(08/024) Operations and Attacks…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 4, 2024, that 1 militant died in a clash between the Turkish Armed Forces units and HPG militants in the Metina area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on June 28, 2024.

(08/025) People Who Died in a Clash in Kastamonu…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 1, 2024, that İsmail Bayram and a police officer named Ahmet Şahan died due to a clash that broke out during an operation to the address of İsmail Bayram, who was reported to be a prison escapee, in Kastamonu. It is also reported in the news that a police officer named Arif Ay was wounded.

(08/026) Torture and Other Ill-Treatment Under Custody in Istanbul…

According to the news coverage of August 3, 2024, 1 person (Ahmet Bostancı) who was detained in Istanbul on the grounds of a social media post, was subjected to verbal harassment by 1 police officer who said ‘Now I have investigated you. You are an enemy of Atatürk and the state’ and was threatened with death by another police officer who said ‘Shut the fuck up, you have already unfurled the flag of Sharia, I will kill you here’.

(08/027) Racist Attack in Kınalıada…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 2, 2024, that Garo Kaprielyan, former chair of Kınalıada Surp Krikor Lusavoriç Church, who lives in Kınalıada, Istanbul, was subjected to racist insults and physical assault of the employees of a supermarket in the area after a quarrel with them, and that Garo Kaprielyan was wounded in various parts of his body as a result of the assault.

Garo Kaprielyan stated the following to the press: “We didn’t have any problems in the previous years, but for the last two years we have been very disturbed by them. I stopped shopping, they spread on the street. They occupied the pavements and in front of the apartment block. They make noise until 12 o’clock at night. The noise of the staff never ends. We had complained before. I took videos and photos of the areas occupied by the supermarket. At that time, an employee of the supermarket tried to attack, but other staff intervened. After that, I was attacked when I was about to enter through the apartment door”.

(08/028) Attack on Food and Cosmetics Chains in Diyarbakır and Mardin…

On August 2, 2024, a group of people held a press statement in front of Ulu Mosque in the Sur district of Diyarbakır to protest the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, and attacked a food chain in the same district with stones and bottles after the press statement was read. It is not known whether anyone was injured or not.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 4, 2024, that after a march in the Midyat district of Mardin for the same reason, a group attacked a restaurant and a cosmetics chain with stones and bottles. Material damage was caused to the restaurant and cosmetics chain and it is not known whether anyone was injured or not.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 2, 2024, that 7 prisoners (Emre Yalçın, Ferhan Mordeniz, Harun Yakaç, İrfan Eminoğlu, Ramazan Işıklı, Talip Yakışır and Uğur Yıldız) in Izmir Menemen Prison were subjected to disciplinary proceedings by the prison administration, on the grounds of rejecting to have their ID cards checked by the prison administration while they were in ventilation.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 2, 2024, that muddy water flows from the taps in Izmir Menemen Prison and that prisoners’ application to the prison administration for a purifier was rejected.

(08/030) Hunger Strike in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 4, 2024, that Grup Yorum member Vedat Doğan, who has been on hunger strike in Kırşehir High-Security Prison since April 3, 2024, demanding transfer and improvement of conditions in R, S and Y Type prisons, lost his ability to swallow and was given B1 pills only once a day, which should be given twice a day.

(08/031) Prevention of Right to Access Health in Prison…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 4, 2024, that Yıldırım Demir, an ill prisoner in Bolu F Type Prison, was not given the medication he needed, and was not referred to internal medicine department although he was referred to the hospital emergency department 3 times due to stomach bleeding he had in 1 week.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 5, 2024, that Delal Tekdemir, former co-chair of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Ağrı Doğubayazıt, who is kept in Istanbul Bakırköy Women’s Prison, suffers from pain due to prosthesis on her knee and cannot access necessary treatment.

It is learned from the news coverage of July 30, 2024, that Burcu Köksal, Mayor of Afyon Municipality, announced at the inauguration of ‘Public Restaurants’ that public restaurants will serve only citizens.

(08/033) Racist and Discriminatory Practice in Denizli…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 5, 2024, that in Denizli Sarayköy Municipality July Assembly Meeting held on 4 July 2024, it was decided to increase the marriage contract fee of 300 TL excluding VAT for Turkish citizens by 100 times to 30 thousand TL excluding VAT for the foreigners and to set the address and numbering certificate fee as 30 thousand TL excluding VAT for the foreigners.

It is also reported in the news that Sarayköy Mayor Mehmet Salih Konya said the following about the practice in question: “The main topic of this agenda is Syrians. Our rules are valid in our hometown, and the guesthood is troublesome after a certain time, and we, the administrators and citizens, are experiencing this problem. I think we are currently in a process that puts our future in trouble. We, as the managers of Sarayköy Municipality, both the ruling and opposition council members, need to take some measures as managers in order to increase the unity and solidarity of our homeland as well as the quality of life in our homeland…We have decided to increase the numbering, address and marriage fees for foreign nationals, if foreign nationals want to marry or live in our district, they have to fulfill these decisions we have taken and if foreign nationals will live in our country after this time, they have to pay this price. In the following process, our municipality will not be of any help to foreign nationals or to facilitate the work of these people”.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 4, 2024, that Izmir Çiğli Municipality employees who protested by chanting ‘We want our jobs back!’ during the 15th Ordinary Congress of Republican People’s Party (CHP) Women’s Branch Presidency held in a congress hall in Ankara, were taken out of the congress hall by private security guards.

(08/035) Association Co-Chair and Other Person Detained in Izmir…

2 people (Dilaver Keklik and Nilay Güleser, co-chair of Aegean Association of Relatives of Prisoners and Convicts (Ege TUHAYDER)) who were detained on July 31, 2024, in Izmir on the allegations of ‘being a member of an illegal organization’ and ‘financing an illegal organization’ were released on judicial control conditions on August 4, 2024, by the criminal peace judgeship.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 5, 2024, that Birsen Orhan, Co-Mayor of Tunceli Municipality, who was investigated for calling for purchasing the book ‘Introduction to Jineology’ which was confiscated from the stand of Aram Publications during the 22nd Munzur Culture and Nature Festival, gave her official statement at the Security Directorate.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 4, 2024, that an investigation was initiated by the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against Dicle University Faculty of Medicine lecturer Prof. Dr. Cenap Ekinci, on the grounds of ‘inciting hatred and hostility among people or insulting them’ through his social media posts against the removal of warning signs in Kurdish ‘Hedî’ (Slowly) and ‘Peşî Peya’ (Pedestrian First) written on some pedestrian crossings by Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality on 29 July 2024, on the instruction of the governorate. It is learned that Prof. Dr. Cenap Ekinci gave his statement at Diyarbakır Provincial Security Directorate within the scope of the investigation.

(08/038) Person Detained in Şırnak…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 2, 2024, that 1 person named Hêvîdar Bilen was detained in the Uludere district of Şırnak, while he was on a condolence visit. The reason for the detention could not be learned.

(08/039) Kurdish Warning Signs Removed from Pedestrian Crossings in Mardin and Şırnak…

It is learned from the news coverage of August 2, 2024, that in the Dargeçit district of Mardin, Kurdish warnings ‘Pêşî Peya’ (Pedestrian First) written by the municipality on pedestrian crossings in different parts of the district were erased by the Regional Directorate of Highways teams accompanied by police officers in armored vehicles, on the grounds of ‘violation of Highways Traffic Marking Standards’ by the decision of Ministry of Interior.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 2, 2024, that ‘Pêşî Peya’ (Pedestrian First) written in Kurdish on a pedestrian crossing on Orhan Doğan Street in the Cizre district of Şırnak was erased.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 2, 2024, that a total of 3 news reports on https://www.birgun.net, https://artigercek.com and https://www.gercekgundem.com, about a former minister and his sons buying 5 flats with a special discount, were banned to access by Istanbul Anadolu Criminal Peace Judgeship No 4 on August 2, 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights, and the content was ordered to be deleted.

It is learned from the news coverage of August 2, 2024, that 1 social media post about Seyhan Avşar’s news report on the Ambassador of Nicosia, and 2 news reports on https://www.evrensel.net and https://www.gercekgundem.com were banned from access by Istanbul Criminal Peace Judgeship No 10 on August 2, 2024, on the grounds of violation of personal rights, and the content was ordered to be deleted.
