(07/029) Operations and Attacks…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 3, 2021 that, 2 HPG militants died in an air operation of Turkish Armed Forces to Zap area of Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government on June 12, 2021.

(07/030) Torture and Ill-Treatment in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of July 2, 2021 that 8 prisoners (Ahmet Topkaya, Ferhat Kaya ve Abdulsittar Özer, Emrah Durmaz, Tarık Aslan, Kendal Barut, Cengiz Kazıcı and Fırat with unknown surname) from Diyarbakır D Type and Diyarbakır High Security No 1 prisons were transferred to Adana Kürkçüler F Type, Elazığ High Security No 2 and Kırıkkale F Type prisons under coercion.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 4, 2021 that, Kendal Barut, a prisoner who was transferred from Diyarbakır D Type Closed Prison to Elazığ High Security Prison No 2, was subjected to physical violence of correction officers for he rejects strip search at the entrance of prison.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 4, 2021 that, 2 prisoners (Mustafa Okçu and Hasan Ortaç) who were taken out of prison by the police raiding their ward in Tokat T Type Prison, were transferred to other prisons. It is learned that Mustafa Okçu was transferred to Elazığ High Security Prison, it is unknown where Hasan Ortaç was transferred.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 4, 2021 that, Sakarya Ferizli L Type Prison is over capacity.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 4, 2021 that, 1 hour visits are applied as 35 minutes at Ankara Sincan Prison.

(07/031) Meeting Request with Abdullah Öcalan Not Responded…

It is learned that the appeal made on July 2, 2021 to chief public prosecutor’s office in Bursa by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan’s lawyers in order to visit their client was not responded.

(07/032) Police Intervention to People Distributing Leaflets in Ankara…

It is learned that the police intervened the people distributing leaflets about 6th year of Suruç Massacre, and detained 5 people by using physical violence, at Dikmen Ahmet Arif Park in Çankaya district of Ankara on July 4, 2021. It is learned that the police fired 10 times up into the air. Detained people are: Mert Karatağ, Tunahan Gözlügöl, Şamil Parlak, Cem Bolatcan, and Enes with unknown surname.

It is learned from the news reports that the police said “One should shoot you at the head but I cannot do it now” to threaten the people distributing leaflets.

It is learned that 4 other people who went to the hospital where detained 5 people have been taken, were also detained after general information check of the police.

(07/033) Police and Private Security Officers’ Intervention to a Protest in Istanbul…

On July 3, 2021, police and private security officers used physical violence against students at Boğaziçi University campus to take them out, following the Rectorate’s decision to close the campus for ‘security and health reasons’ as of 07.00 on July 5, 2021. The students have held an event at the campus on July 2, 2021, to mark the sixth month of new rector appointment by the President, and have stayed in the campus at night.

The police intervened the declaration at the campus gate, to protest the rectorate’s decision and moved the protesters away. It is also learned that the police prevented 2 academicians from entering the campus.

(07/034) Detained Journalist in Bursa…

On July 2, 2021, journalist İrfan Aydın is detained in Bursa, on the grounds of ‘insulting the President and the Minister of Interior”. İfran Aydın is released after statement procedures on the same day.

(07/035) Detained Association Chair and Other People in Istanbul…

On July 3, 2021, 22 people including Religious Scholars Association (DİAY-DER) chair Ekrem Baran and Democratic Islam Congress (DIK) member Mehmet Nas are detained in house raids in Istanbul.

(07/036) Detained Person in Van…

Naif Erdem, who was detained on June 30, 2021 in Van, is released by the court on judicial control conditions on July 2, 2021.

(07/037) Detained Musician in Istanbul for Social Media Posts…

Musician and writer Güvenç Dağüstün is detained for social media posts, at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport on July 2, 2021. Güvenç Dağüstün is released after statement procedures.

(07/038) Detained People in Urfa…

9 of 10 people (Hamdullah Özkıran, Mahmut Parsak, İbrahim Basiyan, Mahsum Temel, Mahsum Demir, Mehmet Salih Eliş, Murşit Arslan, Osman Başkut and Şahin Basiyan) who have been detained through an Urfa based investigation are arrested by the court on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’ on July 2, 2021. 1 person is released on judicial control conditions.

(07/039) Journalists on Trial in Van…

The trial of the case against Mezopotamya News Agency reporters Zeynep Durgut, Adnan Bilen, Cemil Uğur and Jinnews reporter Şehriban Abi and journalist Nazan Sala is held at Van Heavy Penal Court No 5 on July 2, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for 5 journalists on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’. After defence hearings the court adjourned the trial to October 21, 2021.

5 journalists who had made news reports on the allegation that 2 detainees were thrown from helicopter in Çatak district of Van, were detained on October 6, 2021 and 4 of them were arrested by the court on October 9, 2021. 4 arrested journalists were released at the first trail held on April 2, 2021.

(07/040) The Case Against Former Co-mayor and Former DBP Co-chair…

Malatya Heavy Penal Court No 5 has sentenced Gültan Kışanak, former co-mayor of Diyarbakır, to 14 years and 3 months; and Sebahat Tuncel, former co-chair of Democratic Regions Party (DBP), to 15 years; and Penal Department No 18 of Antep Regional Court has reversed the verdict.

The retrial is held at Malatya Heavy Penal Court No 5 on July 2, 2021. Gültan Kışanak and Sabahat Tuncel joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. The court decided to consolidate this case with the Kobanê case at Ankara Heavy Penal Court No 22.

(07/041) The Case Against Former Co-Mayors and City Council Members…

The trial of the case against former Diyarbakır co-mayors Gültan Kışanak and Fırat Anlı, and city council members, for applying “co-chair system”, is held at Diyarbakır Penal Court of First Instance No 10 on July 2, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for co-mayors and city council members on the charges of ‘improperly undertaking public duty’ and ‘misuse of public duty’.

The court board asked city council members to stand up even if they were not the one making statements. Following the lawyers’ objection, the court decided to take Cihan Aydın, Zuhal Tekiner, Zeynep Çelik and Adnan Akgül out of the courtroom by the police. Defendants’ lawyers demanded recusation and left the courtroom. The court decided to send the demand to the related court and adjourned the trial to October 8, 2021.

(07/042) Co-Mayor on Trial in Diyarbakır…

The final trial of the case against Gülistan Ensarioğlu, Eğil district co-mayor who was replaced by a trustee, is held at Diyarbakır Heavy Penal Court No 9 on July 2, 2021.

After defence hearings the court sentenced Gülistan Ensarioğlu to 6 years and 3 months on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

Gülistan Ensarioğlu was detained through an investigation on Democratic Society Congress on September 30, 2020. The Ministry of Interior has appointed a trustee to Eğil district on March 23, 2021.

(07/043) Lawyer on Trial in Adana…

The first trial of the case against lawyer Özgür Yakut is held at Adana Heavy Penal Court No 11 on July 2, 2021.

The indictment demands sentence for Özgür Yakut on the charge of ‘being an illegal organisation member’.

Özgür Yakut joined the trial from prison via sound and vision system. After defence hearings the court released Özgür Yakut on judicial control conditions and adjourned the trial to October 28, 2021. Özgür Yakut was arrested in Adana on April 23, 2021.

(07/044) The Case on Sürmi İnce’s Death in Hakkari…

The retrial of the case against specialised sergeant Ali Dağkıran, for Sürmi İnce’s (55) death due to gunfire of military members in Yüksekova district of Hakkari, is held at Yüksekova Heavy Penal Court on July 2, 2021. On March 6, 2020, Erzurum Regional Court has reversed the 3 years and 4 months’ sentence given by Yüksekova Heavy Penal Court.

The court sentenced Ali Dağkıran to 3 years 10 months and 20 days on the charge of ‘reckless killing’.

On July 18, 2017, Sürmi İnce died due to gunfire shot by military members, while she was carrying food for her children in Büyükçiftlik town of Yüksekova.

(07/045) Constitutional Court Decision on Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu…

On July 1, 2021, the Constitutional Court concluded on the appeal of HDP’s Kocaeli MP Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, who was sentenced to 2 years and 6 months and was arrested on April 2, 2021. The Constitutional Court decided that Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu’s right to be elected and engage in political activities and right to personal liberty and security was violated by the local court verdict, and the ruling shall be sent to Kocaeli Heavy Penal Court No 2 for immediate release of Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu. It is learned from the news coverage of July 3, 2021 that, the Constitutional Court’s verdict was still not submitted to the local court and Gergerlioğlu’s lawyers, and that he was not released yet. Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu was stripped of MP status on March 17, 2021, following finalisation of 2 years and 6 months of jail sentence on the charge of ‘making propaganda for an illegal organisation’.

It is learned that Etkin News Agency’s website https://www.etha19.com is banned to access on the grounds of “protection of national security and public order’ by Diyarbakır Penal Court of Peace No 5 on July 1, 2021.

It is learned that https://kizilbayrak51.net, https://umutgazetesi29.org websites are banned to access on the grounds of “protection of national security and public order’ by Diyarbakır Penal Court of Peace No 4 on July 1, 2021.

(07/047) Detentions and Arrests in Alleged Link to Coup Attempt…

On July 2, 2021, 20 people are detained in operations covering 34 cities through an Ankara based investigation and 1 person is detained in Izmir.

(07/048) Covid-19 Pandemic…

The Ministry of Health declared that 55 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 461 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on July 2, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 4,891.

The Ministry of Health declared that 45 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 478 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on July 3, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 4,537.

The Ministry of Health declared that 50 people died due to Covid-19 pandemic and 404 new Covid-19 ill patients were diagnosed on July 4, 2021. It is also declared that the daily number of Covid-19 cases is 4,418.

The death toll from Covid-19 in Turkey increased to 49,924 and total number of confirmed ill patients is 5,444,786 as of July 5, 2021.
