to your knees”, as the right violations he told to his family was reported in the media.
(08/016) Gendarmerie Intervention to Defenders in Muğla…
The gendarmerie used pepper spray and batons to intervene in the rights defenders and residents protesting the tree felling for a lignite mine intended to be established in Akbelen Forest in Milas district of Muğla, on August 2, 2023 and detained 1 person (Tuğulka Köseoğlu). Detained person was released on judicial control conditions by the prosecutor’s office on August 3, 2023.

The gendarmerie intervened in the protest against dismantlement by Dicle Electricity Distribution Inc. of 6 transformers by court decision due to debt in Ekinciler and Karataş rural neighbourhoods of Mazıdağı district of Mardin on August 2, 2023 and detained 3 people. The names of detained people could not be learned.

The indictment of Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office against journalists Pınar Gayıp, Eylem Nazlıer, Esra Soybir, Zeynep Kuray, Serpil Ünal and Yadigar Aygül, who were detained by the police intervening in the press declaration in Kadköy district of Istanbul on April 29, 2023, to protest detention and arrest of journalists through Diyarbakır and Ankara based investigations; was accepted by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of First Instance No. 22 on August 3, 2023. The first trial will be held on January 10, 2024.

The indictment of Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office against 49 people including Dicle Fırat Journalists’ Association co-chair and Mezopotamya News Agency editor Dicle Müftüoğlu and Mezopotamya News Agency editor Sedat Yılmaz was rejected by Ankara Heavy Penal Court No. 28 on August 2, 2023. The reason for rejection could not be learned due to confidentiality order.

It is learned that the news reports about the allegations that children under the protection of Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Services were taken to camps reported to be associated with religious sects, published on https://haber.sol.org.tr/, https://www.birgun.net, https://www.cumhuriyet.com.tr, https://halktv.com.tr websites were banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No. 5 on August 2, 2023.
It is learned that 30 contents on various websites about the article of journalist Timur Soykan on “illegal betting” were banned to access on the grounds of violation of personal rights by Istanbul Anadolu Penal Court of Peace No. 4 on August 2, 2023.
